Blade of Darkness is such a gem of a game, forgotten for so many years but finally getting some recognition again after the steam re-release a few years back. Really wish it had sold better at the time so that we could have gotten more stuff from the devs. As it was this was their only game, but at least it was a memorable one!
Blade of Darkness was probably my favorite out of all these. I only learned to appreciate Fallout Tactics later when Fallout 3 and 4 felt like they missed that something that the old isometric games had.
@@janneaalto3956 Yep, to this day I'm chasing the fun I had with it when playing it first. And second, and third, and fourth... Wait a minute! I'm sensing a pattern here. xD
Well, the next video that’s coming will be Games That Should Never Be Ep7, and it will be full of really bad games. You know, to counter all the good ones and sustain the balance in the universe. ;)
Max Payne was pretty spectacular in it’s day & gameplay has aged pretty well. There are game mods to modernise the graphics (as much as possible) that work pretty well too. This is going to sound like sacrilege from someone who played soooooo much Worms 1 with a friend of mine that it wasn’t fun for our friends to play against us but the Worms sequels, all of them, are kind of redundant. They look nicer, you get more weapons etc. but the original gives you just as much multiplayer fun. AVP 2 has nothing to do with the movies, which is good frankly. The game is so much better than those movies with some original environments & challenges, why no films really came out of the games I will never understand? You know I can’t remember if I’ve played Blade of Darkness? Sounds like a blast though? Anachronox is new to me? That’s an interesting description though & I like what you’ve shown, I’ll have to give it a go. Schizm is a love letter to Myst that is also entirely it’s own thing & I highly recommend it! You summed up Fallout Tactics perfectly, “it’s not the Fallout game I wanted.” I’m not going to knock it for not being my thing but it’s the only Fallout I haven’t put any real time in to. Gothic is well worth a play. It owes a lot to Elder Scrolls but is it’s own game but (& I do know this is me being all high-functioning autistic) the way your character handles his sword pisses me off in a big way! He looks like a kid with a toy sword he doesn’t know how to handle. I know, I know but it bugs me OK?! 😄 That’s a great list! You’ve done a good job of showcasing both classics & some great lesser known games, thanks.
I agree about worms, and I'm sure I've said it - whichever the worms you have, it's a great game to have fun with friends. :) Anachronox is an easy title to overlook as it sounds, at least to me, like a top-down vertically scrolling shoot'em up. Don't know why, but the title always kinda felt like it to me. :) Oh, no, you're correct. The animations in Gothic were dog$hit, but it more than made up for it with story. :)
One of the cool things about Gothic, if I remember correctly that is, is that as you point learning points into swordfighting you not only do more damage but your sword animations get better aswell. Or perhaps that wasn't added until Gothic 2...
Thank you too! :) There’s always “someone” that will find something to dislike. Me not being a native English speaker, not mentioning something in particular about one game or another, or even not liking something that they do. It’s inevitable, it’s the internet. At some point I’ve decided to ignore comments that are negative for the sake of being negative. I don’t mind constructive criticism. And dislike without a comment to support it, is just that, a voiceless comment that says “it’s bad cause it is”. :)
Absolutely, the internet is a good mirror of the general public: the masses themselves (about 80%) are unfortunately stupid and ignorant. I for one am happy when people make content in English (I do as a German too), that way you simply reach a larger audience and you don't have to read subtitles (which is annoying and distracting) I always find accents charming. Of course you will always have downvotes, but here they just seem out of place to me. But what can you do. Just ignore them and that's that!
I watched the hell out of the Matrix when it came out and it was one of my favourite movies. So as soon as I heard of Max Payne and its bullet time mechanics, I was of course impressed. I didn't end up playing the game, but I was impressed anyway. XD I played Worms Armageddon and it looks very much like World Party. And yes, tons of fun. :D Anachronox seems very interesting. I admit I don't know what defines a JRPG apart from its country of origin. But I appreciate a game with a good story. :)
Max Payne was really fun, and something else to what was available. The fact that you couldn't get lost in it, or fail if you gave it a little bit of effort, was not a problem, cause the lower difficulty was nicely countered by the fun-factor. Armageddon is arguably the best Worms, so you've experienced everything that there was to experience. :)
@OldAndNewVideoGames An FPS with no mazes would feel a bit lacking to me. But not to worry. I'd find ways to get lost in Max Payne too. It's a skill. ;) I also heard that Armageddon was the best. :) I also managed to play it in multiplayer before. I really liked that Worms had such personality. That you could name them and give them funny voices or bread loaf tombstones when they sadly hit the bucket. My usual set of voices was soldiers. Which one do you like best?
@@TeaAndFloppyDisks Any game that allows you to name your characters does something good. Cause it lures you in into forming a rapport with the character/-s without you even realising it, and you feel more obliged to do well and complete the game. To answer your question: I don't remember. Wacky maybe?
@@OldAndNewVideoGames On that note, I'd like to rename Doomguy. Maybe to Guydoom. Guydoom Threepwood. Though I found some ways online of making custom soundbanks. :D
Max Payne - I love this game, and Max Payne 2. I never played the third one though. You know what bugs me though? Max Payne controls exactly like a first person shooter. You move with the keyboard, aim with the mouse, and Max is always facing the same direction as the camera. Everyone agrees that Max Payne is a classic, and nobody ever complained about the controls. However now, it's been universally decided that all third person games MUST have separate controls for the camera and the character. And instead of just aiming with the mouse, now you have to use a lock-on system. WHY??? Aliens vs. Predator 2 - While I did enjoy this game, it felt even more heavily scripted than the first game. Also, while playing as the predator, I was cloaked, and on high ground in the forest section, but every time I tried to target marines on the ground below me, they instantly knew I was there. It didn't matter how high I was, or how far away they were, they ALWAYS saw me.
Oh man... I shall blame you for it forever! ;) You know how you not notice something at all, and just carry on with your life, until suddenly, someone out of the blue points that out, and from that point in time, you can't un-see it? Yep, that's what happened here with Max Payne. xD
0:38 I think you got it wrong thinking Matrix was first. Bullettime was actually used earlier in, of all things, a Björk videoclip. I think it was also used in an Asian Movie called Hardboiled before it even found its way into the Matrix. Max Payne was first as a game tho.
No, bullet time was first used in orginal System Shock (dermal stim, don't remember, reflex maybe?). Then Requiem Avenging Angel as one of protagonist unlockable angelic power.
As always you did a great video with this 2001 chapter generation. Very good scripts and presentation! Keep on it man! - greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
Thank you! :) The next one should be out this Sunday.
Anachronox looks really interesting! That's a game I had no idea about. Thank you, Janosik!
You're welcome! Why don't you give it a go?
One of the funniest games ever made, Anachronox should be a case study for people who write game plots and dialogue.
I discovered it like 5 years ago. It's one of the most fun games Ive ever played
