I suppose all the bright work was still with the car as found. Reproducing the front bumper itself would be virtually impossible. Truly a work of art, excellent restoration. Thanks for posting!
Only a hopeless romantic with deep pockets and/or supreme fabrication skills, determination, resourcefulness, and perseverance would look upon that "before" picture, remain undaunted, and actually bring it back. Just re-producing all those contoured glass panels is a major achievement. Huge respect for Tom and his ilk. And that gorgeous coral and creme livery? MWAH!!!
Yeah I’m thinking a million dollars or close in fabrication of parts and who knows what this guy paid to own it. Pretty amazing to me and personally I prefer this over billionaires spending the same money on spending 10 seconds in space! They can do as they wish but this is something that gets shared with people many people on video and part of our American culture and history. I think you and I are a little romantically inclined to understand what it took!
@@maxwebster7572I learned to drive in my mom's 66 mustang. That car was just a Ford falcon with a nice body on it. That said I would still rather own that than most of today's cars because it's basic an easy to work on then any of today's cars. I currently have a 2015 mustang which I would not trust unreliability as much as that old I have had four other mustangs through the years and 4 Ford pickups from 69 model up to 97model and also a 79 bronco. While they don't drive as good as the newer cars and trucks they are so much easier to work on. I do almost all my maintenance on my older vehicles from replacing transmissions in many engine components to suspension components. The 97 truck involved drop in the whole front differential to change the oil pan gasket but still easier to work on in the newer models. I don't touch my mustang's mechanicals.
the more you put that person in a box and put it far away like that the more you forget that anybody can do this and more with some time, dedication, and skill. its not all brands and buy-another-one-in-better-shape in real life. that's what makes classic cars so special. and just because anybody can doesn't mean everybody wants to so there's always gonna be mechanic jobs with classic cars don't worry. if you want something scary and untouchable with everything inside it being a mystery, just look at today's computerized road blobs they somehow call "cars".
@maxwebster7572 Shut it it is up to tast I as a gen z woudl love allt less tech in cars once I can afford I will be getting a older car with less tech and more analog.
Surely that is one of the most significant concept cars ever, looks like a custom car for the turnpike and a stock car for the track. And so awesome that the gent who restored this Mercury wants everyone to see and hear and marvel over it, curious that many collectors buy cars only to turn them into coffee tables. And the sound of this, wow, somebody in the fabrication shop was a speed mechanic, lol.
My friends Ray and Al Sabo owned this car in early 80s. We did some disassembly and made a mold for the windshield and the upper tailites. They sold it to the guy in California. Delighted to see it done!
WOW ! Can't help but think that my father helped develop this beauty. Even if his only contribution was to buy a 1953 Mercury, new in 53. The stock Turnpike Cruiser is Super. This concept vehicle and outstanding restoration is a top 5 ... 50's car ... Thanks Dennis
I always wanted to see this car in person, my father did get the oportunity and was always talking about it. Beautiful ! We had a Mercury Park Lane and a Commuter wagon in 1957. Tom Maruska always restored masterpieces, such a special Gentleman! Thanks
My father (a B-25 bomber pilot during WWII) bought a brand new 1956 Mercury (with factory air conditioning). I was 13 and thought it was the coolest car on the road. But, when the ‘57s came out I was blown away with the styling. Now I understand how it came to be. Sure brought back memories.
I remember being in Colorado for the Pikes Peak hillclimb in the fall of 1957, I’d just turned 11yo. I saw the 58 Mercury getting ready to go. It had all the chrome covered with masking tape in a not very successful attempt at camouflage. The tail lights and rear fin/cover were just larger and more pronounced versions of the 57. The next day we drove out 55 Chevy to the top, pausing for a couple of vapor-locks!
I ended up w a 58 turnpike in a sale trade for a shoebox i had. Loved the thing, was restored in the 80s so the interior was all red crushed velvet. My mom said it looked like a whore house on wheels... the forward facing antena air scoop things on top of the wondshield made it feel super jesons space age
My Parents had a Big Merc Station Wagon that vintage (1957), Air Conditioned, the biggest V8. We made a trip to LA, California from SE Louisiana. I remember we had to stop at some point on the way back home and buy two new rear tires. We also did Pikes Peak, Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, Meteor Crater, Painted Desert, Mesa Verde, and Dinosaur Mountain in that car on that same trip, It was a dream trip for me at 9 YO.
I met Tom Maruska, the person who restored the XM-100, at the 2007 Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale. He is quite a craftsman! He also restored the Italien, another concept car.
What some people can ACCOMPLISH!!!...Humbling! and Absolutely Astonishing!!!...REVERENTIAL RESPECT! and GRATITUDE! to the RESTORER!!!❤...Thank-you ALL! that contributed to my being able to view!...I am able to enjoy this onl "UA-cam" on my "Cellphone!"...All quite staggering!😳...and delightful!...👍😊!...
A friend of mine who drives for a parcel delivery company made regular stops at Maruska's shop and saw the entire restoration. Had friend of the family purchase a new '57 Turnpike Cruiser. As a six year old, those scoops with antennae at upper corners of the windshield intrigued me. Black with red interior, it was stunning!
Wow! This car is amazing! Good on that guy for having the money to restore this beautiful piece of automotive history! And the interior is out of this world! Exterior isn’t bad either!
What an amazing car! It's truly remarkable that it was able to be restored into this condition. I wish this would have been a production car, I would have loved to own one. Great job on the restoration!
They could've easily put a Lincoln engine in it............but this one was a experiment............the 292 was fine to get it on and off the trailer.............my dad had a 59 Merc Monterey in the very early 60's that he bought from his grandpa.............really sweet that they were able to save this one..............I can only imagine how much they spent.............definitely saved a piece of history
I see a 1957 Ford Fairlane morphing into an Edsel sedan: very iconic styling with sculptured lines that give it a timeless quality. My favorite feature of the car is the exhaust tips emerging from the side body panels. And the color is like something I've never seen, a definite eye-catcher.
Put a big M in the middle of the bumperettes, and you have the 1957 Mercury ... Their motto for the year was "Dream Car Design" and they weren't kidding.
My hats off to the cat that restored this one of a kind auto. Great video the stash has struck again... Stay tooned for another exiting episode of "the stash" Lmao keepemcoming
Cars of this era are so cool. They have personality, style & curves. Today's vehicles are rubber-stamped. All coming down the same assembly line. Switching up a few features. Then giving it a name change.
LOVE THE CURRENT PAINT COLOR! INTERIOR! Curved glass!( yes let’s keep the roof glass down( maybe have a rain sensor that does not fail & Only opens on sunny days getting in 🤔Wonder if those ROCKET LAUNCHERS ARE LOADED UP FRONT?
I can't believe the Ford family hasn't tried to acquire this magnificent automobile for the Henry Ford Museum . I can't think of a more appropriate place for it honestly , it would be seen everyday and that sounds like what the man who restored it wanted. Just love the interior of that vehicle it's the finest craftsmanship and function and just beautiful . I love that car.
Reminds me that here in Barbados there is a 1958 Chrysler Imperial Convertible ,C/D factory hybrid out in a friends yard, he has passed away and the car is left in the yard to drop to pieces, sad really, he loved that old car.
You ought to do an interview with Chuck Ceccarelli at Idaho wrecker sales. Hes got a pretty spectacular car collection as well. I used to work for him in his hot rod shop.
I suppose all the bright work was still with the car as found. Reproducing the front bumper itself would be virtually impossible. Truly a work of art, excellent restoration. Thanks for posting!

I have driven plenty of vintage cars. It is highly over rated.

A national treasure! An amazing restoration story, the guy who did the restoration, a genius!
I think I smiled the entire time I watched this. What an amazing restoration job and how nice this car still exists.
The workmanship on the restoration is magnificent!!
This is more than just a car. It's a stunning work of art.

About a year ago it was for sale in Duluth Minnesota about 100 miles away from where I live
Dennis and his team of friends have knocked another one out of the park............well done video

That thing sure has an outrageous roof line! And to think the glass was hand made - amazing!
The story of the re - creation is one of true determination and congratulations well deserved. great video Dennis and thanks to the current owner.
Nice work, Tom.
Learning to make your own glass for a restoration is next-level work!
That is an absolutely incredible restoration, period.

Gorgeous Mercury. Dennis is so lucky to have driven it. He proudly crossed that off his bucket list I'm sure. Along with Charles Phoenix.
Bless the man who restored this amazing beauty!! He is a master craftsman for sure. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! The roof almost floats above the car, didn’t worry about any roll over tests back then. I owned one the cars in the background when I was young.
Thanks for the show Dennis and Co.!
