I would also check the drains on the bottom of the car underneath the area where that junction box is housed. Seeing as it's covered over in plastic, I think Subaru expected some degree of water intrusion in that area. If there are drains, and they are plugged, that area may fill up high enough to allow water to flow into the cabin. That said, I definitely think you were right about those little holes.
I have a Volvo v50 in uk that over night had exactly the same amount of water and it was a sunroof pipe blocked causing the water to back up over flow the tray around the sunroof then run down the pillars . A quick blow with compressed air fixed my fault .hope yours stays dry 👍🏻
I've had a similar problem with my old Mercedes. This build up of water can be the result of months of water ingress and because it is trapped under the carpet it never dries out. The real issue is that the foam backing will stay saturated for a long time unless you use an aqua Vac to dry it out thoroughly. Do not be tempted to reinstate carpet foam even if it is slightly damp as it will become mouldy and smell.
This is great! My truck had the same thing happen to it and i had a hard time believing a tiny little hole could fill the car with water, hasnt happened since i plopped some silicone in the hole. Glad to see its plausible!
***** well it goes into the door jamb, but then migrates into the interior via that huge hole for the junction box...but I agree a design flaw nonetheless.
I have the exact same problem right now with my 2003 WRX STi. It is a UK RHD model so where you were looking at passenger side is my drivers side. The two carpets front and back on the drivers side were soaking wet. On driver rear carpet there was enough water to rise ABOVE the top carpet and form a pool on carpet. In last few days I have had all sorts of electrical problems - the subwoofer in boot was not working (I found out that the 20A fuse in it had blown), the Clifford G5 car alarm was going off randomly at night and would not turn off or respond to the key FOB to turn off, and the central locking mechanism was going haywire, continually locking/unlocking. I have also had the engine cut out completely at traffic lights and would not start again for about two minutes. So when I pulled apart that side of car and lifted carpet I could see about 3/4" pool of water under carpet and the felt underlay completely saturated. All these problems started happening after the car went into the garage last month to get the drivers side over wheel fender panel replaced after it was damaged in a slight side impact which dented the old panel and smashed side-indicator light - coincidence? Or dodgy repair causing water to now get in from rain somehow? Still haven't diagnosed problem or fixed completely - only found all this today!
That's a lot of water and the water appeared to be clean. Odd that spray from the tyres would not be dirty water. You mentioned your friend recently purchased the car! My guess would be the location you found is correct but the source may have come from a pre sale spring clean and a good pressure washer giving those wheel wells a wash out. Those looked pretty clean as well.
I had to replace both front wheel bearing assemblies on my 00 lesabre because my mechanic torqued them down so hard I had to use a long cheater pipe to remove them. My small impact wouldn't touch em. I never said anything to him because at some point Buick changed the torque specs to like 118ft lbs from I'm thinking the original was over 200 ft lbs. So a very honest mistake as maybe he relied on memory of others or had old torque chart. Very nice job on finding that deluge port or ports I should say. Guessing when a lot of water was on the roads was like turning on spray nozzle on a water hose. Simple but effective fix you did. Another great video !
Yes! DRAIN THE SWAMP! :) I stayed up later than normal that night, but I had to go to bed - the suspense was killing me. I prayed ... and found in the morning my prayer was answered! Subaru dealer would've sold him a new power steering pump, head gasket, heater core, and transmission on that one, and explained in a round about way how they're all related ... somehow. That'll be $14,567.33 please! :D I may be confusing Subaru with GM here. Yeah, I think I am ... HAHAHA!
You should get some plexiglass and line the floor and turn that puppy into a Subequarium.😃👍. At least you got it before it got moldy and stinky lol. Nice find. Keep up the good work.
That's a lot of water. Water leaks can be hard to find sometimes but the worse part is drying everything out before putting it all back together to prevent mold and the swamp smell. Hopefully you fixed it either way water was coming in thru those retainer holes. Sometimes I'll use my smoke machine on the hard ones. Nice video.
Wow, that's a lot of water. Yeah, I stayed up too and couldn't be happier. In the old days we always suspected the heater core, but in this case the road grime was a good observation. My hats off the owner for getting on this repair. That could have caused a lot of rust in the future. Great job Ivan.
Needed a couple of these grommets for my Tacoma bumper. Ended up buying 60 on eBay for 5 bucks. Same thing. Insert a plastic plug through the hole It has an opening in middle. Then you push another plastic pin in it.
Good video again. you're patience and determination won. The bolt in this way will be a major aggravation in removing the inner fender panel again. If the OEM plug is not needed maybe just put you're bolt under the panel, not through them both. The whole mess maybe just a mental block. I've had a lot of these in 50 years of auto repair. avoid the dealer at all cost's. Why? They may have the answer. Simply plug in the correct plastic plug.. Maybe they break easily when removed and somebody did front axles? Any way good job. Keep going.
Draining the swamp would be a whole class of people who use power and influence, not just Washington DC. Thank you, good video, different politics than me.
3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive or seam sealer, dab in hole, flatten both surfaces. Those holes acted like pressure nozzles. After you think it's all dry- sprinkle a 10 lb bag of rice around before reinstalling the interior.
Great suggestions. Dang didn't think about the rice but the car is all back together now. I'm sure we'll see if my fix works or not...I sincerely hope it does because draining that pool was a pain in the ass!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics hi Ivan does that car have a sunroof? I couldn't tell watching the video on my phone. I think those holes in the wheel well liner are the drains for sunroof. Not sure what they would be if the car doesn't have sunroof or why the push pin retainer was missing. I've watched the other 2 videos and have seen the other issues with the car leaking. And i know this is 2 years old and in the 3rd video at the end you said it is finally dry inside at all times. Just curious about sunroof though. Thumbs up as always! You're very thorough in everything you do. And is a complete joy watching you and listening to your thought process and resolutions. I hope you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving 2018!
After much investigation I think I found the reason for water under the passenger seats of a 2013 Subaru Forester. Blocked drain hose from the sun roof. Not at the top but kinked tube at the exit point in the wheel well. Needed to take off the cover inside the wheel well behind front tyre. There was a plastic white coloured exit hole which had to pop off. The tube attached to this was badly kinked blocking water.
Make sure you dry her out 100% Ivan otherwise it'll stink to high heaven!! I've had some experience with this issue in the past. Worst one I've had was a Fiesta where the heater core went to lunch and flooded the front floor. Nothing like the smell of rotten ethylene glycol first thing in the morning...had to remove the under felt and carpet and thoroughly wash it and dry. In the end it would have been easier and quicker to visit the local Ford salvage yard and retrieve one from a wreck.Good luck and cheers.Nearly 10K subs,
Also had this problem on a 1997 impreza. Was missing a plastic clip in the windshield wiper cover. The hole for the clip is right above the "hvac intake"
it really seems implausible that little hole could cause that big of a leak!!?? I guess if it fixed it completely than holy crap but hot damn that was a lot of water
Should have realised when you saw the same hole on the other side and yet no water coming in on that side, that it was NOT the cause of the water intrusion!
If you are going to leave the bolts in there you should put some strip calk around them so they actually seal up. I would also use a garden hose around the entire car to make sure there isn't a leak still.
I currently have a leak in my 2009 Subaru forester and after seeing your video I will check for unplugged holes and at the moment I believe I get wet back back passenger side from not driving in rain ? I put towels down before rain and am in California and no rain in a long time to check more and moving to Seattle in March and have to be ready for that ? Thank you for video :)
I had a similar problem on a BMW that I traced to an air conditioning evaporator drain. It was draining under the carpet instead of outside. I actually noticed it by the lack of water on the ground. I did not bother to completely dry it out. It never smelt.
check under the windshield cowell I've seen theses get water in threw the heater air intake due to plugged drains or a water dam missing when some one changed the cabin filter
My Chevy Cobalt had almost a foot of water in the trunk. Heard it sloshing around one day, lifted up the carpet and the spare tire well (and factory battery) was completely under water. I dried it all out and used a garden hose to try and find the source. Crawled into the trunk with a flashlight. Couldn't find it. After a big rain same problem, trunk was full of water. Turned out to be the sunroof drain. The hose had popped off the elbow that directs it outside the car so it was just pouring all the water right into the trunk :( I figured the hose popped off the elbow because it was completely blocked up, looked like something made a nest in there.
You should have use o-rings in between the screw/nut and the panels. Eventually water will seep through the bolts. Marginal quantity sure, but still humidity. And the best/easiest way to dry a car interior, a dehumidifier. Close doors and windows, leave it in there sucking up the moisture and the car will be dry way faster.
I would expect that material of the fender skirts being snugged down by the bolts and nuts will act as a seal. Or maybe didn't mention adding a little silicone or permatex. I'm confident he didn't just slap something on there that he thought would not seal. And also nothing wrong with your suggestion.
I kept having the passenger front footwell fill up on my Jeep Cherokee. I was thinking it was the roof leaking or windshield seal leaking. Turns out the right rear quarter panel had rusted out behind the plastic bumper end cap. Water would come in through that and run down hill to the front foot well. I'm sure I'll be replacing the floors soon after that.
I'm very surprised that so much water would come through a comparatively small hole - especially since it would have to enter, then splash against that junction box, then make it' way past the box to the interior. I would have thought maybe water running off the roof and down the A-pillar, then entering via the flex joint, since most of the water coming off the windscreen and off the roof would have to drain down this pillar. Then again, that's probably why I'm not an automotive diagnostician. :-P
Interesting, was going to say, might wanna just leave the stuff out aside from the driver's seat til the next rainstorm. As to election night and especially the day after... Best. Day. Ever. #thedeplorableswin
motoYam82 I had a similar issue with a '01 Focus hatch. I got inside and a friend hosed he car down from all directions while I looked for the point of ingress. The pressure was pretty good for replicating what the water would do coming off a tire, so long as you remember to reach underneath and hit it from all different angles. (PS: found the leak, too - turns out it was a body joint where the joint sealer was starting to dry out and crack.) Make sure you let us know what happens next time it rains! :-)
My 2015 sti does this on the driver side. When im not driving it. I only drive it maybe once a month and when ir rains ghe front and back get soaked. I mean if it rains hard one night ill have a pool on the back drivers floor i had at least 4 inches once. All seals look good.
Oh yeah, that's a flood. Car will never be the same I'm afraid. As bad as this is, VW/Audi's have it soundly beaten. Watch a couple of Thomas Exovcds' vids on water infiltration. Gotta see it to believe it. Thanks Ivan.
I have an 08 forester same issue passenger side leak no side wetness though ac drain clear the plastic at the bottom of the windshield is missing the plugs which made the plastic drop below could that be the issue?
Seems like the Subaru's need quite a bit of attention..I had a '73 Subaru back in the late '70's and it was probably worse than the ZAZ you worked on last summer.
How often do you take off fender liners? I just want this to stay put. Wonder why the original push pins were BOTH missing? Not taking another chance on creating a swamp lol
True and understood. I agree it's strange. Are there any components behind the fender liners? If so perhaps there was some kind of repair and the clips were forgotten?
I doubt those 2 holes allowed that much water to get in by being splashed with water by the wheels. Maybe it's been in an accident and there is a big gap behind those wheel liners, or *the air intake for the evaporator in front of the firewall is letting the water in????*
I was expecting a leaking radiator behind the dashboard but nothing this extreme!!! Had the rad start to leak on my impreza RB5 edition which let water run down the passenger footwell
looks like he is going to appoint Jamie Dimon for treasury secretary. If you know anything about that position you would know that he is not planning to drain any swamp and may already be enjoying hanging out in that swamp. LOL
Go look at any car, make or model, it has the same thing. it is the only way to attach a inner fender. Now the fact that you have both fenders with holes seems like sabotage to me. Somebody took a drill and tapped through the screw They are not holes, they are tapped for a screw to go through there to hold the inner fender. I have a 1998 and 2001 Legacy. Screw goes there but it is not a hole. There is a piece of metal that is on the other side that hold the screw in place. I have never had any water inside any of my Subarus. My 1998 sits out in the field in the weather, there is not even mildew in it or anything. The only time you get moisture inside a car is if it has been in a wreck or somebody replaced some glass whether it is on the doors or windshield. They don't ever do it right. This car has clearly been fucked with.
what a crappy design! I cant believe that a plastic rivet is all that separates the wheel well from the passenger compartment.while the inner fenders should always be replaced if they fall off it's not uncommon to see someone without one. I believe you got this nailed, that's totally feasible where all that water came from. since he just bought that car I wonder if the fender liners were pulled back / out for a bumper fix or front repaint recently and it didn't get driven in the rain much till your friend got it. at least it wasn't salt water!
1992 Chevy Silverado, 5.7L 2wd TBI Crank no start condition! This only happened when I tested the cruise control module and I've already put a PCM in it had it running for about an hour and a half. Turned it off following day went to go move it, no fuel threw the injectors but the injectors work when I test them!
I've traced it to the harness under the dash, but without the proper tools and knowledge to to figure out what and the Thunder is going on I am trying to leave it in the professionals hands
Don't buy subaru. I own a 2021 subaru outback when it rains water enter through the passenger side door. I got a loaner car a subaru outback same issue.
I had a pesky leak in a Toyota Yaris that I couldn't pin down. Must have been 5 or 6 litres in the floor once the carpets were out. Tried all sorts. Turned out that it had been in some sort of collision and there was a crease in the pinch weld under the windscreen, the water was running down the back of the bulkhead under the soundproofing. The body place had put new panels and done a respray but the damage was still just about evident. New Subaru stuff is a little disappointing. Nothing will be as good as 90's/early 00's Suby stuff. Drain the swamp! Yeah. I stayed up till 9 in the morning here in the UK to watch. Thank God it's over. Looks like no WW3. Plus Hillary can't fuck us for daring to vote Brexit. If that's all we get I say it was a pretty good result.
motoYam82 The definitive Farage speech is where he mocks EU primeminister Herman Van Rumpoy "You have the charisma of a damp rag and the appearance of a low grade bank clerk". He sounds a lot like Winston Churchill when he gets going. Brexit and the Donald are only the start. There are elections in Austria, France, Holland, Germany. A referendum in Italy and there must be an election there by May 2018.
Before the election you guys were saying we would go to war with Russia if Trump gets elected. Now you are saying he is a puppet of Russia? Makes perfect sense.

arciefan That plastic was to hard. And it's a fender well. Water will be projected hard against that area. I would go the extra mile.
kool. but the driver side didnt get flooded? and that plug was missing also. could also be weather stripping but the car is in good condition.
T U! You are a more thorough mechanic than the Bozos at Briggs Subaru in Topeka, KS!!!
Seems to me there should be a drain in the fender. Can't believe a plastic rivet is making is making it waterproof.
From one deplorable to another . . . Congratulations!
The carpeting and all of the padding that got wet needs to be taken into a warm dry area and left to dry. This could take 3 - 5 days.

Comfort modules on VWs. You would not believe the amount of water the VW Groupm allows in a car floor board.

Hello Ivan.
I have told everyone I know that missing inner fender well fasteners causes issues not only rain intrusion but rust development
If there were pop rivets in those holes, why not just reinstall them?

Not for nothing but putting in a bolt and nut will really complicate taking off the fender liners. Why not just get a few push in clips?
How often do you take off fender liners? I just want this to stay put. Wonder why the original push pins were BOTH missing? Not taking another chance on creating a swamp lol
True and understood. I agree it's strange. Are there any components behind the fender liners? If so perhaps there was some kind of repair and the clips were forgotten?
I doubt those 2 holes allowed that much water to get in by being splashed with water by the wheels. Maybe it's been in an accident and there is a big gap behind those wheel liners, or *the air intake for the evaporator in front of the firewall is letting the water in????*
Perhaps...that is the only sign of water intrusion that I found. The true test will be the next rainstorm...
Do not agree I bet this did not fix it
That floor carpet will soon smell moldy. Depending how long it was wet. Because of the water invasion damage.
LOL
Oh man I sincerely hope not :( The swamp is powerful and can suck anyone in.
Needs more Flex Seal.......
Bodyman; who the heck put a bolt in that hole!?
i had a 2005 volvo xc90 that had 25 gallons of water in it from rain so just imagine how bad that leak was it filled the whole lower half of the car
25 gallons?!?! WTF that's insane! Sounds like it had good door seals LOL
Wow, suddenly I don't feel so bad about my 25 year old vehicle having drips around the windshield. Thanks!
haha yeah this was a freak occurrence, but still not acceptable for an 8-year old vehicle. Silicone caulk works great for sealing windshields.
Love the weird stuff.
This looks like design flaw . And the fix is not nice, that plastic thing isn t supposed to be taken out ?
DRAIN THE SWAMP!!
+jake ounce Yes!!!!!!!!! LOCK HER UP!!!!!!!!!
I think it was a missing fuse.
nooooooooooooo lol
James Schrumm bilge pump?
Joe Shearer Not a boat, sump pump.Lol...
haha. draining the swamp!
What is PCM please?!!
what a crappy design!
Yeah I was thinking the same thing...salt water would have been a disaster!!
probable had head gaskets replaced--like all subarus eventually do--and broke off those rubber plugs and never replaced them.
No head gaskets are original. In fact that's the next job that the owner wants me to do with this vehicle ;) I
no silicone calking being you knew there was going to be water ???
call Eric , he's got tons of those plastic doohickeys
Subaru engineers should have fixed this bad problem. Company should fix problems and damages free to owners
how can I get a hold of you directly Ivan? I have an interesting case study for you!
shoot me a private message :)
1992 Chevy Silverado, 5.7L 2wd TBI
Crank no start condition! This only happened when I tested the cruise control module and I've already put a PCM in it had it running for about an hour and a half. Turned it off following day went to go move it, no fuel threw the injectors but the injectors work when I test them!
I NEED help
I've traced it to the harness under the dash, but without the proper tools and knowledge to to figure out what and the Thunder is going on I am trying to leave it in the professionals hands
What other information do you think you need to know in order to assist me
That is bonkers that a miss 1p plastic fixing could potentially write off a vehicle.
*write
Gregory May missed that one on the grammar check before posting :-(
Ivan use a shower head to look for leaks and than when it's repaired re shower to check.
nice ☺
That's a terrible design. Those push clips are not designed to seal out water.
Well go to a junkyard and find yourself a couple of retainers. They have popped out due to stress.
That was my thought too. I hope the bolts will hold up a bit better.
Yes they will but protect them against rust.
Cool video. So you are in the basket of deplorables too? lol
My guess, A/C Drane blocked.
It was clear, first thing I checked :)
take it to a drive thru car wash
that's a design flaw in my opinion
I've been watching some Nigel Farage vids too...very refreshing straight-talker with a sense of humor :)
motoYam82 The definitive Farage speech is where he mocks EU primeminister Herman Van Rumpoy "You have the charisma of a damp rag and the appearance of a low grade bank clerk". He sounds a lot like Winston Churchill when he gets going.
Brexit and the Donald are only the start. There are elections in Austria, France, Holland, Germany. A referendum in Italy and there must be an election there by May 2018.
No way all that CLEAN water entered the cabin through those tiny holes. That's a FLOOD car if there ever was one. Probably why it was for sale.
Definitely wasn't wet when he bought it...I was there lol!
spray those bolts with rubber undercoating so they don't rust out. very poor design Subaru!
I used stainless bolts for this fix...a must for our salty winter climate.
I stayed up until 3:30 am nd also celebrated..... :-)
Thumbs down for Trump comment
I don't remember mentioning anyone named Trump... ? ;)
Well it is widely accepted that this has been a great result for Russia after all! :)
Before the election you guys were saying we would go to war with Russia if Trump gets elected. Now you are saying he is a puppet of Russia?
Makes perfect sense.
celebration after the election?
Shame on you Subaru, shoddy design. Imagine if you hadn't checked the other side.
Honestly I was disappointed in three wheel bearings going bad before 100k miles. Almost like a Hyundai haha
What a crapy design
keep the politics out of this channel please.
"Subaru is a MESS" - Donald J. Trump :p
glad to hear you're on the trump train. MAGA!!!
