You've convinced me, Jamie. Shakur needs to stay with Top Rank. That's his best play. There is an endless parade of punditry right now saying the thing Shakur needs to do is put on a spectacular performance, like that will address his problems of being blackballed. But I am deeply skeptical of this argument.
How does a KO performance convince people who already think they can't beat you on points, that you aren't a draw, and the risk heavily outweighs the reward change that view? He can put on a showstopping clinic. It won't likely change that equation. Shakur needs to force his way into position to unify and Top Rank allows him to accomplish that goal.
I don't know if it's possible now. Shakur has definitely burned some bridges this last year. Looking good this weekend alone is not going to cut it. And Bud's early career quiescence should be his canary in the coal-mine.
It's shame too because I think Shakur has a better shot at beating Loma than Tank. All that said, I hope he goes out there brings a fight to very game Harutyunyan, even if just to shut people up. I'm not betting that it will work either, honestly. But boxing fans are capricious. Only time will tell.
Shakur problem is he run his mouth too much, when he was humble and maintained the clean cut image, he wasn’t under a microscope of scrutiny.
I think a great KO performance would help develop him into more of a draw, that’s the argument at least.
