  • Marni with Francesco Risso has come into a new era for the brand and the company, one that keeps brand consistency while adding in a new element of expressive creativity. This brings in an inclusive feeling that's quite unlike any other big name luxury brand, which is so exciting to see. Cannot wait to see how Marni evolves under Risso.

    Omg! Yes! I never knew this (I’m not in the industry as a profession I’m more of a consumer so my knowledge is rather limited) but yes that is probably the reason why I’ve been buying Marni these past few seasons! There would be the smallest details that have these child-like qualities to them. For example, I recently just bought a very plain simple short sleeves white shirt with that classic Marni bowling cut. But on the pocket chest there is a stitching in pastel pink that spells Marni with a childrens handwriting kind of font. I feel his designs have these quirks to them that sometimes almost feel kitsch-ish but because of his immaculate taste and design, these kitsch-like details have become his signature and are what make his designs so unique (and even irresistible to consumers like myself). Now that you say, I totally agree that he is one of the very rare designers who, whilst still respecting the codes of the house he’s working with, still finds that perfect balance between his own signature and the house’s.
    Speaking of which, another designer I would say possesses this rare quality is Pieter Mulier. I’m not that into fashion but I appreciate good designs and one of my absolute favourite designers for womenswear is Alaia. When he passed away, I was just so so afraid of what the next chapter of Alaia was going to be. But having seen a few seasons, I think Alaia is now in very good hands. Please also make a vdo on Alaia. I still remember the first time I bought Alaia from a multi brand store sale (not knowing what it was at the time but bought it simply because it was just so beautifully done), it was for my younger sister when I was 15 and she was 9 (now she is 25 and has been collecting his pieces since then!) And I guess for me my love for his designs has never faltered since!

      I’m so glad you enjoyed my video, did you see their recent show? I thought it was really interesting and very nice and colourful, really perfect for the brand.
      Alaia, I would love to do a video on, I think his history is so interesting, especially with how respected he was in the fashion industry, then, to be taken over by a man who has previously known more as a stylist and a businessman than a designer, it’s a really interesting evolution. Alaia has this incredible fan base that comes back to their work, more than most brands, I would even go as far as to say, it was like a cult favourite, especially in the 90s, where it took up the same space as what the row is doing now. It’s just fascinating history for a consumer point of view

    This might be an unpopular opinion but in the last few years I think marni slowly diminished into a generic and uninteresting brand.
    What Consuelo Castiglioni started I think was one of the most innovate and interesting fashion brands of its time, it was totally removed from everything else there was so much originality. I would have put it in the same conversations as Prada and Comme des Garçons.
    It used to be a luxury brand but the quality has gone down so much in the last few years, it’s gone form luxury to a contemporary price point focused on selling sweatshirts and sneakers. I remember those old marni collections, I think there was such an intellectual rigour - everything was so off kilter and strangely odd and beautiful. They used to make 70% of their revenue from ready to wear sales which is kinda crazy in todays luxury fashion model focused on selling accessories and beauty to prop up the ready to wear.
    I really miss Lucinda Chamber’s styling and the old menswear, the suiting in particular- to me the new stuff just hasn’t felt quite the same.
    They never did any advertising for twenty years !!!!! the first campaign just before Consuelo left which was a stunning series of images shot by Jackie Nickerson. I used to love anti-camera an online magazine they did which was so ahead of its time.
    They had some really cool stores like the one in London designed by future systems. I miss their true originality in everything they did !

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  Рік тому +2

      Funny enough I ysed to go back to Marni for accessories too because their quality was just completely unmatched, but I dont think they couldve continued the same look they had for 20 years more, they changed up their image before it got tired and thats whats been so exciting to see

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  Рік тому +1

      Also, in regards to your sweatshirt thought, I think a lot of the marni revenue was coming from those products over the years, do you remember how many t-shirts with childrens’ drawings they made? Thats what made me realise that they had to be a part of their business model

    Really strange hearing Marni and MiuMiu described as fashion insider brands since I have know about them since my childhood in the 90s. Fashion insider is the last thing I would call myself with even videos like this being a decidedly guilty pleasure since i feel I can not ethically parttake in the ever changing consumerisme of fashion. In my own life I have always graviteted more buy secondhand or buy to last for as long as possible in my wardrobe.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  Рік тому

      Most people, until recently hadn't heard of them. Ive also been a fan for the longest time, actually Marni was the first pair of designer shoes I bought (and I still have them mayb 15 years later, they still look new even) But everytime I'd say where they were from everyone would always check to see if I said Armani, which I would have to correct, even in big cities like London, so Im with you. I knew about them and enjoyed them both, but many people simply hadn't, maybe they just werent as interested in fashion as you or I.
      Imo, you dont have to buy fashion to be a consumer of it. Engaging with it online can bring social media value, or simply awareness to other people. You can consume their images, ethos and content without consuming the product. I also try to buy second hand, I just like it more, but I still consider myself a consumer

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  Рік тому

      Definitely designer, yes, and its at a high price point, but I don’t think you can judge whether something is designer or not by the price point. Good example of this is Telfar, that’s a designer bag, but it’s no more expensive than a mid tier brand
