Cool units, great cinematography and editing, but man this is some Battle of Winterfell level bad tactics. Castles and fortresses are force multipliers on top of being defensive structures. Why would you ever fight outside the walls, especially with missile units? Yikes…
That is a good question. But, I think it depends on how big the castle or the fortress is. Sometimes they are not big enough to fit all of those troops in a formation they want. Or the size the army is just too big. Also if the walls fail, they are basically surrounded by the their enemy and the walls around them. No way to retreat, It would be a total disaster. As you can see there are some units left in the castle for protection.
PS: I forgot, there are Calvary too, they can’t just move around too much if they are inside the castle. Also, have u seen the winterfell size? It is not that big. Another, do u know how they gathered their men? Obviously, they all did not come from the winterfell itself.
I feel ashamed, you were talking about the battle against white walker right ? I thought u were talking about battle of b***erds. But this reasoning also could work tho, I think.
In the beginning it says gondor was running out of supplies and needed and was running out of choices, I feel like leaving the castle(besides the trebuchets outside( was pretty justified.
But also Gondor calvary engaging with other calvary was a dumb choice. Gondor was obviously losing the infantry battle and should have used the calvary to their advantage, maybe targeting their archers
Tbf Denethor seems like the type of leader that would fight in the open field because he “wouldn’t wanna ruin the white walls”

No infantry no matter how hugely they outnumbered calvary has ever withstood a determined charge of cavalry.
Just a comment on the tactical decision to fight outside the walls. You'd be better at loss management if you made the enemy try to escalade the curtain wall.
Yeah, Minas Tirith held as long as it did before Theoden and Aragorn's arrivals because they defended the walls from the inside.

Best weapon outside of the Nazgul. Why do the Nazgul just fly around like little bats?

The Haradrim moved like the Romans did plus the way the battle was fought somewhat resembles the battle under the walls of Troy (some of you may know what I'm talking about).
So you're saying they fight like the Roman's, but they remind you of the Greek battle for Troy. Okay.

Gondor generally preferred to work alone. They thought they were better than everyone else till the war of the ring

@@jessmith7324 Gondor never thought they were better than everyone, they were just their own faction. Look into the history of the first wars in lotr and it will tell you gondor was suffering but was still strong.

In reality, what's the point of the castle if you aren't going to stay in it when an army approaches, fewer losses on your side and more dead on theirs.
There has been precedence. In the video I thought he said the Gondorian supplies were running low so it was a gambit to force a favorable engagement with some on the walls and some one the ground. Having only a 2 to 1 number advantage sounds sketchy for a frontal assault, so the Haradrim might have otherwise been content to wait on starvation and morale damage to do some more work for them, possibly forcing surrender terms. Given the heavy armor disparity that looked like a foolhardy move on the Haradrim's part and I'm surprised they took the bait. Another reason why an army might post up outside is machismo. Showing the enemy they aren't afraid of them and don't need the walls. At least not yet. Logistics might be another reason to spread the forces around a bit. Only so many men can fight effectively in a confined space. Keeping reserves and spreading out allows for more tactical maneuvering. But in general yes, you are correct. It was a boneheaded move on both parties to engage. Harad had too few siege engines, troops, and armor. In any case it was a fun little for entertainment scenario.

Why did the defenders fight outside the walls? The wall is a multiplier. If there are too many soldiers, rotate them as they get tired in real life. Open a small gate to let attackers funnel in. There would be less casualties.
Haradrim speerthrower that would be the only Answer against the Havy Armored gondorians

Who the hell puts their men outside the wall when you have less troops? You have a huge ass wall to help protect you. Let your trebuchet’s and archers do the work🤦🏻♂️
How do you get them to do animations so often? I have the reworked animations mod but it doesn't do that
I just don't know what I'm looking at. Very inefficient battle, no strategic maneuver, units are just walk and die, not even charging over the catapults. What difficulty are you playing at?

Wish there were some informative subtitles, such as estimated numbers of wounded and dead (broken into force types) that would update. Or the estimated effectiveness of each weapon type. Or the estimated value (lives saved) by various defenses. Presumably, your simulation provides all that data. After a while, the battle gets a bit boring.

If I were the Gondorian strategist and put men outside the walls, I'd make (toward the back) several rows of fake (2D wooden) "men". The enemy would be fooled and all that wood would provide protection when the actual men retreated - much earlier. The enemy would, for awhile, contine to attack the wood men, making them more susceptible to arrows released from the walls. This is a pretty low-tech (do-able), yet effective way of improving the outcome
This is the dumbest thing I've read in a long time.
We have this four wall citadel. Who wants to go outside and give the enemy a cuddle?
