Great advice. I'm the art director on a ARG project who's client is a major festival that will likely be cancelled. You better believe we are trying to assemble a pivot strategy ASAP! Hang in there, everyone.
Thankfully this is something that won't last forever, won't kill everyone, and the vast majority of people will be fine. I'm so glad I'm back in school and thankfully my summer internship hasn't been affected. I realized that I need to get into a profession that won't be as hit by a recession. I can't imagine what it's like for restaurant workers and those in the fitness industry. I'd be shitting myself if I was in their position. I also had a professor suggest that we work on our resume during this downtime and that he'll critique it for us if we want. But I also agree that it's a good time to improve on a skill or go back to school. The silver lining to this type of situation is that it gives us time to reflect on ourselves and figure out what we want to do for a career (if you're not in one already).
I agree. I'm a delivery driver myself for multiple gig app platforms and Grubhub is one of them. Even for me, I'm just really hoping I can stay in business for as long as I can. Sure, the media keeps telling us to stay at home but they're not putting food on my table. And I haven't been to the gym in a few days but every time I've driven by lately it's been quite empty.
Thank you for this video your advice is great and interesting that I found your second channel today haha We are of a similar age and I enjoy your perspective. I've been lucky to be in a decent place with supportive parents through all 3 of these past recessions. I graduated HS in 2000, did one year of college at home then moved 500 miles away to a big city to try to live on my own and go to college. Before I'd even gotten a job and less than two weeks after I moved, 9/11 happened. Real kick in the teeth and I ended up having to go to college for another whole year just to clean up my grades. Never changed my major to a creative one because I was too scared after that experience, and I still don't use the major I did graduate with outside of I have a college degree instead of not having one. I just quit my job and I'll be starting my freelance career next week. I'm seeing this recession as a reset button so I can be ready for the next big thing.
Second channel stoked! We were overdue for another one. Being in the construction family business I have felt the cycles for sure. Also shoutout to being a UA-cam premium subscriber bringing in that extra ad revenue. 😎 Good stuff here! Thanks for sharing Finn!
Thank you, Finn! I have been watching your channel for a while and I'm amazed by how your perspective in Heavier Music, Business and marketing blow my mind I'm from Singapore and even though we have not gone fully locked down, I'm already preparing for it. I work in Retail and knowing I'm gonna lose my job. I'm not afraid as I'm already taking an Online study at Udemy in Digital Marketing. Such a timely video to prepare if we are fully lockdown, Once again Thank you, Finn, for the Advice
I was hit hard during the 2008 recession. My wife at the time left work due to an MS diagnosis and I was laid off from my job a few months later. I did go back to school, culinary school to be exact, but did end up getting called back to my old job making decent money...after we were divorced, but once good things started happening for me they snowballed and I learned that yes, it doesn’t last forever. Thankfully what’s going on right now hasn’t affected me much financially since I have an essential job, but I have plenty of friends that have been hit real hard, and I feel for them.
I tried to spark a similar conversation on another social media platform, and it quickly turned into shrieks & howls!? Too many people have had it too good, for far too long. I posited that, 'now is a good time to chill out, and reflect on life decisions'.. apparently it was a bit too much for anyone to comprehend, let alone admit their potential shortcomings. I'm on the same page as you, 'prepare yourself for what lies ahead'. It's a survival tactic, and I've learned (through many years of my own trials & tribulation) that most people don't know how to look/ plan ahead. Anyhoo, I certainly appreciate your thoughts & insights. Keep spreading the word, and I know it will help someone out there!
Awesome video Finn! This is probably more relevant to your other channel, but I think it's worth mentioning that there is no guarantee of the government having your back or that of those around you. Lots of people are potentially be doing it tough, and there is nothing more punk-rock than checking in on your friends who you think might be struggling, doing what you can to help more vulnerable members of the community (especially with this current virus situation) and really applying that DIY ethic to build something out of a shitty situation that can allow you and your community to come out of it stronger in the end.
I was supposed to commence a digital marketing career tomorrow with a new job, but the agency had 2 big customers pull due to coronavirus and now I'm back to square one Beyond devastated and trying to figure out where to turn, but your video couldn't have come at a better time. Thank you so much for the actionable and positive content, it's more valuable to a lot of viewers than you probably know
In the 90s, the standard dude who worked at Kinko's was a senior in high school who had his own apartment, drove a tuned Eagle Talon and had a college age girlfriend. Weird dynamic...
The point you made a the 2 minute mark is exactly where I’m at: I just got a promotion at my job that I’ve been working my tail off to get (production assistant at a 2000 cap venue), only to have the entire live entertainment industry go on pause. If you can bounce back, so can I. Thanks for this video
In the UK we normally look at every 8 years for example. Before Covid hit we were definitely were due one I would say. Also not sure in the states if you have it but over here they are paying 80% of peoples wages from the Government funds for people who are unable to work and businesses if they qualify get a 10,000 pound grant. Everything you say is absolutely correct!
This might be something that not everyone wants to do, but people should always consider driving for multiple gig economy apps especially during times like these so you have something to fall back on. Doesn't even have to be food related or picking up passengers either and remember to download different apps that will save you money on gas, receipts, etc. It all adds up in the end.
Hey Finn. I just wanted to say I appreciate you so much. I know you’ve probably had to correct me at times on social media and in the comments, and as someone who’s younger I probably need to keep learning more and from different angles I have yet to experience. With this video, I really want to thank you for the insight. I just graduated, and I was already having a hard time the weeks leading up to the pandemic. I especially loved how you said that now is the time to learn new skills and consider going back to school. This week I started building a portfolio website, and I’m going to look into getting a grad degree now, especially since I don’t particularly like or respect the bachelors I currently have. I keep getting pressure, mainly from my family, to just work at like Home Depot or something, but I felt like I might not have the time to really focus on a masters or law degree (I’m a bit of a slow reader and writer so I know I won’t be able to crank out a thesis in only a few hours). Im certainly going to keep trying to get content marketing and digital marketing jobs, but I think you might be right that this is a good opportunity to re-educate myself. Thank you for the advice, and I can’t wait to see what you put out next.
If you could make a video with graphics about the other pandemics that have happened in the world and kinda show how long they took and how affected the economy like the videos you make in your other channel
Wow, watching this video now... Did exactly everything you recommend since the pandemic started 😀 (Plus Bitcoin, which also turned out as a great idea 😁)
Definitely spending this time to work on skills (working on a few personal projects regarding data analytics) but at the same time, I feel like I’m screwed. I was supposed to graduate from college soon and now I have no idea when I’m going to graduate. It’s nerve wracking.
5:40 hopefully you already got guns and ammo because those (especially ammo) are being raided down to trash quality ammo and obscure calibers if not being price gouged to hell. lol. but let's be real, there's no need to get to that level.
I didn't know this was your story with tech. Do you think you would have went into content creation if you got into tech? Also, bootcamps are killing it now.
Well I'm currently at college (started in September) so that's good. Do need to try and improve my skillset though. I'm a jack of all trades master of none type person. Definitely thinking of buying some stock though
Finn I'm having trouble budgeting during the pandemic and was wondering if you could help me? Things are pretty dire and I may be evicted if things continue. My monthly outgoings are as follows: Rent: 700 Food: 300 Bills: 220 Rare Black Metal LPs: 1100 Gas: 150 Is there anything I could maybe shift around or cut back on?
I. build that skill
II. consider going back to school
III. invest
IV. don't spend money on dumb shit
CONSIDER going back to school :)
When the advice coming from my mom AND Finn are the same, I take it as gospel.
Jan 2021*: I sold my kids and wife to the stock market, now they are gone. I’m suing you.
Great advice.
I'm the art director on a ARG project who's client is a major festival that will likely be cancelled. You better believe we are trying to assemble a pivot strategy ASAP!
Hang in there, everyone.
Best advice I have hear since the 2010: you can't keep all the eggs in a single basket; descentralization its a good strategy.
All solid advice man. There's a lot of people that definitely need to hear this. It does get better.
These are the exact same things I was thinking, glad to know I’m not alone.
Thankfully this is something that won't last forever, won't kill everyone, and the vast majority of people will be fine.

You are my ultimate favorite guy on UA-cam. Thank you for the advice.
Thanks man!
Really enjoying this channel as much as The Punk Rock MBA. Keep going, Finn! 💪
Thank you!
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA Most definitely welcome!
Another reason you're the damn best. Great insight my friend!
Thank you for the straightforward, practical advice
