Great look on that 109, now we need a foamboard Sturmvogel, I bet a MS ME-262 would look amazing. BTW, as a former plastic sale model builder, I cant help but point out that the germans stopped using straight line splinter camo about the same time as they went from green to grey colors. Also, the yellow on the nose was sometimes sprayed over the camo, and the camo could show through.
@@AntsRC Yeah, well, it wasnt ment as critisism, more as a hint on that you can actually paint a 109 as you want. If you check out some 109 paint schemes, you will see that the germans got quite creative, and virtually no 109 was painted alike, unlike f.i british planes .
Great intro on foamboard spray painting... To keep the tape from lifting paint, try a little Hot Air (I use a hair dryer or hot air gun) on the tape. It seems to make the adhesive "less sticky"! (That also works on getting most "Stuck" labels off, too!). Good job of that paint scheme...
I have been painting my electric models with matte acrylic paint from Michaels for many years now without an issue. You can use latex exterior house paint for the same purpose, and this paint actually resists fumes from gas engines. The only thing you need to watch out is to use clear epoxy if you need to use nitro engine on the airplane.
Remember it's always wise to start with the lightest color such as you did. It's hard to paint yellow over any color without a bright primer first. So I always start with the lightest color first.
Aww guys this was awesome !! I'm in Canada, the FAA doesn't care what I think, but they have to see the family value you bring to the hobby !! Hoping FTCA becomes a large voice !!
Awesome video!! Seeing that zero in the background is getting my hopes up. I would love to see all the historical warbirds become kits or plans. But the zero is one of my favorites!! Keep up the good work
Great video. I have always been terrible at painting models. Just as FT has given me the confidence to design and build more than I thought possible, this video has given me the confidence to turn my white and brown planes into beautifully painted models. I would love to see a Canadair CL-415 on the channel
John, thanks for all the good tips. I like the quick-and-dirty approach. Have you ever used shelf paper as a mask? It's low tack and works well for cutting stencils.
The plane looks great. One trick I have found that works well is to take an old sock and put some baby powder in it. Any where you are going to mask, dust lightly and place tape on that area. The paint will absorb any excess amount of the baby powder and will release from the tape leaving a crisp line. You do not need to overdo the powder, a little will work great.
Ive used this same brand, just remember to scuff the surface lightly before painting or you can have peeling problems if you try to mask with any kind of self adhesive tape. 200 grit paper works really well.
Loved it man, I've been spray painting my FT planes for many years and still got some great tips from this video. Look forward to more like this. Great job.
I’m really excited for the new plane..I have a bit of an obsession with bf 109s lol. I’ve got a bit of a question tho... 19:00 for masking the pattern, can I just use printer paper instead of foam? Thanks
Do you find that the rustoleum spray paint eats away at any of the bare foam edges? I make micros and dont have paper on any on them and found that the paints I had available were eating away at the foam. I havnt tried any of the paint and primer paints
being a new modeler we find means and methods hard to find, so we just stumble upon them, like this.. AND you can use minwax wipe on poly and rust-oleum oil base enamel directly on FOAM, we discovered this while painting an Arrow foam Corsair. I happened to get some oil base paints on the foam packing and realized that not only does it not dissolve the foam, it bonds very well to the foam. The cheap paint that came on the plane peeled off with some Blue tape after I had painted with some latex water base paints; We even poured some paint thinner on the foam and it pooled on the foam but Did Not Dissolve the foam. Yes, you can coat your Foam plane with oil base poly, paint etc, resulting in a Hard structural skin.
question- does this foam you're painting on this plane still have the paper on the outer coat? so its not technically painting directly onto the foam itself but more onto actual foam paper etc.
Hi! I am planning a winter build of a Short Solent flying boat. They were traditionally white/cream in colour. Unfortunately, over the last few years it has become impossible to get white depron sheet, and I have grey (large sheets) depron to use for the build. Do you have any advice on how I would proceed with 'killing' the grey, and getting a nice white finish, please? Once again, thank you, take care, you and yours, Den, Cymru (Wales)
Great job, John! Did you ever weight the plane before and after painting? I don't think that is too much added weight, just curious. And about your last question, I would LOVE to see a quad motors, a Lancaster or something like that. Thanks
Interesting, they say that the Blue Angles and Thunderbirds have to get used to the glossy paint jobs compared to combat flat versions, apparently the combat version is less slippery providing better surface control, wonder if it is the same on the models?
John, thank you for a very informative video, a lot of useful information. One question/gripe I have about the scale series of models. if I'm going to spend time and effort on making a scale model, why can't you make available as an option, vacuum formed clear canopies? I have put off building any of the scale series just because I think opaque canopies ruin the look of the aircraft. With all the resources at the disposal of flight test, I can't see that a vacuum formed canopy would be asking too much. thank you for letting me voice my opinion.
I don’t want to go back to building the old way but I miss my stol trainer aircraft and would like a nice looking cub, Storch, or maybe wilga (might want to wait for draco x to get started tho)
I am building a P-47 out of Adams (Dollar Tree) Foam Board. Is it the same procedure ? I remember seeing the use Min Wax Polyurethane B-4 painting Is that needed?
I'd like to see the spitfires cousin The Hawker Hurricane as a speed build, this would be a great stablemate for the Spitfire. And I love'd both the build video and the paint tip video, keep up the great work guys, and by the way I'm across the pond lol
Gliders, over wings. I'm trying to start my kids of various ages into the hobby. I've a p51-d scale warbird which they're not going near.. It I want some planes which I can get them started on. I've done paper planes, but I was looking for some "making" And as I know your background.... Could we have some airframe designs so that they can be wrapped? A foil wrap, tissue and glue, vinal maybe??? Oh, landing gear... Fixed and not. I think this is fairly easy to do.
@@MrRaginglizard really? I do it all the time and notice a huge dip in quality. I've used both frog tape and 3M blue tape, and frog tape is deffinetly better. That said, if you take the masking tape, pull it on your pants/shirt, and then use a straight edge and razor to cut a new edge, it works beautifully.
I'd really like to see an Australian CAC Boomerang as plans for home building. It's a mostly forgotten aircraft of the second world war. It's one I'm looking to try and build myself using your methods but plans from Test Fite would be great.
Where does one get this BF-109? I'm on the FT store site and don't see it anywhere.
Lets be honest i had to watch twice. Once to hear john and another too see the future planes in the back!!
Just wanted to say THANKS for the painting tips. Well done.
The Bob Ross of maker foam right there!!! That was very gratifying and informative :) Love videos like this!

I’d love to see you do a de Havilland Mosquito at some point this year

John is definitly one of the best builders Ive seen. Im really exited about the jets :D
Your intro "disclaimer" described me perfectly! THAT had me hooked!

Can you please inform when and where this kit or plans will be available? Your designs are awesome and I would really like to buy and build a Bf109.
Thanks for sharing your techniques on one of my favorite planes .

Love the video. Just as relaxing to watch as a Bixler build video.

Are any of those planes in the background being released soon?
AT-6 Texan, John!
Great vid! FT 2020 is looking amazing, already! Thanks!

I’ve been looking for this plane on your website. Where can I find it?
Show motor going in! Great video, no need to get so nervous, you're very right about not worrying!!!
Rough as Guts and Rushed.. Perfect!
A TA 152H and a SU 34 would be two great planes to build. Thanks John
Thank you! Very informative and I picked up a lot of great information.
Bob
de Havilland DH98 Mosquito Please! Shouldn't be too tricky, just a variation on your already made P38 Lightning. Piece of cake!
That was the best demo video I have ever seen. Thanks hugely. Only wish the paint cans we get were that good.
OMG I can see a Catalina!! 38:21 Please release this soon 3:45
Omg yes, please sell the Catalina
Inspiring! Great job! I'm just trying to do something super-basic with my kids on their first foam models, but this was super inspiring.
Lockheed, skunk works, U2
I would love to see that plain featured and added to the flight test fleet.
John, thanks for all the good tips. I like the quick-and-dirty approach. Have you ever used shelf paper as a mask? It's low tack and works well for cutting stencils.
Are the planes in the back two P-40 (1:39) ? The two planes on the far left and right side. Is this a master series build?

Glad he put upfront that it's speed painting. I can do a bad job already.
So many cool planes in the background

Please do a BF109 VS SPITFIRE fpv dog fight with airsoft!
@Black Metal Dash they could double the size
@Black Metal Dash Thats true
YES PLEASE
Yes!!!!! It would be amazing
How to Build the FT BF-109 Please please
Can the Rustoleum Paint-Primer be used on fiberglass aircraft parts?
I really enjoyed watching this - thanks.

Well done @Flitetest.
Well played John!! EVERYBODY was expecting the Spitfire... YOU bring out the BF-109!!! 😳😁😎

The spitfire is on the web to preorder
I great job on this. I hope there's a FW-190 in the works (and before the Spitfire). 👼💖🥳👍😎

Please tell me there is gonna be a B-25 this year please because I love that plane
Great instructional as always! Love to see a larger scale Pup in the future.
Is there a different process for the dollar tree foam? Something that keeps the paper from delaminating?
question- does this foam you're painting on this plane still have the paper on the outer coat? so its not technically painting directly onto the foam itself but more onto actual foam paper etc.
I'd really love the Catalina, as someone pointed out there's a model in the hangar
Where did you guys get the spinners from?
We have a line of spinners coming this year. :)
FliteTest Can't wait 😁😁😁
Sometimes you can use the plastic eggs from easter.
This is something I really wanted, thanks a lot

I have found that some weight does occur but it's not typically enough to affect performance unless the plane is from California and pregnant!!
Interesting, they say that the Blue Angles and Thunderbirds have to get used to the glossy paint jobs compared to combat flat versions, apparently the combat version is less slippery providing better surface control, wonder if it is the same on the models?
Wondering if one should pre-scuff all the parts ahead of cutting out the kit or before construction?
when r u gonna make build videos for the f 16 or f14 ???
Was this kit ever released? I want one but can’t find it in the store, I hope I didn’t miss it completely.
Is Rustoleum ok on foamies (EPO, EPP) ? 🤔
The steel wool is going to remove the "Slimmy Feel" from the foam board?
I'd like to see some of these kits fly is there a link for the flight tests.
This video says this plane will be available for purchase in 2020. That was 7 months ago. When will it be ready?
What type of spray paints are you using?
Always excellent, John. Is the Zero next?? Hope so.
Really looking forward to the F18 Hornet and would like to see a Dassault Rafale!
How long does it take miniwax applied to foam to be paintable?
I want to see a Fw 190
any issues with painting on the servos like this?
B=17 would be great! Would love to see one, my grandfather flow in ww2...
Would like to see a P-39 AirCobra and a De Havilland Chipmunk, would buy both as a FT kit.
If the rustoleum paint touches the actual foam. Is there any chance it might "eat" away the foam or is it safe on foam?
I have a styrofoam me 109 gws that I want to build but not sure what to put on the Styrofoam to keep it from eating it
Oh yeayy a great video of great painting tips tutorial for this plane by John!

Can you make a F-4 Phantom?

stick the blue tape to your shirt first, it's much less likely to pull paint.
BirdsEyeView but then your lines will be muddled. Yellow frog tape is the best masking tape I’ve seen. Far superior to that blue stuff.
