My mom's peonies didn't bloom too many last year, but this year there were at least 15 blooms. I gave the roots extra room, and took back the barrier by a few inches. I added strawberries to the base for root cover, and I added extra soil, all in the fall. I added leaves from the willow tree and it bloomed so beautifully, I gave some flowers away.
Taking the rose out and putting it in a separate container, don't throw it out. Wash it dish washing liquid, and add some egg shells and banana peel to the soil. Sometimes the area it grows is dry and depleted of nutrients. You soil might need some organic matter, the wood mulch is not allowing the soil to grow certain plants. You might need a small compost pile directly in the soil.

Thank you for this excellent advice!
Your mom's peonies sound beautiful. I think you're right - the roots need more space. I'm going to do remove quite a bit of the creeping phlox that's crowding the peony. Thank you!

That hosta in the pot is beautiful! I had an annual Salvia come back this year, too, which was nice.

Thanks - I got lucky with that hosta!
Ah, so you also have an annual salvia that overwintered. Were you surprised, too? At this point, I'm not going to remove any annuals in the fall - it's a money-saver when they make it through the winter. Gotta love zone 7!

Beautiful garden! Do you know the name of the blue hydrangea? It is stunning! It reminds me of my mom's old fashion hydrangea and unfortunately I did not get cuttings from it when she passed away. I would love to get my hands on one. 💙

Thank you so much, Faye! I wish I knew the name of the blue hydrangea. It was the only thing that was planted before I bought my house (I did a lot of work to create garden needs). I'm so sorry about your mom's passing away and that you didn't get a cutting from her beautiful hydrangea. All I can suggest is to keep your eyes open at garden centers and check some of the top plant catalogs (Bluestone Perennials and Whiteflower Farm are good ones).
