It’s melancholy to come to the end of the deep dives but at least there’s “just one more thing” to come. My favorite… The Rockford files. Starring the great James Garner. I cannot wait for the first one…
Thanks for your reviews. I think what you said in this video and indicated in previous reviews you liked is true that more experienced actors and actresses did better in interacting with Peter Falk during the relaunch. The ones that came back for the relaunch like William Shatner, George Hamilton and Patrick McGoohan were the better of the series as well as Faye Dunaway and Rodney Coleman. The younger more inexperienced ones were hit and miss. I have watched the whole series many times including during COVID but never thought about some of the things you said. Very good analysis.
Indeed, the first season telefilms laid the foundation for the remainder of the detective series - including the revival iteration, IMHO (Prescription: Murder and even RFADM do feel like rough drafts for the series itself and thus superfluous).
The seventies episodes have a more serious feel, and seem more cerebral, in my opinion. They are more richly detailed, and for the most part the humour is more subtlely delivered. The later ones are lighter in tone, and, for me, don't stand up to repeated viewings in quite the same way. This change represents generally how tv shows have changed over time. It is not exclusively just Columbo. It is certainly true that a strong newer Columbo episode is better than the weakest ones from the seventies series, without doubt, and there are some very enjoyable adventures, but few, if any come close to eclipsing the average to stronger episodes from the seventies. I tend to find the first four seasons are the most consistent (including the Prescrption Murder and Ransom For A Dead Man), and it is where Peter Falk was at his peak, too, and also prior to the occasional tinkering of the Columbo format. The last few seasons from the seventies aren't quite as consistent, and Peter Falk begins to play the part differently (exaggerated facial expressions and movements, and a more laboured delivery). Not sure why this is. Falk isn't also in the same league playing the role in the newer ones, although when he has a more substantial guest star to spar with, he does raise his game somewhat. Many of the later killers are rather bland compared to their seventies counterparts. I have enjoyed your series very much, and while i don't agree with your every score, i do agree with the essence of what you say for the most part.
Thank you for your thoughtful comments. I think on the whole I agree completely with your assessment and I always try to say, my scores are my personal scores and I would hate it if everyone agreed with them.
Thank you. I have enjoyed your Columbo reviews very much, and your others too. I look forward to your Rockford Files videos.
Columbo never dies. Rewatching entire series starting now.

Thank you. Very grateful for your analysis and reminder. Recording and reviewing a historic show. Enjoyed it.
Loved your takes and glad that you enjoyed the show as much as I did and still do. Thank you!

Monk and Columbo had a lot of similarities. Monk is definitely a great show.
