I was born a year after this song came out, and the year "The same old scene" came out, 1980! The way I see it, I might have missed on the whole thing back then, but I did a great job catching up with it!!! lol Eighties people were so romantic and romantically naive, how have we managed to become so cynical in the mean time, I wonder. However, facts are: Roxy music is timeless!
I can still remember hearing this song at C.B.G.B.'S in N.Y.C. and it became an instant classic for me.... Previously at C.B.G.B.'S hearing "DO THE STRAND" by ROXY MUSIC at the first visit to this heavy, serious PUNK ROCK club in the big city on the Juke Box , as a 17 yr. old young man from Long Island .............. What a trip!
It really makes no difference when anybody was born!! I just grateful people out there see the genius he was, would put the now chart toppers to shame!!!!!!!!!! go on roxy
This was the first song I EVER heard as a baby in 1983 (My Dad's doing!).... Since then my love for music over many genres has evolved but this has such a special place in my heart.. Absolute tune and an Absolute Band... much love to this band and my Dad for showing me what great music is !!
Classic track from the great Roxy music !!! Pioneers of disco dance soul new romantic in the 70s 80s recently watched a BBC documentary about this great British group who were a just different with their catchy sexy cool lyrics their shiny suits and playing just feel good happy music !!! Bryan Ferry is just a legend great vocalist founder member of this glam band this is a great remix long version !!! They dominated the charts in the glorious 80s era this reminds me of being a teenager good times !!!
I discovered Roxy Music & the brilliant Bryan Ferry in early 80's when Avalon came out. I was very young but became hooked forever! I am LOVING this version here! And aside from all the obvious classics, I really have a soft spot for Street Life! Thx a million for posting this!
… I own the Twelve of this and YES ! it was originally ONLY released as a Canadian 12" …. Not only was I a MASSIVE Roxy fan (since 1972) but I was also a Massive Bob Clearmountain Fan …. I bought this 12" on import as I was a DJ specialising in Roxy/Bowie and Futurist music in Liverppol at the time … I am SOOOO Pleased and Proud that ALL these years later, technology has made it possible to share with SO many people … and THOSE people ACTUALLY ! appreciate it and 'GET' the genius of Both Roxy Music AND Bob Clearmountain … great post … Thank you x
Steve Proctor Interesting that Mr. Clearmountain's 12" Version of the Stones' "Start Me Up" two years later was only the 7" and album track - not extended at all. Great cover art, though - the deer hoof/high heel stiletto - VERY cool.
discovered this song right around the time an old school friend's younger sister got killed in a car accident and I was really devastated and shocked over her death and the people who we were friends with that have comforted me during such a tragic time of my life and I am truly grateful to have these people there for me.
I still have this on 12" vinyl somewhere. IMO this is one of the best extended remixes of the 80s. Not overprocessed or filled with cheesy vocal effects - just the perfect mix of the original with some tasteful extended percussion segments. Wonderful. IIRC it was remixed by Tony Visconti. Anyone know for sure?
@heucatia: Agree; 1979 was a VERY challenging year for me and this song sums it up. BUT in April 1980 my 2nd daughter was born......a lady of immense gifts, who has been a miracle in my life, along with her miracle sister, born November, 1977.....an MD since 2005...........Roxy and Bryan keep memories alive.
This is pretty much a Clearmountain creation - "Clearmountain made an impact straight away with his remix of 'Dance Away': "They said they wanted an R&B type of thing, but I remember at the time the drums weren't doing the right thing. The bass drum wasn't consistent enough, so I actually brought in a New York drummer to just play bass drum, and we added some percussion. Then the song wasn't structured right. It was verse, chorus, verse, middle eight. [Legendary Atlantic boss] Ahmet Ertegun came over and he said 'Where's the second chorus? You've got to have another chorus in there.' I didn't know Roxy Music, I'd never met any of them, and I was thinking 'How can you mess with their song?' But we put the second chorus in and they loved it."
Thanks so much for this enlightening info. I have followed Roxy since 1972 and had never heard this, not having bought the Thrill Of It All or the Canadian 12''
@@mikeg1378 Hmmm...I can't hear any resemblance at all between that break and this one from 4:36 - 5:36 ua-cam.com/video/43cyeijm7_U/v-deo.html Let the listeners decide for themselves.
I'm in Lisbon now, (I'm portuguese), and in a couple of weeks I'll be back in London. You're right, British music in general is definitely edgier and raw sounding! It just sounds more real and down to earth. I mean, the Americans have good stuff too, on a more polished and brushed register, but they do. Personally, however, as a European I really can relate more to what the Brits do! I guess I like the rawness of how the old continent still sounds... still that is! lol
I think all great Bryan Ferry songs should only be played in extended or full version. You just can’t rush his timeless lovemaking music. He was never meant for “radio edit.”
@heucatia 1980 is my birthyear 2, so I didn't grow up with Bryan Ferry but it didn't take me to long to get to know him in my teenage years. Roxy music and A-ha are my favourite bands of all time.
Haha back in 79 when Roxy would come on TV my father would shout - Hey Stevie your mate teeth is on tv ? - My Father called him teeth because :- On the theTotp video - When Bryan stopped singing he would look into the camera & do his now famous Bryan Ferry forced Smile ? -He would look into the camera showing all those white teeth - And of course it just so happened the castonettes rattled every time Bryan did this ? My Dad said is it his teeth that are rattling ? So thats how Bryan got to be called teeth in our home ! - Up until Dad dying he would always say Stevie Teeths on ? Love this song I really do ! - 1979 -The world was a better place alround
This song has so much meaning to me. In the summer of 1979 Disco was large and in force, I was a young man back then. I met this cute red headed girl who I fell head over heels for. The Lyric…”I said it’s love, she said alright” ….comes to mind. We dated for about a month and the romance was such a whirlwind. One Saturday night I went to the local Disco with friends …..and there she was ….. “Hand and hand with another guy.” ….She was dressed to kill and inside I was dying!” That made an indelible impact on my life for that summer but as we have all had our hearts broken, I moved on. Now 41 years later and being 58, It seems like another time ago. I don’t mean to be conceded but I have aged very well and am very successful. I ran into her a couple years ago…she has not aged well and is not very happy with her life…. She regrets the decision she made back then. I told her we have to take the….. good with the bad…the right from the wrong ….and appreciate the great things we have in life. It was Bitter Sweet to see her again.
I 'm 58 and have a similar story , thanks for sharing yours. I 'm not a big Elton John fan but, I think I will treat myself to a blast of " I'm Still Standing "
Glad the album version trimmed some of that drum machine intro that the drummer wasn't locking in with - the two distinct kick drums were off from each other.
The very best song that he ever recorded was a remake of the Byrds Eight Miles High If you haven't listened to the song in a long time try and find it and put on some head phones and give it a listen. I promise you will not be disappointed. Greetings from Atlantic City New Jersey U.S.A
This and I danced away MANY heartaches......believe me.....but they all came full-circle!!....with my 2+ miracles!!

you live it twice
Exactly!!! Thank you for your wonderful words.❤
@@greeneyes8313...it’s a PRiViLEGE to have the ability to FEEL !🥳
I get you. But this track was from 1979...so not totally 80's; but it has the spirit and romance of the New Romantic 80's.

Priceless. And better to dance- then to drink away.
They had their own sound, one of my favorites.
"loneliness is a crowded room; empty hearts; turned to stone: all together all alone" all of Sartre in one sentence
So stone cold sober is a flyby?
Full of open hearts
Glasklarer sound!!!!

Very disco-like in parts, especially the break from 3:15 - 4:45. LOVE IT!
Sorry not disco. Not sure why you think a classic instrumental which includes epic bongos among the unique keyboards is at all disco. Just no.

Thx for rippin it from CD4 a few minor imperfections but this extended version makes up for it

Fantastic. I just rocked out to your version. I think this version, plus the one on "Live at the Appollo" are the best.
so cool !!

Roxy Music - one of the BEST Band´s ever !!!!

my husband's favourite!
what a song......What a song.....
It was certainly an elusive track . Back in the 1990’s I had to buy the Canadian 12” single for Phil Manzanera as he’d never knew it existed .
Excellent
