- Extreme Trains January 2018 at the Colorado Model Railroad Museum starring The Southern Pacific Oil Cans by Brent and Brian Milota. Other trains featured are:

I intended to put a complete description of the auto rack train in the video, but forgot and messed that up. Here are some of the stats on auto rack train. It has 16,700 prototype horsepower, is 4000 scale feet long, and weighs 1484 prototype tons. The locomotives are Athearn Genesis and Intermountain. The cars are from Walthers.
"The Oil Cans" was a tanker train that carried oil from Shell Oil Company’s Belridge field over the Tehachapi Mountains and across the LA Basin to its refinery at Carson near Long Beach. An interesting and informative article about this train can be found at

Best layout ever built. Finest operation I've ever seen, and i Have belonged to 6 different model railroad clubs....and southern pacific is the road i model.
A tremendous amount of real engineering went into the design and fabrication to attain a flawless operation. People who did this are experts.

I was most impressed by how well all of the locomotives and rolling stock tracked, I saw no rocking or uneven travel just tremendous attention to detail.

Absolutely amazing. The attention to every last detail is incredible. Colorado Model Railroad Museum, you have done yourself proud. This is magnificent.
I cant get over this video. CMRM is run like a professional railway. The smoothness of operations is so prototypical. I have seen some wonderful layouts, but, when their trains run, there's wobbling of cars and stuttering of the trains due to electrical problems and kills the show there and then, giving it a toy-like feel. Not so on this layout. Running humungous, even monster trains just like the real thing, takes my breath away.
in this particular video, I just love to see the auto-racks overtaking the oil cans and then the oil cans moving on. Prototypical! Even the trona hopper train in the opposing direction is a hit.
You guys are my own No.1. Beauty and difficult technicals, running all taken care of: first class. Impeccable.
Allagash comes a very close second. Based on what Ive seen of course. There must be many more geniuses that I haven't seen and my respects to them.

Thatta Boy Bill!! You've displayed (what was) the greatest train in the west! My all time favorite. Been to California 2 or 3 times to see it going over Tehachapi. Last time I was there I didn't even know it was ending very soon after. Caught loads out and empties returning throughout the same day. Once, I followed it upgrade from Caliente, through Woodford and on up to the loop. When at the loop, it had to take the siding (Walong). When the train slowly came to a stop I was trackside taking it all in on film. The engineer saw me and tossed something out the window. Moments later a very long Santa Fe freight came downhill. It was unbelievable! It had 9 engines on the point, a couple were even the F-45's. Moments later the train even revealed a set of mid train helpers. Well, after the Santa Fe freight was clear, the Tank Train quickly throttled up and headed out of the siding. After the rear cans cleared the switch, I walked over to where the engineer threw that item out the window. All I could see is that it was something white and wrapped in plastic. I picked it up and saw it was a "crew pack" it said on the label, with the scarlet red and yellow SP setting sun emblem on it. Guess the engineer was giving me a little souvegnier for chasing him all the way from Caliente! I still have it today. Of course! Got another interesting story about the "Athearn TANK TRAIN" car too!

No, never did. At least not at this point. It was shot on VHS back in 1998, if i remember correctly. Not 100% sure how to accomplish that right now. But it's a great idea! I've seen other video of similar encounters on You Tube but actually think mine might be better. It was very fast paced and non stop action. At this point I haven't posted anything on the tube.
Something u can never out grow, wonderful video.

Wow! Nice to see the Southern Pacific back in action! Pride of workmanship is superb all over this layout. Reminded me of my father and I chasing SP and Santa Fe out of Bakersfield and over to the Tehachapi Loop. We'd get lunch in Tehachapi and follow the trains back to Bakersfield. What a gorgeous layout. The detail is so fascinating. The rocks are very true to life as is the water... and it's all just so enjoyable to see. And those trains! Very much fun was had by hubby and me this evening while we watched the trains make their way around this scene. My compliments to the team who put it together.

The seamer an the Amount of work that went into this build must have been hours an hours of hard graft. Truly out standing work.
One of the things that I miss in your fantastically beautiful recordings of model trains is a train that transports trees or wood. If there was such a gig train there would be fantastic.

Brilliant camera angle of shot..witg onboard view n graphic view at the same time as train travelling.
I love the soft curves in the American layouts where they are in sight,
in the EU layouts it seems they can not get rid of the start set angles.

That train is quite an impressive display! It would look right at home on the La Mesa Model Railroad Club's Tehachapi prototype layout.
We run the oil cans on the La Mesa Club's layout occasionally. At least one of our members owns a set of oil cans, and visiting modelers come by once in a while. Keeping a train that size in operating mechanical condition is a big job!

This was from back in the day when the SP was so prosperous, that they could afford to hire people who washed all the rolling stock every night. ;-)

Great railroad I need to visit the museum it's been a long time from my last visit.
Loved the flat cars with Kenworth road tractors .....must have been for Monfort out of Greely Colorado that was their colors...nicknamed the circus wagons lol

Outstanding model railroad. I also compliment the videography: one of the reasons I watch is to figure out "How did Bill get that shot?" Reading the comments there is a dolly. I knew it had to be that or an amazing drone that was quiet and not kicking up the air, dust and scenery.
Thanks Ted. We have talked about using a drone, but the consensus is that we don't want to risk crashing and damaging the scenery or structures.

In Germany we never had such a behemothes. Neither on the tracks nor in model scale. So I even more enjoyed to watch your finely filmed video! The landscape is breath-taking.
