Remember it's always wise to start with the lightest color such as you did. It's hard to paint yellow over any color without a bright primer first. So I always start with the lightest color first.
I have been painting my electric models with matte acrylic paint from Michaels for many years now without an issue. You can use latex exterior house paint for the same purpose, and this paint actually resists fumes from gas engines. The only thing you need to watch out is to use clear epoxy if you need to use nitro engine on the airplane.
Great look on that 109, now we need a foamboard Sturmvogel, I bet a MS ME-262 would look amazing. BTW, as a former plastic sale model builder, I cant help but point out that the germans stopped using straight line splinter camo about the same time as they went from green to grey colors. Also, the yellow on the nose was sometimes sprayed over the camo, and the camo could show through.
@@AntsRC Yeah, well, it wasnt ment as critisism, more as a hint on that you can actually paint a 109 as you want. If you check out some 109 paint schemes, you will see that the germans got quite creative, and virtually no 109 was painted alike, unlike f.i british planes .
Great intro on foamboard spray painting... To keep the tape from lifting paint, try a little Hot Air (I use a hair dryer or hot air gun) on the tape. It seems to make the adhesive "less sticky"! (That also works on getting most "Stuck" labels off, too!). Good job of that paint scheme...
The plane looks great. One trick I have found that works well is to take an old sock and put some baby powder in it. Any where you are going to mask, dust lightly and place tape on that area. The paint will absorb any excess amount of the baby powder and will release from the tape leaving a crisp line. You do not need to overdo the powder, a little will work great.
Ive used this same brand, just remember to scuff the surface lightly before painting or you can have peeling problems if you try to mask with any kind of self adhesive tape. 200 grit paper works really well.
@@MrRaginglizard really? I do it all the time and notice a huge dip in quality. I've used both frog tape and 3M blue tape, and frog tape is deffinetly better. That said, if you take the masking tape, pull it on your pants/shirt, and then use a straight edge and razor to cut a new edge, it works beautifully.
Aww guys this was awesome !! I'm in Canada, the FAA doesn't care what I think, but they have to see the family value you bring to the hobby !! Hoping FTCA becomes a large voice !!
John, thanks for all the good tips. I like the quick-and-dirty approach. Have you ever used shelf paper as a mask? It's low tack and works well for cutting stencils.
WARNING: Most important tip not mentioned here. test your paint on a piece of scrap. 2X seems to be ok but the other kind of Rustoleum sips thru the paper and melts the laminating glue. Your plane would end up looking like an accordion.
being a new modeler we find means and methods hard to find, so we just stumble upon them, like this.. AND you can use minwax wipe on poly and rust-oleum oil base enamel directly on FOAM, we discovered this while painting an Arrow foam Corsair. I happened to get some oil base paints on the foam packing and realized that not only does it not dissolve the foam, it bonds very well to the foam. The cheap paint that came on the plane peeled off with some Blue tape after I had painted with some latex water base paints; We even poured some paint thinner on the foam and it pooled on the foam but Did Not Dissolve the foam. Yes, you can coat your Foam plane with oil base poly, paint etc, resulting in a Hard structural skin.
Great video. I have always been terrible at painting models. Just as FT has given me the confidence to design and build more than I thought possible, this video has given me the confidence to turn my white and brown planes into beautifully painted models. I would love to see a Canadair CL-415 on the channel
Awesome video!! Seeing that zero in the background is getting my hopes up. I would love to see all the historical warbirds become kits or plans. But the zero is one of my favorites!! Keep up the good work
Great job, John! Did you ever weight the plane before and after painting? I don't think that is too much added weight, just curious. And about your last question, I would LOVE to see a quad motors, a Lancaster or something like that. Thanks
Do you find that the rustoleum spray paint eats away at any of the bare foam edges? I make micros and dont have paper on any on them and found that the paints I had available were eating away at the foam. I havnt tried any of the paint and primer paints
John, thank you for a very informative video, a lot of useful information. One question/gripe I have about the scale series of models. if I'm going to spend time and effort on making a scale model, why can't you make available as an option, vacuum formed clear canopies? I have put off building any of the scale series just because I think opaque canopies ruin the look of the aircraft. With all the resources at the disposal of flight test, I can't see that a vacuum formed canopy would be asking too much. thank you for letting me voice my opinion.
I’m really excited for the new plane..I have a bit of an obsession with bf 109s lol. I’ve got a bit of a question tho... 19:00 for masking the pattern, can I just use printer paper instead of foam? Thanks
Loved it man, I've been spray painting my FT planes for many years and still got some great tips from this video. Look forward to more like this. Great job.
Lets be honest i had to watch twice. Once to hear john and another too see the future planes in the back!!
Remember it's always wise to start with the lightest color such as you did. It's hard to paint yellow over any color without a bright primer first. So I always start with the lightest color first.
Please keep the warbirds coming guys. Really loving these master series warbirds.

Man it's been ages since Chad Kappa made the original painting tips.

OMFG! A ME-262!!! 😎👍👍 Absolutely yes!
KyrreXXL always has to be one

Just wanted to say THANKS for the painting tips. Well done.
I’d love to see you do a de Havilland Mosquito at some point this year
Me too, all those curves!!
YES!
you should follow johns instagram 'trieditathomeofficial' he posts a lot of his planes on there
ME TOO
So many cool planes in the background
Your intro "disclaimer" described me perfectly! THAT had me hooked!
Rough as Guts and Rushed.. Perfect!
Thanks for sharing your techniques on one of my favorite planes .
The Bob Ross of maker foam right there!!! That was very gratifying and informative :) Love videos like this!

Where does one get this BF-109? I'm on the FT store site and don't see it anywhere.

A TA 152H and a SU 34 would be two great planes to build. Thanks John
Can you please inform when and where this kit or plans will be available? Your designs are awesome and I would really like to buy and build a Bf109.
Please do a BF109 VS SPITFIRE fpv dog fight with airsoft!
@Black Metal Dash they could double the size
@Black Metal Dash Thats true
YES PLEASE
Yes!!!!! It would be amazing
John is definitly one of the best builders Ive seen. Im really exited about the jets :D
Glad he put upfront that it's speed painting. I can do a bad job already.
Love the video. Just as relaxing to watch as a Bixler build video.
Thank you! Very informative and I picked up a lot of great information.
Bob
Well played John!! EVERYBODY was expecting the Spitfire... YOU bring out the BF-109!!! 😳😁😎
Carmine ✈🚂🚙
The spitfire is on the web to preorder
I great job on this. I hope there's a FW-190 in the works (and before the Spitfire). 👼💖🥳👍😎
OMG I can see a Catalina!! 38:21 Please release this soon 3:45
Omg yes, please sell the Catalina
de Havilland DH98 Mosquito Please! Shouldn't be too tricky, just a variation on your already made P38 Lightning. Piece of cake!
Ive used this same brand, just remember to scuff the surface lightly before painting or you can have peeling problems if you try to mask with any kind of self adhesive tape. 200 grit paper works really well.
I really enjoyed watching this - thanks.
Beautiful work and explanation 👌🏼
stick the blue tape to your shirt first, it's much less likely to pull paint.
BirdsEyeView but then your lines will be muddled. Yellow frog tape is the best masking tape I’ve seen. Far superior to that blue stuff.
Was about to comment this lol.

Are any of those planes in the background being released soon?
Show motor going in! Great video, no need to get so nervous, you're very right about not worrying!!!
A gret paintjob l really enjoyed your video
Great job. That helped me alot.

Outstanding video!!
Very nice...thanks!

that just happened to me.. my plane looks like crap because the paint melted it
Solvent vs water based?
2x must be water based
AT-6 Texan, John!
Great vid! FT 2020 is looking amazing, already! Thanks!
Hope these bf109s come out soon. I can't wait to build one. Any idea how soon they will be available??
Thanks

Lockheed, skunk works, U2
I would love to see that plain featured and added to the flight test fleet.

Geebee racer.....love to see one
Am i the only one whose eyes went straight for all the planes in the background?
Well done @Flitetest.
Awesome video!! Seeing that zero in the background is getting my hopes up. I would love to see all the historical warbirds become kits or plans. But the zero is one of my favorites!! Keep up the good work
That nose needs a little swirl on it.....
and a swastika on the tail... just for accuracy sake purely.
and tell how the cones were made???????????????????
Well done, thanks for the video. Missed the crickets though, lol.
This is something I really wanted, thanks a lot
That was the best demo video I have ever seen. Thanks hugely. Only wish the paint cans we get were that good.
A very helpful video - Thanks for sharing your expertise!
great job.... how about the f18..
Good painting video.
Love to see a B-17 and the SR71 Blackbird
Very helpful. Thank you. Future plane is eady. F-14 Tomcat.
Inspiring! Great job! I'm just trying to do something super-basic with my kids on their first foam models, but this was super inspiring.
Great video, John!
Great video . Is the 109 a lazer kit and where can I get one?
Great job, John! Did you ever weight the plane before and after painting? I don't think that is too much added weight, just curious. And about your last question, I would LOVE to see a quad motors, a Lancaster or something like that. Thanks
I have found that some weight does occur but it's not typically enough to affect performance unless the plane is from California and pregnant!!
I’ve been looking for this plane on your website. Where can I find it?
where can i get the jets prints or kits that are behind you? look awesome'
Really fun and informative video. Hope to see more videos with you doing tips like these!
Please tell me there is gonna be a B-25 this year please because I love that plane
John Overstreet please release new plans builds we are waiting ...
Great instructional as always! Love to see a larger scale Pup in the future.
Always excellent, John. Is the Zero next?? Hope so.
I'd really love the Catalina, as someone pointed out there's a model in the hangar
Would like to see a P-39 AirCobra and a De Havilland Chipmunk, would buy both as a FT kit.
Wow that was cool
Really looking forward to the F18 Hornet and would like to see a Dassault Rafale!
"Wartime production"
You made my day XD

Oh yeayy a great video of great painting tips tutorial for this plane by John!
that was a pretty cool job
Nice coloring john....doesn't the rustoleum spray paint eat the foam?...love your coloring combinations😍👍🏻
I would die for a Japanese zero speed build kit
I want de Havilland Mosquito so bad John. No free plan available on the internet.
Do you find that the rustoleum spray paint eats away at any of the bare foam edges? I make micros and dont have paper on any on them and found that the paints I had available were eating away at the foam. I havnt tried any of the paint and primer paints

How to Build the FT BF-109 Please please

Awesome build and paint. Any reason for the pusher prop? How is the foam spinner mounted, and what rpm can it tolerate?
Can the Rustoleum Paint-Primer be used on fiberglass aircraft parts?
Masterful work. Really enjoyed the whole process. 👍

absolutely 🙂🙂
I want to see a Fw 190
Great! Thanks a lot!

Good work John can you do a Spitfire spray job Please !
The Spitfire is available for preorder on the FT website and it looks sick.

Ok, so this is for people using spray cans and are looking to do it quickly, be nice to see you all do a more updated video on air brushing tbh
Love it John! What's next.....
Loved it man, I've been spray painting my FT planes for many years and still got some great tips from this video. Look forward to more like this. Great job.
Excellent
Would like to see a build on the F6F Hellcat
