Honestly, this is one of the best videos I have watched in a long time. Not only was it informative and shot well, but I find you to be a very pleasant and enchanting human to watch and listen to. Thank you for existing.
As a novice whistle player I love this video! It gives me ‘permission’ to just play around with sounds & techniques and to find my own style - thank you 🙏🏻
Great overview of techniques. I sort of developed half of them over the years without knowing what they were. Like the instrument teaches you how to play it.
Sarah is the best very intelligent and always in her videos a down to earth approach to teaching. Although she has a habit of making the hardest of tasks look and sound simple... #teamrecorder
Great post, I particularly liked the way you zoomed out whilst demonstrating the sliding note. I found that not being able to see what technique you applied really enabled my ability to mimic and apply it. It was actually a very helpful lesson and I am genuinely grateful for the post, ta.
Coming from classical flute to this is an interesting journey because yeah, we trill and have harmonics and can do all sorts of funky stuff, I'd never dream about hitting my flute. They're so fragile with all the springs and screws. There's something so interesting about how many different ways there are to change the effect of the whistle
I've had my whistle for a few years and I stumbled across this video. I'll definately be experimenting with these techniques later! Another fun thing is covering the hole at the top (I apologise, I can't remember the name) and blowing into it so it makes the sound of a heavy wind, you can even partially uncover it to create the effect of wind blowing through the trees.
A roll can also be described as a cut followed by a tap. so generally you would quickly lift up and put down the finger above the note in question and then do the same for a finger immediately below the note in question.
Sarah it looks as if I found your sight a bit on the late side and I am not sure if you get comments (it is now 2021) from your older vids on youtube. Thanks for the various vids on the tin whistle. I am fairly new to this, but I have bookmarked your vids for future reference. BTW my wife's family were Kearns. but they were from the Bronx in NYC. LOL you look very much like our neice Mariane, who is a District Attorney in Manhatten. Hope all is well and pray for my improvement on the whistle as I am terrible so far. LOL
Is it possible to make a vibrato effect by, instead of going two holes up, you vibrate your finger one hole up but only cover 1/4th of it? I got a whistle just a couple of days ago, but, seems like an effect to me. Is anyone doing this? Is it a thing?
As far as penny whistles go all I have is that orinal Clark, way too airy sounding, I have a Thunderbird Low Whistle in D from Kerry Whistles, I think Im gonna get my next smaller whistle from them.
This video is wonderfully informative. I am new to the tin whistle thing. What type of whistle are you playing? It has such a clear sound. Thank you in advance and blessings on you and yours!
I have several high D whistles but they seem weak at the bottom end. But your whistle has a full tone, maybe because it looks like a big bore whistle. What make high D do you recommend??? And do you give private lessons via Skype??? I've played the shakuhachi for many years and still trying to get used to blowing softly with the whistles. Thanks
Are you a CGI or you for real? Because either way, I think you were very animated, demonstrative and instructive on another level than most of can only aspire to dream of achieving.
When you play the roll the taps should be so short that one does not hear them as a note. They are just there to interupt the main note which should be audible three time and of more or less equal length.
No, diatonic. They come in keys that will play one major scale. E.g. a D whistle plays the D major scale, though you can also play in G since it is possible to play a C on a D whistle (or avoid C altogether and e.g. play a pentatonic tune). It is possible though uncommon to half-hole to get other chromatic notes not in the scale, but it's usually more trouble than it's worth
Oh Gosh! such a surprise when I found my "online teacher" Sarah, explaning this video! hahaha xD love her!
Sarah, you have given me wonderful ways to augment my tin whistle playing and thoroughly irritate my wife and family. Thank you very much.
((-,: hahahahaahhah Legend!
my wife got irritated too. So I took up the banjo :-)

Very goof demo and explanation. I'm learning and just ordered a D whistle with slightly larger than average note holes, to help the slides.
Simply love it. Thanks!

I’ve not come across some of these before and they’re so useful! How have I never burbled before?!
6:49 Disclaimer: Don't try this with the whistle held up to your lips
Sarah is always fantastic! Not only in recorder but also in whistle! Wow! What brand is hers in this video?
Thank you so much, Sarah!!)

I think this is the best video of this kind on UA-cam. It's so well explained but...
All the contemporary music is just noise
Thanks Darragh Kearns-Hayes for sharing this. Like (y)

Very helpful! :) Thank you very much :)
Brilliant!

Hey I don't know if you're aware, but Sarah has her own channel called Team Recorder that's still updating weekly! :D
Any recommendations for a starter tin whistle like this?
Its incredible rolls. Up down down up ... Is posible in recorder? 01:00 show on. In music. Skyline pigeon elton jonh. Plis!

Where do you buy the flute from the internet? What's her brand?
Do I spot a Tony Dixon (hand finished) whistle there?
Spartan.F Albion well spotted
I've seen it here : anistratovbagpipes.com/instruments/flutes-and-whistles/metal-whistles/
What is the name of the tin whistle you use? I only have the Original Clarke and the Sweetone D whistle.
It’s a tuneable Chieftain whistle. Sarah has a video on her Team Recorder channel about tin whistles.
As far as penny whistles go all I have is that orinal Clark, way too airy sounding, I have a Thunderbird Low Whistle in D from Kerry Whistles, I think Im gonna get my next smaller whistle from them.
She is definitely high on her cold&flu drugs from 3:40 on

Are you a CGI or you for real? Because either way, I think you were very animated, demonstrative and instructive on another level than most of can only aspire to dream of achieving.
What brand and key is the first whistle?
Im genuinley curious, who is disliking these videos?!
at 4:59 she's playing Eddie V Halen.. :))
amazing . really impressed. ㅋㅋㅋ
한국사람들도 휘슬 좋아해요? ㅋㅋ
are tin whistles effectively chromatic in any way? I have never seen an instrument with such capability. I'm thinking of a concerto.......
Whistles, yes. Whistle, no. Well maybe if you got super good at half holing.
walex wetchina - have you thought about writing for the recorder - has similar multiphonic capabilities and is also fully chromatic
There is something almost comical about slapping the end of a big ass flute like that. Lol
Omg I died laughing 🤣
1:01 Dutch detected! :)
Crazy flutist 😁❤️

Anyone know what kind of whistle those are?
Quodge I believe she plays Chieftain Whistles.
Since everyone else is cussing! This is bad ass!
How to scratch your whistle with your ring...
3:53... whow girl.. easy..
