I got a chance to drive this exact car (I met Jeff at the track as the fellow RX-8 owner), and it is an excellent package. It's something that I intend to build after I get sick of the rotary issues. While the shifter isn't as slick as the factory trans, that's the only real gripe with the whole car. Other than that, the power is excellent and the chassis feels very similar overall. I both want to let the world know that this exists because it is spectacular, and I also want to keep it a secret. Andrew is a very generous guy with his time, and I'm concerned that if his company expands to needing more people, he won't be able to support his customers in the way that he wants to. Overall, if you are going to spend 20k-ish on a dual-duty track/street car, I don't think there is a better car out there.
Thanks for the kind words, Thomas! As demand has increased over the years, the wait times may be longer (and continue to increase), but I have full intention on keeping the in house builds and DIY kits as a personal as possible. Relations with clients, like the one I built with Jeff, have more value in my eyes than expanding a business to the point when I can no longer offer that form of experience.
I just picked up a LFX swapped RX-8 from Keisler Automation last week. Randy is not exaggerating when he says this is one of the best chassis of all time. The LFX V6 is exactly what the RX-8 needed. The car remains balanced, has great low end torque and still keeps a decently high red line. They have a great website that shows the specs of the RX-8 chassis and other benefits of the LFX swap compared to 911, Corvette, 350z and other cars from the same era as the RX-8. Keisler also has bespoke suspension upgrades and other stuff for RX-8 and Miata on the site. Andrew was a pleasure to work with, was responsive to questions and went above and beyond to get the swap completed through the pandemic and supply chain slowdowns. I really can't say enough good things about Andrew Keisler and the work that Keisler Automation does. I hope this doesn't sound like an ad for the shop, I'm just a happy customer that likes to give credit where its due.
The NC Miata was a shrunk RX-8 chassis. Ford didn’t want Mazda to have 2 bespoke sports car chassis, so Mazda made due because they made the RX first. @savagegeese did a great documentary with people from the Miata teams.
I have a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata in my garage, my daily driver for 15 years. I initially thought about LS-swapping it, but it's a lot of motor and a tiny 10 gal gas tank. Honestly one of these GM V6 motors would be a way better fit.
@@TheDonCucaracho Dude those engines are underpowered and don’t have much support. The j series is fwd based. What’s so wrong about swapping in an American engine?
I'm the original owner and glad to see this being used for what it was intended to be used for (a practical daily-driven race car). The original engine was a Renesis modified with rotors machined to fit RC-7 FD apex seals and had a Lysholm Twin-screw supercharger pulleyed at 14-15 psi of boost. It was making around 330 rwhp. I can't say it was a reliable setup, as I only had maybe 13K miles with it before it became a garage queen that I'd fire up periodically, but this certainly looks like it will be reliable long-term and probably easier on the wallet from a fuel consumption perspective. A very awesome ride. Check my channel for some old dyno videos and some autocross events with this same car.
Of all the stupid swaps people do on RX-8s, this one actually makes the most sense. But I would still stick with the rotary myself. I would swap to the REW from the Renesis though. I've been hooked since my first RX3 back in 1985. If done up properly, it will blow the doors off that V6. But you do lose streetability. But for racing, not much can touch a wankel.
I have actually had one of these kits on a silver RX8 and it was also done by Kiesler and we ended up getting some stuff sorted out and this looks just like the white RX8 that left my shop not too long ago. I actually love how these swaps run and it feels quick. They dont sound very good with those single exit manifolds, but they run like hell!
3.6 liters of exhaust through a 1.3 liter muffler. Although the stock muffler probably flows more because of the rotary’s high RPM. Who knows? Not a fan of the exhaust note, though.
Nice car. I am not a fan of removing the rotary engines from rotary cars but I really understand why he did. Randy please make a video of you driving on the track. Brap on Randy.
Really hope to see this swap or another get some traction. Lot of wonderful RX-8 chassis sitting around waiting for an engine. I own an NC, people all the time ask if it has the rotary, I always answer "no, thank God!"
The thing about these motors is theyll eat the timing chain at around 100k miles, but tbh builds like this probably dont rack up that much use, so I bet this is a sweet ride!
A big thank you Randy for showing us this mazar RX8 I didn't know they made the swap kit and the GM V6 has a decent aftermark following 400 horsepower what's some upgrades?
Realistically speaking you're not getting 400 whp out of this car. At the very top end you can push it to ~350, this type of build is my exact plan in the future
V6 RX-8 has been on my list, for a few years. Other Mx-5 V6 swaps: Rocketeer does a Ford 3.0 Duratec (Jag AJ30 version) and CrapEngineering does a Honda V6
An LV3 could've possibly been even better. Lower CG, potentially less weight, and more potential power if you build it like David Vizard would. That platform can get at least 400whp on stock displacement, especially being manual, and I reckon it could push 450whp if you give it the same bore as its LT1 big brother in addition to a David Vizard spec cam and head work. 400-450whp in an engine that weighs around 350lbs or less is killer. After that all you'd need to make it sound insane are equal-length stepped headers, and an equal-length stepped Y pipe dual 2.5" into a single 3.5" back to the axle, where you can then split it back into dual 2.5 for the exits and tips setup. Should scream almost like a Stratos with a 6-into-1 header. Or like Boosted Boiz "Razzle Dazzle" turbo J35 sandrail.

He never looked at the ATS 3.6? That's the car I went with, and it's great. Much bigger back seats than the 6th-gen Camaro, 3400 lbs, and a bit of luxury. And they're really cheap. Cheaper than 6th gen Camaros. Their only weaknesses are the differential failure rate and a transmission that's sometimes clunky changing gears (the 8-speed autos have reliability issues, though).
