Your attention to detail on your videos is like no one else. The labeled timed stamps, chapters, links, etc. The boys at Tactical Bassin better watch out!!
Great video Tyler! Any more it seems like a mid to low 7-speed is mid range. A 6-speed is great for cranking and I go down to a 5.4 for 10XD. I simplify it by thinking any bait I move with the reel I want a slower speed. Any bait I use the rod to move (pitching hopping dragging) I want a higher gear. Also remember long casts reduce the diameter of the reel reducing the effective gear ratio at the start of your retrieve. That’s why you need reduce your retrieve speed or action the closer your bait gets to you.
Great video. I have two 8.1:1 reels and then the rest are 6.8-7.5:1. Use the the 8.1s for short pitches / flips and target frog casting. Helps with speed like you said getting the lure back in and back out. But for longer casts and anything where I’m using reel to move lure I go with a 6.8 or 7.1-7.5. Going slow is tough for me so I like those ratios.
@@SiliconDrifter yeah definitely. I use 7.1:1 when I want to keep the chatterbait down and then 7.5:1 - 8.1:1 when I want to keep higher in water column

I love your videos Tyler but I have a problem a lot of times I will have a fish and I’ll go to set the hook and my drag is as right as can be when I set it the line will rip out a little making it tough to drive the hook in what is my problem? Also sometimes when I’m fighting a fish my drag will be down tight and when there is pressure from a fish on my reel won’t pick up line cuz my drag is trying to come out at the same time that I’m trying to turn the handle
Tyler, I enjoy your videos as an older angler. This is a Great video explanation! I would add that Roland Martin gave a great example as well when he discussed speed ratio fishing from a boat when trolling is different than the bank because trolling down the shore negates some of the high speed ration because you are moving towards the bait when casting forward…I still struggle to slow either way ;)
Oh, so that was the "red" reel I asked about in the previous video! Lol. Great video and explanation of gear ratios and higher speed reels. That tire fishing experience must have been great.
Hey Tyler I have a baitcaster and a spinning rod and I have been wondering what line to put on them, what do you think I should put on them? Should I put Braid on my baitcaster and mono on my spinner?
I somewhat regret getting an 8:5 Curado DC recently. Been using it for top water stuff. I like it for frogs and buzzbaits but not so sure for others like whopper ploppers. You really have to slow it down for those. Not sure what I think about it yet, I’ll have to use it more once the top water bite picks up. I use a 7:1 or 7:2 for most of my underwater lures. If I could only have one, I’d definitely go with something around 7:5 from my experience so far.
I just started watching your videos and I have learned so much over the past couple weeks. I notice most lures and a lot of soft plastics are made to look like baitfish like the sexy shad crankbaits and the white spinnerbaits things like that. Where I fish does not have any baitfish should I still be using white baits and the sexy shad crankbaits and if not what should I be using? The only real "Baitfish" we have over here is sunfish.
Great video Tyler, I’ve been putting all this knowledge I’ve got from ur content to work and I’m actually catching more fish and bigger fish at that! Thanks for all ur tips
I prefer a higher gear ratio so that as I lose line, my inches per turn doesn't go down too much. Plus it's easier to slow down on a faster reel than it is to speed up on a slower reel.
Another great video Tyler! What a terrific content subject. I just haven’t seen it covered this well before. Thanks, it will help as I am currently upgrading gear. 😃👍🏼
I got back into fishing this year after a 26 year hiatus. Back in those days I went with a "high speed" Daiwa PT33P with a whopping 5.1:1 gear ratio. I felt that the PT33SH with its faster 7.1:1 gear ratio was too fast. This was put onto my flipping stick and it's still on there now. My other Daiwa baitcaster has a 5.1:1 gear ratio as well. I'm just a casual fisherman so having the higher speed retrieves isn't really necessary for me. Sure, it would save me time between casts to crank the bait back in for my next cast, but, I'm out fishing to relax and to forget about my otherwise boring daily routine. LOL! My cousin, who got me into fishing and hasn't stopped fishing, keeps telling me to update my old equipment but that gear worked back in the day and works well today after taking the old reels apart, cleaning them up, and applying fresh lubricants. If anything, I need to replace my old 5' 6" pistol grip handle baitcasting rod with something newer. Yes, it will still have that old 5.1:1 ratio Daiwa reel on it because it works for me.
High speed reels are also great for casting up river in fast current. You have to be able to catch up to the bait or you get no action and cant set the hook. I know most fishermen in the US are sitting in a bassboat on a lake but for those of us who like fishing moving water high speed is necessary.
Takahiro Omori uses a 10:1 for his 1.5 squarebills and I find that crazy. I was using a 7.1:1 today throwing them and even then didn’t like it as much as the 6.2:1 reel I’m used to for crankbaits
I use a backer line. I only put on about 6 yards farther than I can cast . It saves a boat load 😉 of money on line, and you have enough extra line to last till you replace. I fish damn near everyday and change line when it gets a memory
When your line is “spiraling” per se when you cast out and lay the line flat. This can be solved usually by hooking your lure on a tree and then walking backwards eventually stopping the spool and stretching your line
I just bought my first baitcast combo this year, quantum pulse, It was on sale at Bass Pro so I got it to try cause I always wanted to try one out. Still getting used to it.
I find the opposite to be true...its waaaay easier for me to slow down my higher gear ratio reels than it is to burn my lower 5 & 6 gear ratio reels...7-8 is my go to but that's just me
I agree GhostBox, burning a slower rario reel is extremely tiresome. What I use the higher ratio reels for are plain and simple. Ever have bass grab your bait and as you set the hook, that fish makes a fast break straight to the boat or bank?? I had a hard time taking up the slack with the slower ratio reels. Lost some monsters and that's when I bought a couple. Since then, I'm glad I did.

I'm super impatient so when TW was out of tranx 200 in any speed but 8.5 to 1 I dropped the hammer. It makes a 2lb bass feel like a teener pulling with this ratio. I wonder if I could even winch a 10lber in without stroking the rod up and down to pick up line and that can cause losing a fish. Now I'm stuck with it. I love 7.5 but if I had to lock one reel into my hands it'd be a 6.8 to 1 in case I needed to deep crank and it can cover everything else.
Here’s the TRUE thing. A lot of people don’t know how to use a high speed reel like this one. Now obviously it has its place just like any other gear ratio speed. The most effective technique for a 9 or 10 speed reel is buzzbaits and punching. It can be used for a lot more but those 2 are the main ones, hands down. When running a buzzbait the goal is to try to keep it on top of the water so with a high speed reel like this one you can calmly reel it in and even slow roll it and it will still stay on top with no problem vs with a 6 or 7 or even 8 speed reel, you actually have to try to keep it on top by reeling as fast as you can. Now when punching, most guys try to reel the fish in while the fish is pulling drag when using a 9 or 10 gear ratio and then they think it doesn’t have power so they drop down to a 7 speed reel. Which is why those people think that its “too fast”. The truth is, they don’t know how to use it. If you are going to punch heavy grass you cannot try to reel while the fish is pulling drag, you have to pull with your rod and then reel the slack in, and THAT is where the 9 or 10 speed reel is super beneficial. With a super high gear ratio, you only have to make 1 turn to reel all the slack in vs with a 7 or 6 speed you have to make 3 or 4. When you are punching, all the power comes from your ROD. Not your reel. Which is why I can’t stand the guys that say they don’t punch with a high speed reel because it doesn’t have “power”. The real reason they don’t is because they just simply don’t know how to use it.
Gears, you should have said tall and short. Spining reels are usually more consistant on reeling in, because the bale never changes in distance or size.
alright can you not just reel slower with a high gear ratio reel? I accidentally bought an xg metanium because the deal was too good and throw everything on it
Surprising those fish stayed buttoned up.You said you used the rod to horse them out of the tires then used the reel to gather up the slack line.We all know the last thing you want to do is give a fish slack line.action is related to how far the tip bends in relation to the rod.xtra fast, fast, moderate.power is more the strength of the rod in relation to the lure weight being used
What I meant by that, is that the line got less tight than it was when I was winching them out. I didn’t give them full slack, just less pressure so that I could use the full gear ratio without all of the tension from the fish
Anything over 7.5 is useless. Just a gimmick to sell reels. As Tyler says, it’s easy to speed up your retrieve. And the torque loss and gear wear on these high speed reels means your money is better spent on a quality midrange ratio reel.
