    I watched a Todd Graves video on a Saturday night with no real intention of doing it. The next day, me and 7 buddies went to a resort course a few hours away I’d never played. On the range I was horrible with my old swing. I changed my set up to Single Plane for a few swings and hit it dead straight. Switched back and went to the course. It was tight, narrow tree lined fairways with lots of elevation changes. First tee with normal swing, I hit into the woods. Switched to Single Plane for the rest of the round. Not the best place to make a swing change. I shot an 82 and if my green reading would have been better it would have been an amazing round.
    I’ve been working on this for a couple of months, and the greatest thing is it is so much easier on my knees. I had surgery last December and will likely have to have replacements. Until July with the conventional swing, I often didn’t even care about golf after the 14th hole. My knees were hurting and I was considering quitting. A couple of weeks ago, I played 27 holes one day and was still able to walk that night.
    I look forward to hearing about your progress.

      Wow, that is a great story. I'm going to pin this comment so it will stay near the top. I said it in an earlier video; Every golf instructor teaching a method or a swing change or even a tweak or drill always includes the caveat that things will get worse before they get better. Single Plane promises fairly instant results. Sounds like snake oil, but in my experience, and in yours apparently, it's a true statement. The fun part is, as time goes by for me, it continues to get better. Great stuff and thanks for sharing.

      Maaaaannnnn, I went out a few days ago, decided to have a selfish day and didn't film. Shot 76 and had 2 double bogeys. 5 birdies, 11 GIR. I normally average 4 GIR. Played fantastic. Tracked it on Golf Pad, so I'll share that in the next vid, but hated that I didn't film.

    I would say you did pretty well. I can see that consistency is still a work in progress, but its early in the process. I play with a single plane swing. I have been working on it for a few years. Good days and bad days. But i find it much easier to find my swing after time off with this swing. My last round was 6 over. That's having not played a round in two years. Was never close to that with conventional. Bottom line, it works. Keep at it and i think you will love it. Something to note, ball position is very important. One of the reasons for the wide stance is because Moe never change the balls position. He changed the angle of attack, so to speak, by widening or narrowing his stance. Once i stopped moving the ball around it made a world of difference. Todd Graves talks a lot about this. Add it to the mix of knowledge and it may be a help. I love that you're seeking this yourself and not just adhering to a prescribed model. Take the basics and your own tendencies and build a single plane swing that works for you. Just found your channel and will be tuning in a lot more. Hope this works well for you. It changed my game and my view of it for the better.

      You touched on it. The best measure of a swing is.... how bad is your bad? Your good is always good, but if your bad is "less bad"..... that's good, haha.

    Have you seen the video of Moe describing how Manuel de la Torre’s book greatly simplified and improved his swing. He said he got better by following Manuel’s instruction and took a bunch of unnecessary motions out of the swing. No more around the body - keep the club in front taking his hands out of the swing. He was quite old (72) when he made these changes and his swing looked great. He said he couldn’t hit it crooked if he tried. Worth watching the video as it might help with the journey you are on and getting the most out of Moe’s approach to the golf swing. After all he was still trying to improve at 72:)

    Shooting that score with a new swing in a short time is pretty good I think and glad you are sticking with it. I have had a similar experience in about the same time. Practicing almost every day into the net or with birdie balls and it's getting better each session. Have taken it to my local Par 3 course twice and hope to go again today. Been able to hit multiple shots since the course has been empty. Not really taking a full swing since I tend to come out of form still when I do. One thing for sure is when I do make contact, with my irons anyway, my accuracy has improved a lot. I stuck one about a foot from the pin yesterday at 130 yds. So I am sticking with it. Planning to work on it through the winter at an indoor range, hopefully with my R10, at least twice a week. I am committed to it as I can see how it can improve my game without a doubt. Just takes time and you need to be easy on yourself too since it is a huge change. Really enjoying the series and hope you stick with it. I look forward to your videos each week to compare your progress with mine - although you are a much better golfer - well right now anyway. 😉

    Nice score and many of the strikes looked solid. You are still losing your hip depth in many of the swings on the through swing but some did look a fair bit better. I feel that the principal culprit in this issue is the run on and crossover that the clubhead makes in the last couple of feet where your clubhead moves upward and your lead wrist cups quite a bit and club crosses the line. From this position, I think that you are forced to come down somewhat steeply in the first foot or two of the downswing and then you save it with good rotation through the ball but the angle you are coming down from forces you to be closer to the ball to rotate and flatten the shaft for a decent strike. In order to fix this, I think that you will need to exaggerate a countering move and feel. In this case, I would try to feel like the clubhead has fallen down to something like waist or lower back level before you start the downswing. Another good associated feel for this kind of thing is to try and feel like on the way down that you are trying to strike the ground behind your trail foot on the way to the ball. This is kind of what Moe talks about with his trail elbow under move (see this video ua-cam.com/video/9A6Dq5lMMbM/v-deo.html at 8:19 where he almost touches the clubhead to the ground opposite his trail foot to illustrate this motion and 11:08 he talks about trying to hit the toe of his trail foot with the clubhead on the way down). This will force you to keep your distance from the ball on the way through but using something to check that you buttock gets back to at least address depth would also be helpful. It is only through exaggerating certain feels that you will be able to break such ingrained habits. All the best.

    • @GolfTestDummy
      @GolfTestDummy  3 роки тому +1

      I've seen those videos and I remember Moe showing "the master move" also. Moe had to be decoded and translated, because so much of what he said wasn't based on him analyzing his video, it was his personal feel. Because of that, I think his demonstration shows that he himself had similar issues to me, and he also had to exaggerate. I've tried this too, and it's a struggle. I've used exaggeration a lot in the past, and sometimes it works. But when it doesn't, there is an alternative. Rather than trying to consciously make a new or different move, you can also put yourself in a position where you can't make ANY move, and what follows is different and changed because you stop trying to make a move at all. Since this vid, I have found success by focusing on something entirely different. Moe also described and demonstrated a very elaborated lateral motion with lead knee bend and "slide". Todd preaches rotation, and certainly that happens, but when I focus on rotation, it's not good. When I lateral, and sink in to that lead knee, my spine remains tilted, my hands stay back, and my hip depth is maintained. More vids coming. You should see a big difference.

    • @timothypollock8358
      @timothypollock8358 3 роки тому +1

      @@GolfTestDummy Not sure what you mean "where you can't make any move" but I'm intrigued and will be interested to see what you come up with. In copying Moe's swing, I observed this which I think is very important and I literally believe indispensable to his move. His lead arm is coming into his lower torso very rapidly and gets very close to it. By the time his lead arm is almost touching his lower torso his hands are only at the level of the top of his trail hip (VERY LOW). At this point, his backswing is 3/4 - 4/5 over. Just a very slight arm lift and trail elbow cocking and he is already started down. On top of this, his is a very shallow arm motion on the backswing because while he is doing the above, he is also moving his breast bone at least 6 (maybe 8) inches toward the rear of his body (which by itself moves the arms toward the rear). By the time his hands are hip high he has already moved the breast bone most of the distance it moves rearward (about 90%) in the swing. So the lead arm is sucked in rapidly very low and the movement of the breast bone is moving in synch with this arm motion (sort of a flat cocking of the arms and chest toward the rear of his body). This makes sense given the repeatability of this motion since his arm motion is so tied to the motion of his body that not much can go wrong. When I worked on this flat, low, sucking in with the lead arm coupled with the breast bone moving back, something clicked for me and I suddenly felt like I understood the motion much better and felt like the move into the downswing was just a direct consequence of the preceding moves (natural feeling). I just thought these observations might be helpful to you. I'll stay tuned for the next installment.

    • @timothypollock8358
      @timothypollock8358 3 роки тому

      @@GolfTestDummy I would suspect that sliding and lateral motion will be helpful to get your hands and arms down further before turning through which would indicate that they are probably too high and disconnected from the body motion. This would probably allow you to keep your hip depth because arms further behind the turn would allow you to come over the top less and not NEED to get closer to the ball to flatten the shaft (because overrun makes it steep). This would not necessarily help the arm overrun and line crossing but would help counteract the effects. What would fix these things for sure though I believe is the takeway cues that I gave you in the other message. The best summary of this is make the lead arm catch up with the trail shirt seam as fast as possible and with the lead arm as low as possible. Thus hands don't get above the trail shoulder (ever).

    • @GolfTestDummy
      @GolfTestDummy  3 роки тому

      I've tried this a half dozen times now, lol. When I do, it's disaster. It's bad most likely because my body has no idea how it feels to get back to the ball properly, because of years of doing something else. The closest I get to this move and still get a decent strike is when I simply take the right hand and open it immediately into the "holding a tray" position at the top.

    • @timothypollock8358
      @timothypollock8358 3 роки тому +1

      @@GolfTestDummy I totally understand and I think that what we're dealing with here is a need to change your release pattern of your downswing which has been radically different than what you need for this swing. Study 5:41-50 of this video very carefully taking nothing for granted ua-cam.com/video/FWKfOYDV02o/v-deo.html. I want you to notice the following things:
      1) The back turned to the target is leading the club arms unit into the hitting area.
      2) The clubhead has fallen directly behind the line of the two hands (with full cocked and aligned trail wrist) and the line of the club shaft. This alignment does not exist at the top of the backswing. It occurs due to linear pulling on the shaft in the early downswing.
      3)The upper lead arm stays close to the chest during the early part of clubhead delivery and works in concert with the tucked trail elbow to accelerate the shaft.
      4) The trail arm is tucked in elbow first and with side bend being driven across the chest. If you remove side bend (which you can't, this is just for illustration purposes) the elbow would be horizontally moving across the chest.
      5) The trail knee and trail side of the body are being driven in towards the ball and the trail elbow is released with this trail side motion.
      All of the above are indispensable elements of the club delivery pattern of this swing and in fact of any really good swing. It's just that these elements happen at different angles in this swing which is part of what you have to get used to. You've never really consistently had your trail elbow being delivered properly from behind the rotation of your body in your normal swing. So this is learning a new pattern and learning it from a different angle at the same time. I would meticulously do every motion very slowly until final delivery of the club and then release through impact. Repeat slowly until your start to feel the sequencing fall into place. You should start to feel the club fall into the slot and feel a natural acceleration of the shaft on the plane line and an easy squaring of the face. Then you can gradually speed up.

  • @alanduncan9204
    @alanduncan9204 3 роки тому +1

    Yeah - work in progress. Apologies first...I am a real blunt critic but here goes.
    Your stance seem to be a lot narrower than Moe and Todd Graves that restricts the rotation and backswing length. Which, in turn makes you stretch and spring load the left deltoid and trapezius and stops that "floppy" overswing you have. There is a lack of "whip' coming down and through to the ball that you could generate from those muscles coming out of tension. e.g. think Tony Finau ?
    It was a good scrambled score, but it is a 6 out of 10 from me coz it looks single plane at set up then....

The Moe swing has you stand even farther from the ball and makes you keep your feet flat through impact as well as the left knee bent. I tried the Moe swing and went to schools and was told to practice drills for 6 months without going on the course. So no Quick fix there at all. I practiced, and practiced and did not improve. When you see Todd's DTL set-up and look at the line of his feet--he definitely hits a slight OTT/pull to the target. He's deadly accurate with it so its part of the set-up. Worth a try...the Single plane swing has a tendency to let your shoulders point to the right...DeChambeau says he fights this in his swing all the time. If you look at Graves at impact you will see he has an ugly release position which is very early. Looks like a lot of editing on his shots as well. Maybe I am just bitter because of wasting my money on his system which hurt my body. The less restrictive single plane swings work much better for me.

    Looks like your driving was very reliable and if you missed the fairway it was just into the first cut. Sounds like your real issue was greens missed. Do you have analysis on these misses, ie long, short, left, right. Often greens missed simply come down to wrong club selection and it's a great training aid to play a ball you think is right and then club select based on this result and play it again. If you got rid of double bogeys and halved your bogeys then suddenly you are shooting mid to low 70's which for a brand new swing is excellent.

    I have played well with several swing methods learned on YT. I judge a swing more on how playable are the miss hits vs. how many GIRs I get. Since we are not pros, I tend to stick with the swings that keep the ball in play. I also tried a swing method you have previously used. I played some rounds in the 70's, but the bad rounds were horrid. I feel single plane has less things that can go off the rails.

    Stick with Moe , Chad. When we take time off from golf this happens. Moe Norman was a great wedge player as well as his irons. So you should be hitting more greens soon enough. Don’t get locked into trackman. Go to the range and check your ball flight. Change up your targets every two or three swings on the range. Get a mental picture of a hole you play and pretend your playing it at the range. These things help. Good luck well be following you.

    Love the videos! I mean love them!!!! I have dabbled with almost every golf swing you have. I find that because of that I get certain thoughts from one into the other and then it is just a hot mess. The two swing models that I have been between is the Moe Norman and the Darrell Klassen. Complete opposites I know. I would love for you to do a review of Mr. Klassen's swing and give thoughts. Here is a link to his swing thoughts: ua-cam.com/video/FOpW6KkWkq8/v-deo.html . I look forward to more of your Moe Journey and hopefully down the road Mr. Klassen's.

    Sorry, Moe didn't cross at the top having the club point to China and never lost 4-5 inches of tush line at impact so I have no idea what the point of all this is except for the setup. Nothing to do with Moe Norman here.5:17 of the clip clearly illustrates that. Wayne DeFrancesco's video on Moe is more proof. Go to GG and post a lesson with him. You'll get 50 million hits.

      Over the course of the last few years of making content, and occasionally running across negative comments, I've developed a general rule for myself; Just ignore it.
      That said, I also try to remember the spirit of one of the things I hope to achieve, which is to create a community where people help each other and share information. Inevitably, there are going to be people who know a lot about a particular subject, and naturally, some that know very little. I'm responding to this thread of comments for one reason. I hope to salvage it and maybe turn it in to a positive. Maybe that won't happen, but I'll do my best. In the original comment, the overall message was unprovoked negativity. That's fine. It happens. But maybe it was the result of a lack of information, and a few clarifications might help clear things up. First, I've said many times that I'm no expert, and I'm certainly not a golf coach. I hope I've made that clear dozens of times, but anybody watching one video, in which I didn't mention it, could get the idea that I'm trying to be an authority in some aspect. My apologies for that, if that's the case. Second, one of the things I do on this channel is try different swing methods and see what I can learn during the course of that review. Generally speaking, the swing methods I try would be labeled as "unconventional". Moe's swing was certainly that, and I'd say as a whole, comparatively speaking, most golfers have never tried it, let alone given it a good solid effort over a long period of time. Also, seeing as how I'm a flawed golfer, like 99 percent of us out there, inevitably I'll likely continue to have flaws. I just hope to improve them. Crossing the line at the top and losing "tush" line are 2 of my flaws. However, if you watch video 1, and then compare it to later videos, I think an analysis would show improvement, but certainly not perfection. Which is another theme of the channel. I even call myself out in video 1 of this series and freeze frame me crossing the line in a huge way, calling it my 12 plane swing I believe. Ultimately, your comment was harsh and unprovoked. Maybe you're very well versed in the single plane swing, and your swing is perfect, and you have a negative handicap. I can't claim those things. And as far as calling for me to refute your claims and prove you wrong, you're right. I can't. Because I'm trying to make progress, not perfection. But I feel like you're missing the point. It's not about me being a carbon copy of Moe, having a shining example of a single plane swing after 2 months, or even eliminating my faults. It's about trying to improve, learning from others while not losing my determination because of hateful comments, and sharing my real world struggles to get better with others so that they might benefit from seeing someone like them attempt something new. All that said, I can appreciate that you see the faults and also that you probably have a good working knowledge of the single plane swing. With that in mind, do you have any helpful ideas on how I can improve?

    • @GolfTestDummy
      @GolfTestDummy  3 роки тому

      You're not wrong Tom. It's an accurate assessment of what I'm doing wrong. Spine angle, early extension, rerouting, crossing the line, etc. All issues I have. But you're missing a few things. I'm not there yet. I haven't gotten to a single plane yet. I'm trying to get there. I never claim to actually be there. I claim that I'm working to get there. The fact that you can see these things in my swing tells me that you understand what you're looking at, and tells me that you're not only intelligent and observant, but you also understand golf swing analysis. People like that are valuable. And I listen to them and I appreciate their assistance. If we can agree on one thing to start, let's try this one. My swing does not look like Moe's swing. I think we both can say that's true. Now, if we go one step further, let's get on the same page with this one. I can change and get closer to a good single plane swing if I continue to work on the right things. If we can agree on that, then let's put a plan together. I'll try implementing your advice and put in real effort to improve, if you'll accept that I won't change overnight and it will be a process. So, given that we know where my faults lie, spine angle, rerouting, crossing the line, do I work on those things at the same time or one at a time? Which should I start with? Are there drills? Or just some general checkpoints to work on?

    At 5:18 your driver swing is typical for someone who is approximating the SPS. Legs were too bent, not enough forward bend (and likely not enough side tilt although DTL view is hard to see despite the arm/shoulder orientation being somewhat more conventional than SPS). At the top of the backswing you have lost all of your side tilt which makes the club path lead to over the top and flippy release as the hands have to "catch up" to the upper body. The key is to start with the nose "over" the trail knee (vertically directly above it) and to keep it there until after impact. Hard to know but easy to do, once you see it. Look at any Ben Hogan video to see that that is how he hit it as well as almost every pro golfer who does it too.
