  • Land Before Time V Made Me So Mad - TLBT 5 The Mysterious Island. The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island, is a 1997 direct-to-video animated adventure musical film. This is the first film in the series directed by Grosvenor, as well as the first in which Anndi McAfee, Aria Noelle Curzon, and Miriam Flynn play Cera, Ducky, and Grandma Longneck, respectively. It is also the only picture in which Brandon LaCroix portrays Littlefoot, as well as the first in which Thomas Dekker supplies Littlefoot's singing voice. Michele Brourman and Amanda McBroom wrote three songs for the film, with Michael Tavera composing the soundtrack.
    This is my review ft Don's Life. He is HILARIOUS lol

    Dumb fact that I learned from the Land Before Time. The Great Valley literally has more openings where Sharpteeth can get in through. Like one Sharptooth laid their eggs very close to an underground entrance to the valley. Another is guarded by just fruit that deters them away but Littlefoot and his friends eat them so Sharpteeth literally just walked into the Great Valley.

    • @cintronproductions9430
      @cintronproductions9430 2 роки тому +47

      You know, now that I'm older I realize that Sharpteeth getting into the valley and killing things would actually be a good thing. These are kids movies so it's not adressed, but realistically, since the Great Valley has no predators, eventually, all the herbivores will eat all the food and then they won't have any left, especially because they keep laying eggs, which means more mouths to feed, and also there's several sauropods in the valley and, like modern elephants, they would probably consume large amounts of food every day to fuel their massive bodies. So yeah, the herbivores will eventually eat all the plants and then they'll slowly starve to death, which is more painful than quickly getting neck-snapped by a Sharptooth. Predators in the Great Valley would be good for the ecosystem because they'd keep the herbivore populations in check so they don't overpopulate and consume every last piece of greenery.

    The amount of forced childhood idiocy in the characters to make the plot holes even remotely plausible is stark in hindsight. Petri got hit the most because flight kills so many physical obstacles in a story.

    • @blitzer9981
      @blitzer9981 2 роки тому +29

      So true, these kids can be dummer than dodos at times. Plus, there was a much easier way of keeping Petrie from alerting the adults than playing the scared idiot card. There is a large (relatively to Petrie and Ducky anyway) predatory Pterosaur on the island that picks up Ducky later in the movie in an attempt to feed its children. Just put in a short scene of Petrie trying to fly over to the adults, only for a shadow to fall across him as he flies. He looks up only to almost get dive-bombed by pterosaur, which then begins to chase him and he, because he’s still closer to the island than to land, books it back to his friends and uses them as cover. Ducky and Petrie are perfect snacks, but Littlefoot, Soike and Cera are too big to fly away with or kill easily, so it backs off.
      There, a perfectly excusable reason for not risking another solo flight while that thing is patrolling the island. And it would be an awesome call back for when Ducky gets picked up by it after she falls off the cliff. But no, instead we’ll let Petrie be a moron and call it a day 🤦‍♂️
      (Edit) and plus it gives a good reason for Petrie to stay on the bloody raft, because he’s scared the pterosaur would see him flying up from the raft, or maybe have the bird follow them from the sky and half Petrie stick close to the others, and have Ducky try swimming or something and that’s when you see the shark.

      @@blitzer9981 I feel like the entire franchise could get a fanfic redo and be twice again as good. They depict the gang as idiots to fill a plot point and- sure, they're still kids. They still don't understand everything about life, especially social interaction and how speciesist everyone is.
      That said, they survived the bloody mysterious beyond, without a single adult, and killed a sharptooth. In the first movie alone.
      You might need to fiddle around to resolve some idiot balls, maybe even dramatically diverge in places but a lot of the underlying problems that instigate the stories would probably stay unchanged. the swarming leaf gobblers, the egg snatchers trying to steal ducky's unborn sibling, the earthquake that damns up the waters and dries out the valley leading to a massive forest fire...
      It'd be interesting to see the series rewritten from the angle of "child survivalists that are unintentionally badass and their peers don't interact with them because they're intimidated and/or racist."

    • @blitzer9981
      @blitzer9981 2 роки тому +5

      @@johnj.spurgin7037 I’d honestly pay anything to have that written, even if it did diverge a bit, those are my favourite kinds of fanfics where everything changes because one thing gets changed.
      But yeah, you could really do the same movies but have the same instigating events without them being morons.
      For an example, take the second movie Sinking Sand scene: considering the main cause for idiocy here is that the kids want more respect from their elders while their parents are just acting like parents so they look idiotic in comparison, change it so the kids are a bit more justified. Have the parents constantly calling them back for check ins, or telling them to not go too far from home even when they remind them they survived alone before. Eventually the kids manage to convince their folks to allow them to do some exploring together, because they haven’t been able to see the valley much due to the coddling. The parents reluctantly agree, but give a lot of stipulations and restrictions that clearly grate on their nerves.
      Enter the Sheltering Grass and Sinking Sand. So the kids HAVE NOT been here before, because the parents have been keeping them so close, so it’s a new experience for all of them. Now, instead of being dumb and jumping in like Lemmings, they realise this is like the Tar Pit from the first movie and think of a clever way to get across and play for a bit. However, something unforeseen happens (maybe Cera is trying to show off and slips off the bridge they make or whatever) and one or more of them get stuck. They do the SMART thing and send Petrie to get the adults as instructed in their restrictions. In the few minutes that it takes for Petrie to find them, the kids remember how they got out of the tar pit in the first movie and do that (whatever it was, considering we don’t get to see it), and they actually manage to get out in their own, which strokes their ego a bit and they’re expecting their folks to be proud of them.
      But nope. The adults arrive, see the kids covered in sinking sand slime and freak out, because as far as they are concerned, they could’ve just lost their kids without even realising it, in a supposed paradise no less! The kids try to explain what happened but the adults refuse to listen and take them home, probably grounding them. This lack of dialogue is what compels the kids to later make even more rash decisions, because the parents aren’t explaining why they’re freaking out. Perhaps have Littlefoot’s grandparents be reasonable which helps Littlefoot later realise why the adults are so terrified of losing them, but all the others are seriously freaked out and impose more restrictions, refusing to explain because they’re the adults so they know better, which then causes the kids to rebel even harder and not seek help from them later, because they believe they’ll be scolded no matter how safe they play it.
      I think that would be a much more in character line of reasoning for the kids not asking for the adults help later in the movie. And it (hopefully) adds some depth to the whole “being a parent is harder than it looks” message they have going by having both kids and adults learning something from the matter, and having both parties making mistakes.
      But that’s all just my take on it. There’s lots of other things I’d change in the movie but this is a long message already. You don’t need characters to be dumbed down just to progress the plot, there are plenty of ways to do so without bonking them with the idiot stick.

    As an actual Autistic; naw Petrie isn't Autistic, he's just badly written as a character overall. The series generally treats him as the gag/joke character, with little regard or consideration on how it leaves logic plotholes along the way.
    It's kind of ironic how Petrie was bold/brave enough to fight/harrass The Sharptooth 1 v 1 in the first movie, yet all other movies after that he's pinned as the coward of the group and is just about too chicken to do even basic things at times.

    Glad to see another speed painting and you are definitely right about Petrie being even more useless than usual especially during circumstances where he is most suited for a particular task
    Anyway here's the first part of my hot takes
    1. The kids are fighting over food like it's the purge
    2. As you pointed out the adults being frightened by the prospect of leaving the great valley even though they have survived there for years before they became parents and also as a mixed herd they have an even better chance at fighting predators
    3. The locust swarm didn't drink all the fresh water so instead of wandering the desert why wouldn't follow the river so they could at least satisfy one of their needs and it would be easier to find food next to fresh water
    4. Also why the hell did the dinosaurs choose to wander the desert I refuse to believe that Topsy thought it was a good idea maybe they took a vote and most of them are idiots we've seen plenty of evidence prior
    5. No insects were ever that large during the Mesozoic seriously learn about insect physiology and you'll see why this is impossible
    6. Did no one think that they should have a night watch especially since Ducky's mom was such a shrieking violet, also maybe your kids wouldn't run into the wilderness if you would actually supervise them just another benefit of having a night watch

      Is very strange that in the middle of the Wilderness that nobody would be keeping watch, especially since their kids always wander off but maybe we can make the excuse that everyone was thirsty and hungry and tired and they all just passed out. But yes your point about following the water would have been the smartest thing to do. 😅

    The thing about Petire, is he is a consistent parrot.
    If you pay attention to him throughout the movies, he parrots. Every time he sounds brave or confident, he is mimicking either Cera, or Ducky.
    In this movie, when he says "I a flyer, I just fly across." He was parroting Ducky talking about being able to swim across because she's a swimmer.
    He would not be alone, and so felt brave, also he saw the land bridge and knew they others could come too.
    And both Petire and Ducky kept to the land bridge as well, despite their big talk of swimming through and flying over the big water.
    So when they get stuck on the island, and the others tell him to fly across and tell the adults, Petire is understandably scared. He only dose things when in a group. Go back and rewatch the movies and pay attention to Petire, he never acts alone, only within a group. Unless Ducky is in immediate danger. And even then he fumbles it.
    I have seen people say they should have crippled Petire so he could not fly.
    But Petire already has a handicap. He can not function on his own. And the idea of doing so slaps him with crippling fear.
    As someone who has always been very attached to my family, and rarely ventured out on my own. (And the few times I did were disasters. Like the time I got lost in the woods behind our house when I was like 5. )
    I can relate to Petire. We both need to gain some independence, and some self-confidence.
    But his being to scare to fly out on his own without anybody else with him, is not completely his fault. He is just a kid, and he is not use to ding things on his own like that.
    And people talk big, and say they would do it if it was them, but like Cera, it is mostly big talk, and most people would be like Petire. Scare of doing the unknown.

    • @Alteori
      @Alteori  2 роки тому +2

      That's a very interesting perspective and I have noticed that to some degree. However it's kind of messed up that when ducky is in direct Danger he's willing to help her but when the others are in danger he doesn't seem to care enough to make that sacrifice.
      I can understand his shyness but as someone who will, and has, directly put herself in danger for her friends or family, and seeing that little foot and every other one of the group members has done it, it makes me not like him.
      He comes off as selfish and maybe that's not totally his fault because I know he was written that way to give some dynamic because there's always a cowardly friend in the group, but it sure is annoying for someone who has the ability to fly.
      😃😃 Have you noticed that in every cartoon or movie that has a group of kids there's always one person who is ridiculously cowardice? I mean to the point where it's so annoying? It was Chuckie Finster in Rugrats, it's Ben in Camp Cretaceous, It's Lex in Jurassic Park.
      I think they do that to make the characters relatable to Young audiences but making them so over-the-top kind of takes away the relatability to me because one of my friends are in danger, that shyness goes away.
      Also maybe if they had down the animation differently like ok hear me out:
      Maybe they hear the Roar of the T-Rex ahead of time and they have to be a little quieter. They wonder what they're going to do and then littlefoot comes up with the idea
      LITTLEFOOT: Petrie, you can fly across
      DUCKY: Oh yes yes yes
      PETRIE: That right! Petrie fly across! Me get help! Me get grown ups!
      CERA: Please hurry
      Petrie goes to the edge of the cliff and puffs out his chest ready to fly, but he pauses, looking over at the vast water and then that weird camera zoom tilt thing happens it feels like the walls are closing down around him and you hear his heart beating or at least you see the animation of a close up to his eyes because of anxiety takes over him and he faints.
      The others asked him what's wrong and no matter how much he tries he feels crippled with anxiety. It still wouldn't have made sense because Petrie and his mother and siblings have flown above dangerous situations before. If not he would not still be alive.
      But at least it would have made him more relatable somewhat.
      I mean this is the same Petrie who flew into a T-Rex's eye and pulled at its lashes to help his friends kill it when he JUST learned to fly 😄😄

    • @Cattensu
      @Cattensu 2 роки тому +1

      @@Alteori Adrenaline is a thing. And a thing I think plays a big factor in the few instances where Petire acts in a daring way.
      As for him flying with his family over dangerous areas. That supports my point, he would be in a group flying with his family in those situations, so feeling braver due to that. Again he pretty much never acts on his own.
      In the original movie he was to scared to come out of the tree Littlefoot and Ducky found him in.
      And he was rather on edge and difficult for the first little bit after he joined them.
      The sequels are inconsistent with all the characters at times with perhaps the exception of Spike.
      And Petire's flying ability is wildly inconsistent, but I am of the opinion that he is a rather weak flayer, or doesn't have much confidence in his flying ability.
      Either way, the writing could be tighter in these movies. But I don't think they had much time for drafts and rewrites, since these movies came out pretty much every year in the 90's.
      So they can be a lot better, but they could also be way worse.
      As for the cowardly characters. I have never really had an issue with them.
      As the song from the previous movie puts it. It takes all sorts.
      I don't think Lex from Jurassic Park counts as a coward.
      She is a girl that based on what her brother says spends most of her time in her room on the computer.
      And I know from having friends that did not grow up with animals, or spent much time outside. They are either nervous but interested, or terrified of any animal larger then a kitten.
      Lex was a little nervous, but doing alright until the T.rex attack.
      She managed to survive the attack by having to replile down a cliff on the back of basically a stranger at this point. Likely believes her brother is dead, so add that to the terror she most have been feeling. So I can get her being scared of the brachiosaurus, she has coded all dinosaurs with the same color as the T.rex. Just like a kid that got bit by a dog, and so hates dogs.
      But the next morning she is willing to understand that not all dinosaurs are the same.
      The rest of the movie she is brave. And handles everything pretty well I think.
      I mean yeah, she has a bit of a fit when her brother gets electrocuted, but who wouldn't.
      As for the other characters you mentioned. I have no experience with them, so I can not agree with you, nor argue on behalf of them depending on my view of them.

    The 5th Land before time is one of my favorites because it’s the first time they leave The Great Valley, Littlefoot’s Grandparents show how much they Love and care about him since his mother died, Littlefoot references his Mother in “Always There” and the 5 of them reunite with Chomper!🦕🦖

    The neck thing in Land Before Time films specifically look more like camera angles and not stretching beyond their limits. Like the grandpa looks like he's going higher because we're seeing it from the kids' angle. Same can be said in 2, when he's lifts Littlefoot and his head moves towards the camera and then away. That's how my brain rationalized it as a kid and still does as an adult.

    Grandpa: There's plenty of food in the valley!
    Locusts: Immediately come to eat everything.

    What's the software you're using? I've been trying to get into digital art, and the one you're using looks like it will suit me well in starting up.
    Edit: So I know it's photoshop, what's the brand selling it? The goal is to find something where I can make good line-art, which I seem to have trouble with for some reason.

    To be fair to Petrie, even if he flew over, what could he do to get the others back? Beside perhaps Ducky, neither he nor his mother could carry over the larger kids. Maybe if they get ahold of that big flyer from the seventh movie, but otherwise, Petrie flying over really doesn't help much.
    Besides, they had another problem. Even if the tide would go down in a few days, the adults couldn't linger there that long without food and water.
    I agree that, in and of itself, Petrie refusing to fly over is a pretty lame plot device. Still, even if he had, it wouldn't have helped much.

      Another thing is, I'm not sure the kids saw the adults there. Petrie would have to go looking for them, him assuming they weren't there, and that could risk him getting lost out there alone and starving and never coming back to the kids.
