On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

As a crusty, old M1 tanker, I've seen A-10s do some mind blowing tight maneuvers. You might be faster but good luck getting inside their circle. Great video.

Great job flying the A-10. Can't say I'm impressed with the other pilot. Against a slower aircraft, he wasn't using the Harrier's assets all that well and felt like he was just struggling to fly at slower speeds (and kept getting outmaneuvered).
You just described what it's like every time anyone dogfights in a Harrier. They just don't move well.
Harriers do not like being slow at all so in this fight you just have to hope you can manage your speed and the opponent makes a mistake. A 10 is inherently slow so it wasn't an easy fight for the av8b at all
The guy wasn’t even flaring in obvious aim 9 WEZ situations…. Pretty disappointing overall

I'm quite sure at the start of the of rate fight in the first round the A10 was well within fox 2 parameters. The harrier just refused to fire.
People forget that maneuverability is a very valuable trait in an aircraft designed for CAS ;)
Don't forget the Harrier is king of maneuverability when it comes to aircraft.
Seeing the A-10 win the 2 circle was so strange to see.
It was like watching an episode of Colombo where he sounds like he has no idea what's going on and the criminal is smug but then he starts getting closer and closer to the facts and the guy starts realizing there might be a problem lol.

That gun has more thrust than one of those engines.
@@Jonathan-yu9ui The original Harriers have 2 ADEN which are 30mm. Comparable guns are the DEFAs and 20mm M39 as well as the BK27. All more or less based on the MG 213. The GAU-12 of the AV-8B is literally based on the GAU-8, just made smaller to fit the Harrier and the AC-130 gunships and so its caliber is "just" 25mm as well.
The beeping in the A-10 is supposedly to tell the pilot what kind of turn he's pulling.
A consistent tone meaning: you're pulling the stick for an optimal turn-rate; a fast beeping meaning: you're pulling AoA past the optimal turn-rate.
"...his nozzle wasn't in the right location." That's when you turn on the map light and take a good look, gentlemen! Lol.

Please do a simulation of pushing into enemy territory and how you would deal with threats like random soldiers with MANPAD systems. Would love to see how you deal with those types of threats while also dealing with enemy planes.
The main way to deal with MANPADS is just to fly at like 10,000 feet and above, as any further than that MANPADS won’t be able to do much

We lost a few A-10's to MANPADS in the Gulf Wars, a few more were hit but managed to fly back to base.
I think the trick would be what the target or mission would be. A specific stationary or predictable target you could hit with smart munitions (bridge, airfield, SAM or radar installation, etc.) could be killed at relatively long stand-off ranges and altitudes that MANPADs just can't reach. SAMs and enemy fighters are the threat there. CAS with called in targets generally requires more generalized weapons and low-and-slow flying that is more susceptible to MANPADs.

It's also the Harrier's engine RPM that limits the gun firing - as the engine provides bleed air to make the guns work. So in the slow scissors he likely couldn't fire the guns when he got the nose on you.
Interesting that they'd use bleed air to power the gun. I wonder if it can still fire at a reduced rate.
Today I learned...
TMS Up in AA mode will set your Aim-9 seeker spinning around your boresight and it'll leash to any heat signature it crosses over. Makes it much more reliable at catching things that briefly cross your nose.
@GS Maybe try that fight with the Harrier again with a real former Harrier pilot, ex RAF or Royal Navy. They had the best success with the Harrier unlike the USMC who lost 45 pilots in 30 years to non combat accidents flying the Harrier.
I know of a hog driver who has actually trained BFM in this scenario. "It's like the two kids who can't fight but each have their own tricks going at it" lol
The A-10 is pretty much a sentry turret with that turn rate. If you find yourself within FOX-2 range of an A-10 then that means you done goofed.
Please do an A10 vs F22 dogfight. If he can do it in RL then you can do it in DCS.

Good video! This kinda reminds me of a great scene in the Area 88 OVA where a strike package including an A-10 gets jumped by some Harrier-As. That hog was loaded with UGBs and was running for his life until backup arrived.
Loaded hog is significantly sloughier than with pure AA load out.

I was stood under a harrier Gr7a dogfight a german mig 29 over an raf base. Germsn pilot came back in sheepish, it didn't go well for him
Great video as always. gotta say I really appreciate your work. Though if I'm being honest I have to say I was rooting for the harrier here. This was a challenging fight from both sides and really well done to each.
The spanish version of the Harrier (i know, is not the DCS one) has the option to carry Aim120s as well. So it is much more powerfull.
AV-8B+ not just having AIM-120B support, but next year 2023 it receives update to use AIM-120D, AIM-9X II and JHMCS.
A fight that has no business happening but still entertaining nonetheless.

If two A10s get into a potential dogfight with other superior aircraft, don't they train to fly in a two circle so each a10 always has the others 6. That way if a enemy fighter tries to slot in on the others 6, they have their wingman already there.
It’s called circling the hogs or a wagon wheel.

@@syntex3664 There's scary new small arms ammunition which can be guided by a laser. It doesn't manuever much,, but imagine that big gun with laser guided bullets able to adjust up to 10° off boresight. The gun's effect would kill anything within a 20° cone in front of the nose. Every one of the AV-8's passes in front would have been certain kills.

The Soviets made a 30mm gun that would shake apart the airframe of whatever vehicle it's mounted on.
That's why you don't make a supersonic jet with a 30mm Gatling gun.

This is one of those matches I would have loved to see you switch planes with your opponent. That way we could see if it is the pilot or the plane. I seriously believe it is the pilot here. I just think GS has the knowledge and experience here to take advantage of a less skilled pilot. I truly believe GS would have won in the harrier.

As strange as it sounds the two I'd like to see versus the A-10 are the A-4 Skyhawk, and the A-7 Corsair II.
02:10 moment he has nozzles fully aft, but then others reasons are:
1) Engine RPM under ~60-80% (depends from air temperature and altitude how much pressure gun can get) as he is trying to slow down.
2) Didn't react in time.
3) Master Arm off.
4) No gun selected.
Odd the harrier never used his fox 2s, while viffing, since the nozzles only restrict guns, not missiles. He had a couple of good opportunities
He also didn’t flare, and handled the plane exceptionally poorly
Another thing about the harrier's gun, you have to have the RPM up high enough, I think it's above 68%, in order for it to have enough bleed air to fire/operate
Harriers are some of my favorite planes so I am sad it didn't even get one win, but it isn't surprising they aren't exactly made to dog fight. Though I suppose the A-10 isn't either, its just the characteristics that make it good at it's intended role also happen to make it surprisingly good in dog fights.

GS, have you ever tried differential thrust with the Warthog. Worked with the Tomcat in specific situations. Might help the Hog for extreme maneuverability; one take 'save my asp' situations. Would love to watch a video of you experimenting, whether successful or not.

Impressive when you consider that an A10 is nearly as big as a B25, and about 2 tons heavier. The A10 is a big airplane, especially when you’re standing right next to it.

Hey GS, I noticed you don't use seam mode. Not sure if you ever tried it but I believe if you press TMS Forward it will go into seam mode and allow you to lock on and have the IR seeker use its gimbal to stay on the target and wait for the right opportunity to fire. Plus you can use it to lead

BTW, you mentioned that the Harrier cannot fire its guns when the nozzles are at 45 degrees. Can it fire the Sidewinders no matter the nozzle placement or are there restrictions to missiles as well?

I wouldn’t mess with the Harrier’s nozzles and attempt a low speed fight with an A-10. More than likely they’d stay pegged at mil and I’d use the vertical a lot. Seems like the best bet would be to use the superior thrust to weight and use the vertical, just like pretty much every normal fighter would do against the A10.
Props to the Harrier pilot, he had the more disabling disadvantages in his jet and the weapons situation yet survived as long as he did. Well done
You can slew the seeker head on those heaters. Once you place it and get tone it will track within its parameters

I don't know if anyone has asked this ? But how about the the A10 against a McDonald's Douglas A1 sky raider. A skyrader actually shot down a MIG during the Vietnam conflict and the a-10 was built to replace the sky raider I think that would be a good video to see. Love your videos bro

I'm curious what the story is behind the A-10 with F-22 and F-16 training kills. Are these surprises in dogfights? Ground kills? Air-to-air collisions in simulators?
At low levels, the big straight wings gives you a turn rate that even viper and hornet jockies don't like. At high altitude no match for either unless in the hands of an experienced pilot.
The A-10 will always be my favorite fighter. I know all the speed and tech is nice. There is something to be said about, flying a tank.

I think the problem with some of these matchups might be a gap in driver acumen and expertise. LOL. GS is just really good across most platforms. I'd like to see a roll reversal of this fight and see if the results are the same with GS in the Harrier and Opponent in A-10. I'm betting on GS.

Not being able to fire while using the thrust ducts decided this. The harrier lacks standard flight maneuverability due to its stubby wings, which are a weight savings for VTOL.

I've noticed you doing boresight fox two, but I tend to uncage it with TMS-up short to give it a bit better acquisition and tracking prior to launch. I'm curious why you don't use that.

GS really just shows a good pilot can make anything work if you play its strengths, just play what you like and get good at it. Of course that doesn't always apply between technological gaps ;)
Due to the size of the decels and the other flight controls at the slow speed it does amazing in a merging dogfight.
