How to Laser Engrave Bigger than Your Laser Bed - NEJE 3 Max

- Got material you want to laser engrave bigger than your laser bed size? No problem, because in this video I show how to laser engrave wood using the pass-through method and an alternative alignment workaround.
Having a large work area to begin with is going to help and I'm using the NEJE 3 Max system with an engravable area of 810mm x 460mm, but in this video I print a world map on to plywood measuring 1220mm x 840mm without any modifications to the laser system. Lightburn is an excellent software to help with the laser engraving of oversized materials.
There has been previous work in this area worth your attention:

NEJE do have an extension kit which expands the physical size to 1030 x 810mm, but the pass through method can expand them further.

What's your favourite place on the whole earth?
Watched it twice, no idea x
@@Tinatortoise It's in South America!
ah, yes, Venezula... never been there, but heard it's got some interesting views
@@RayanthPantal I think you are the first to find the mistake! I have been blessed to have visited there before and as you say, interesting is a good word to use!
Great way to extend the work window of that machine. A number years ago I did that when I engraved some very large signs on my milling machine for our church. A nice straight edge and close measuring setting up the new X axis and it worked like a charm.
Great way to do it on these small lasers for sure.
Gary
Thanks Gary. The guides were definitely a great help for easy alignment although the disparate nature of the text was a bit of a cheat. Having a continuous image would be a challenge and something I hope to try. Ortur have sent me their rotary device so I've got a couple of challenges in mind for that. Just hope NEJE can send me their next generation laser module, more power, deeper wood cutting. All the best. Ray
@@RayWhitbyCreations lots of options with the rotary for sure. You are on your way to become the Laser King. I will be watching!
Take care,
Gary
What a neat way to do a map! That machine looks pretty awesome.
Thanks Ambrosia. Appreciate you watching and commenting. All the best. Ray
Hi Ray, I bought a small 10 watt optical power diode laser engraver. No plans to do anything at that scale, but that's pretty awesome! I've made a few large wood globes years ago, and while I had one at an art show I had a few WWII Veterans mention the lack of a few tiny islands in the Pacific that were too small to even show up at that scale. They would've been comparable to the point of a needle in physical size, but I will make it a point to show them when I make another one in the future. If you ever make a world map showing land masses you'll be cussing at how many islands there are lol. Cheers!
Hey Steve, The decision to not include some of the smaller islands was hard, but as you say they would be unreadable. I guess with a long enough board one could have a magnified area for a cluster, but the whole thing would be cumbersome. Definitely need a more powerful and reliably quicker laser for this work!
im just now learning about laser engraving and will be ordering my first one in a couple weeks a 10w diode laser as well awesome video love how calming your voice is i got so many questions on this hobby lol great video
Great to hear! I've had a lot of fun, but really need a few extra gadgets for it! Hope you have a lot of success with it
Amazing! As always!
Thank you Annette!
Hi Ray. I wouldn’t even attempt to do half of what you do 50% of the time, however I have just returned from a couple of days in Harrogate culminating in the woodworking show and can recommend a visit. Great video and I can’t see a spelling mistake. Keep up the good work 🌞
Thanks Ray. If I could find the time I would love to go along to a woodturning exhibition. I did have an experienced woodturner come into the charity one day. 40 years of turning and selling them. He said my work was nice and he should be able to get £10 maybe £15 for some of my best pieces. I told him that I had just sold 1 piece for £150 for the charity. It went to someone in Germany. I guess what would really concern me is that an experienced woodturner has a critical eye for things I may not be seeing.
Check out South America...
Before watching any of it: I see your blue Whippet! We too have a blue Whippet! He is just over a year now. ❤
Wow! Fantastic! I've always thought Whippets were the best breed (greyhounds, Italian Greyhounds too) and blues the best of the best. My Blue is now 4 and still behaving like a puppy. My wife has a little learning to do as she is not impressed with Blue at bed time; he sleeps on my feet and of course always trying to get under the duvet!
Great video, love your humour. My workshops tiny too! I’ve just purchased a xtool D1 20w laser because I want to make large (1metre) wall sized mandalas and have been mulling over how to align it exactly if I cut it in two identical symmetrical halves. Thanks for giving me some ideas.
Most beautiful place is to my mind probably Antarctica.
Cute dog, we have an Iggy!
I totally love Iggys! But I heard they can have brittle bones and not great with a young family. We are besotted with our whippet! Thanks for your feedback Michael. Happy burning!
Very clever jig! Nice work- I think it turned out great! I'm working with a 900x900mm bed but I don't have space to feed through since it has to sit in a corner- so it's kind of a trade off. Either way, it's just a 10 watt laser so until I'm up to a 20+ or a CO2 I probably won't utilize the whole area- still nice though.
Prettiest place on Earth that I've seen in Person has to be the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The view from Pike's Peak was just plain epic in all directions- I felt like I was drunk after driving up to the top, I think I was focusing on the road, then once I got out I can see for Hundreds of Miles in all directions- kinda messed with my head a bit!
Could you mount the laser base and the board to a pivot on some casters like mobile whiteboards so when you’ve finished, it can be rotated? When in use, maybe rest on other surfaces or some foldable legs?
Might even be able to mount an air filter and storage for the cover on it? :)
Hi Richard. I was wondering about mounting the frame of the laser on a mobile device (casters?!) so that one could engrave a full sheet of ply by moving the entire frame in sections and use targets in the margin for alignment. But I need a faster laser for that project. Thankfully the laser system is lightweight and I probably wont be doing too many large sized projects. I think storing it vertically may be the way to go. Thanks for the suggestions!
I did enjoy the tiling demonstration. What air pump do you use for your air assist? Also would a shower exhaust fan be too strong for the venting system? I have the NEJE 3 Max with the 40640 head unit just have not set it up yet.
For the air assist I had a 40l compressor, but I do resin casting so having something versatile was useful. I use a dedicated extractor fan slightly more powerful than a shower exhaust fan, but could do with something a little more powerful than that. But it gets really noisy too. Happy lasering!
Will you be creating a jig to laser engrave turned bowls all around the surface etc eg wedding goblets with two wedding rings on stem and bride and grooms names in a fancy script
Even better, Ortur have sent me something to try which will be great for woodturning. 2 problems though. First, there's too many other projects I need to get finished before I can play. Second, it'll only do up to 110mm diameter cylinders. So looks like I may have to come up a jig or 2!
@@RayWhitbyCreations Your a busy busy wood artist you will get time one day I am sure
I agree with your dog , it is Mexico.
what would I engrave onto a plywood sheet? Eh a few words here and there to test something out and see what would happen, maybe make it into a star shape, yeah that'd be pretty fun.
Sounds like a start!
what parameter does u use? I just find out u make a world map, great idea!
This is for the NEJE E40, 4000 mm/min and 60% power. Threshold print and no air assist. For 120cm x 80cm it took around 12 hours.
@@RayWhitbyCreations pretty good
liam neeson is that you !
If only!
What a lovely bit of Kit I assume your in your home workshop so many possibilities for lasered products to raise money chess boards pub menu boards, Ouija boards . house names etc etc etc I would engrave A hoarse on Hind legs. Place to visit Ireland’s Mysterious “Wormhole of Inishmore” place I love is Whitby. The family dog likes Bark shire
Bark-shire!!! Love it Michael. I think after seeing so many products on Etsy with laser engraving, I wonder if a diode laser system could really turn a profit (it's quite slow), but then perhaps it's down to doing something unique and needing a creative imagination!
Is there a name for this type of map? A little person I work with's special interest is maps and flags. I am sure they'd like to see one x
Hi Tina. I think they could be called typographic maps...
@@RayWhitbyCreations Thank you but no. I asked Google 'world map made of countries names' and some came up. Sorry to bother you, I was just excited to find something different my little person might enjoy xxx
The map was a big hit x
@@TinatortoiseHi Tina. I searched ' "typographic" text world map ' and many came up, but it does think I was searching for "topographic" maps, so I enforced the search term
Have you seen this ua-cam.com/video/Jzaqx5SYvWA/v-deo.html and have you ever created any cups with turned handles
Hi Michael. I had not seen the project. I had turned a cup but not with a turned handle: ua-cam.com/video/olHdW7vvi1o/v-deo.html. I might go back and redo it one day!
To solve the problems with your USB port you should have *ahem* mapped a drive. 🤭
Thanks Andy, I've turned the sleep option off for the USB ports and also got a PC that doesn't spontaneously freeze, which seems to have resolved the problem.
Although some people may believe that Australia has the highest rate of people with dyslexia, the fact is that you will find it more in places of high poverty, with ineffective schools 😉
Hi Margaret. May I ask, what was the question for this response? I think I am missing something here!
@@RayWhitbyCreations Australia was spelled wrong. Like a dyslexic might have done
@@margaretzuelke9761 I've checked but Australia was spelt correctly... isn't it?!? I am tired and not seeing this!
@@RayWhitbyCreations my bad. My eyes must have been playing tricks on me because I swear when I first looked at it it was spelled Austraila. Maybe I'm dyslexic?
