Getting emotional listening to this gem and reading the comments. 59 years old next month and at times struggle to accept getting old. However, the great music and memories of my younger days make it okay. We were truly gifted with the best music of a generation in the 80s.
I get ya but with getting old we would never see how special it was. We must accept the good with bad. The balance of all things with one or the other then nothing would be what is. Life is too short to worry,,,Enjoy the now. The moment. Because they soon pass.
"It's funny how, I could never cry until that night that you passed by, hand In hand with another guy, you're dressed to kill and guess who's dying" 👌🏽👏🏽
The first verse alone is a fabulous little vignette of unrequited love. 'I said it's love, you said "alright" ' , sets it up and 'your're dressed to kill, and guess who's dying ?' delivers the perfect punchline. Amazing lyric. We've all been there !
The guy is full of amazing lyrics. A class of his own, never matched and will be difficult to be matched for a long time. Great lyrics, but Ladytron, In every dreamhome and Mother of PEarl are to my mind in another class alltogether. Ferry knows so well how to play this classy creep, a somewhat disturbed millionair or a hopeless romantic and puts all that in the words so they match all that. Just fantastic. He is a bit like Maradona on the pitch: his topclass work did not last as long as some others (Messi in the case of Maradona and Bowie in the case of FErry). But at his peak no one came anywhere close to his achievements.
I'm 15, this was on my recommended on UA-cam (I listen to a lot of oldies). I remembered my dad putting on a tape with this song it to help me go to sleep, when I was 7/8, there were so many good Roxy Music songs on it that I liked, like 'Like a Hurricane' that I'd stay up to listen to them! Great to hear it after so long :)
You have good taste ... sorry for your loss but I hope happy memories. I use to dance to this and it made me think of a past love, the words being very appropriate to me.
Roxy just amazing , just genius just so far away from anyone else , a style untouchable by anyone else but the biggest influence on so many great bands that came after them , a dark disco in 1979 I was 18 and when Dance Away played it was amazing
I was watching a show on Catalina Island with the bay of Avalon, which I remembered I loved this song but I loved so many songs during my days of drugs sex & disco..so hear I am listening to Roxy Music album..69 yrs old wow how time flies the older you get..will these great songs be done again in the future?
Another gem from a band that produced so many. This is a song you just have to dance to, hence the title "Dance Away." Roxy Music have a well-deserved place in the pantheon of Rock Music. So many unforgettable, immortal songs. Well done Bryan, Phil, and the boys.
This is a special song for me , brings back memories. 2024 and it still Rocks even after all these years. Who ever is watching this i salute you All for having supreme taste in music , Stay safe and well and All the Best with what's happening in the world now ,from the 🇬🇧
I love this song for so many reasons. Firstly it’s incredibly poetic and the words resonate. Secondly, I love how for a 1979 song it sounds so 80s but still iconically 70s. Bryan Ferry is a legend! ♥️
This song came out when I was 16 in April 1979, the same month that Dance the Night Away by Van Halen came out. I've absolutely loved both songs ever since. I'm not much of a dancer, but I love great songs... and irony.

One of those songs and bands I grew up with but never appreciated till decades later. But sometimes you need maturity and experience for the lyrics and mood to hit home. It has.
So true, same here, apart from hearing Same old scene in 81,I just went oooff! Then years later really got into them, once I'd stopped chasing girls, and sometimes catching them.
Also a band i think were responsible for 'the' greatest cover version of all time,'Jealous guy'. Usually covering another artist's song would come with some trepidation and pressure, but to make the song your own and blow the original out the weeds was just amazing!
As the college disco wound down, the DJ would play "Total Control" by the Motels and "I Can't Tell You Why" by the Eagles, and those of us who hadn't made a connection got to watch couples slow dancing. Then to really twist the knife, he would play this song!
Bryan will always be a fucking legend. Saw him in concert a few days ago, he still puts a magnificent show out there. His voice isn't that good anymore, but hey he is 72. Was glad I was able to still see him. He didn't play this song though, but his classics (like these) will forever stay in my spotify playlist. Thanks Bryan.
Yesterday - well it seemed so cool When I walked you home, kissed goodnight I said "it's love" you said "all right" It's funny how I could never cry Until tonight and you pass by Hand in hand with another guy You're dressed to kill and guess who's dying' Dance away the heartache Dance away the tears - Dance away Loneliness is a crowded room Full of open hearts turned to stone All together all alone All at once my whole world had changed Now I'm in the dark, off the wall Let the strobe light up them all I close my eyes and dance till dawn - Dance away Now I know I must walk the line Until I find an open door There was I - many times a fool I hope and pray, but not too much Out of reach is out of touch All the way is far enough - Dance away
Pure poetry and fantastic music. Loved it in 1979 and love it even more now. And 'loneliness is a crowded room' is a line I often think of on nights out ;)
Ferry is so cool. Who else could pull off a vibratto like he does and not sound ridiculous? In R&R, no-one dares doing a vibratto, simply because it doesn't go with the genre, but Ferry has always done it with panache and authority, in fact it is, in a sense, his trademark. What a suave dude.
The 007 of music. Wow buddy, I couldn’t of put it any better and have been searching for that line for my entire life since Avalon in 83. Well done sir.
This song is about when dating was fashionable an slow songs wer played in discos bring bk the 80s , today's generation will never have the pleasure of knowing such a era
Dance away the heartache, dance away the tears done that many of times.. Anyone out there your not alone, you will get through it, so keep smiling and be happy 😊 Absolutely 💯 amazing!!
I was brought up with Roxy Music playing in my home and I always thought they were telling me their lives, like an extract from their diary. It was so unique & not repetitive. I even love their version of Jealous Guy better than the John Lennon version.
What I wouldn't give to go back in time and dance away (couldn't resist 😄) the night at a disco in one of my fabulous disco outfits .... Love this song ... 3.5 mins of pure nostalgia. Thanks for posting. Nfabulous song xxx
Can anybody explain musically what that little flourish Ferry is doing when he phrases the word ‘cry’ 0:37? He does it a lot and it’s just magical…Brilliant singer
This was the transition from old Roxy music to new. The emphasis lyrically is now on rhyme and syntax, rather than story. The instrumental takes supremacy.

Love you xx
Tim Jordan - thanks!!! I’m a 100% with you! Here’s my 5 cents: I was lucky enough to see Brian Ferry at a very small live concert in Germany, I’d say less than 1,000 people, with giant earthen owls eminating a scented smoke that, by it’s sweet odor, reminded me of something we used to “fly away” from our daily worries... It was a magic concert... stage catwalking straight into the crowd, Brian close enough to touch him, vibrating with a magical charisma that one would be unable to find these days in any of the so-called “stars”... That concert was pure magic, and I thank the lord on my knees that I was at the right place at the right time back then. My one man web design company that propelled me from the bottom to the top here in Thailand innthe late 90s was called Avalon, that should say it all. I love Roxy Music and Brian Ferry to bits. It was a magic time (80s and 90s)... A time that one can only dream of nowadays, where a socialist elite tries to strangle us all to death. My strength to overcome all this is the music of the 80s and 90s. Love to all you Roxy Music fans out there. ❤️☀️🇹🇭🏖🌴🥥🐘🌈

Another brilliant track from everyone's favourite lounge lizard.
Again another video I've never seen after following Roxy for over 40 years‼ Fantastic‼
Best line in any song ever. “You’re dressed to kill, and guess who is dying”.
There's a lot of guessing: "Dim the lights, you can guess the rest."
Who’s listening to this fantastic song in 2024. I bought this record in 1979 where’s the time gone . This song doesn’t age classic 🇮🇪

Your comment made the song much more relatable to me! Unrequited love is such a life-degrader.
It’s the line that makes the song. Love it.

great mellow music - even today
Roxy Music - Dance Away
Yesterday - well it seemed so cool
When I walked you home, kissed goodnight
I said "it's love" you said "all right"
It's funny how I could never cry
Until tonight and you pass by
Hand in hand with another guy
You're dressed to kill and guess who's dying'
Dance away the heartache
Dance away the tears
- Dance away
Loneliness is a crowded room
Full of open hearts turned to stone
All together all alone
All at once my whole world had changed
Now I'm in the dark, off the wall
Let the strobe light up them all
I close my eyes and dance till dawn
- Dance away
Now I know I must walk the line
Until I find an open door
There was I - many times a fool
I hope and pray, but not too much
Out of reach is out of touch
All the way is far enough
- Dance away
After "until I find an open door" must be a line...help please.
