Well the people have spoken and “Powerslave” it is. Powerslave won out 2 to 1 over it’s closest competitor (not that there were hundreds of votes to tally).
First, a couple of things. Most people have a few “pet peeves” or things they find personally annoying. I happen to have a wild safari park full of them and one such pet peeve happens to be when people post a video and introduce it with something like this - “Here’s my video. I didn’t play very well and I made a lot of mistakes. The sound is not very good either. I may record it again. Enjoy.” With that being said, here’s my disclaimer.
I’ve said before that “I can play fast when I need to…” I usually do best in short bursts as opposed to extended passages. And most of my “speed” is an illusion achieved through the use of triplets, rakes, hammer-ons, pull-offs and other tricks. To ensure that I’d make it to the end of the song, I employed my poor man’s picking technique. Sorry about that. I’ve had no qualms about using that technique in a few of the YES songs I’ve covered but it doesn’t seem as proper in a song that was originally played finger style. Steve Harris is a speed machine with incredible endurance. I am not. One other thing - my bass seems to be tuned a tad flat. It becomes more apparent in the middle/mellow section of the song. Actually, I believe the song is a tad sharp and, once I get on a roll, I tend to go quickly from song to song while I’m recording and sometimes forget to tweak my tuning for certain songs that require tweaking.
Enjoy.
One thing that I was surprised to learn about Steve Harris' playing (beside the fact that he only plays with 2 fingers, not 3) was that he plays with a fairly light touch. When I was a young player, it sounded as if he was pummeling his poor bass to death.
I’ve never been a “metal” guy but liked Iron Maiden when I was young because the bass was so up front and prominent in their music and also because of the horror imagery they employed in their graphics and subject matter of their songs. Any admiration I had for the band was lost when I saw them live on this very tour. It was the worst sounding concert I’ve ever heard and still probably holds that record. And I’ve been to a few lousy sounding shows in my day. The explosive devices being thrown down from the upper level helped me make my mind up to leave after around a half hour or so. The flipped over cars in the parking lot on my way out assured me that I’d made the right decision.
If you’d like to see how Iron Maiden is meant to be played you should check out my friend J Huet - WelshPhantom.

What else? The first runner up was a bit of a surprise - “Pump It Up” by Elvis Costello. I have a nice story to go along with that one.
There was a tie for third place between the the two Ozzy songs - Mr. Crowley or Steal Away. I may have to break that tie, unless you guys want to do it for me. I’m pretty sure those songs will earn me a strike against my channel but I’m not too worrie about that. I seem to have beaten Roger Hodgson back for the time being.
The Halloween party is over and everything is packed away. I’ve really been looking forward to being able to play a bit more and get back to posting and responding to comments and that sort of thing. Lynn and I are on vacation this week as is usual after the party and I’m looking forward to seeing Al Di Meola tomorrow night at B.B. King’s in Manhattan.
the bassline playing during the solos are epic
Yeah dude its like the first solo is out of this world but steve take it even furtherwith his own part
The bassline during the solos are better than the solos itselves. A masterpiece of Harrys.
Your'e the last guy on you tube who has to apologize or make excuses for how he plays. You're a monster player dude
+Brian Barton I still try to portray myself in the best possible light. Thank you.
AMEN, BROTHER!!
God I love the bass guitar. Your playing sent chills over me. Steve is one of the best and so are you Troy.
Love the facial reaction at the 4:00 mark where the bass line gets fun... LOL. Great job. LOVE Steve Harris.
Glad you enjoyed it... Thanks!
Flawless playing, bringing the true unique style of Steve Harris to an even greater light, that solo section itself is absolutely beautiful.
Thanks a lot Jack.
for a second I thought this was Bruce on bass haha. Wonderfull performance, Maiden always gives me goosebumps and you managed to do the same 👌
Deiphobuzz
Well said and I agree !
Absolutely flawless!! You're just an amazing musician!!
Maiden on a Jazz? Heresy! Really though, good cover!
+Old Stoneface Thanks.
I know you must get tired of hearing this, Troy, but that was freaking awesome. When I was growing up Harris was up there in my top 5 or so bass gods along with Geddy. And I still have my vinyl copy of Powerslave; played for a guitarist buddy just the other night. I was a "casual" Maiden fan and I thought this is their best and most complete album.
And light touch or not, I swear you can hear the bass strings clanking the frets all through this album, part of the Steve Harris sound.
+Helium Road Thanks a lot. I was fond of the album when it came out as well but always struggled with playing his parts.
All that string clack is what made me think he was really whacking the bass but then I read in a interview that the plays lightly and has the bass set up with the action very low. Makes sense now.
+Helium Road The attack in his right hand is monsterous! Steve blew our minds from Killers thru Powerslave. Then I got off the ride. Harris is on all rock players lists as an influence for sure
+TJH3113 he uses flatrounds as well..so crazy man!
Yeah he uses rotosound flat strings, I could never get use to them, felt like my fingers stuck to the strings. But I got the Harris slap sound by beating the shit out of it with my right hand. Occasionally I would break strings. One thing I noticed is I lost feel for the non metal songs and still banged hard on bass, couldn’t play without the clacking. For me a blessing and a curse.
Love Steve H. And the rest of maiden, nice job on covering this
8 years ago.....still killrer!! Can't even tell you how many times I've watched you play this song. It's a very good interpretation.
Thanks for all the views! What do I owe you?
Your right hand sure got a work out. Nicely done. I believe this is the first time I have seen you cover a Maiden song. It's kinda weird. In a good way but weird :)
oh damn two of my favorite UA-cam bass players in one comment section.
+Constantine Isslamow Thanks Constantine. Yes, the first. And, most likely, the last.
+Constantine Isslamow MAIDEN RULES!
+TJH3113 but why??
you look very perfectionist TJ haha... good cover bro, you must do more Maiden covers =)
Iron Maiden is second only to Rush, I'd love to hear more. Great work!
+sabresman31 Thanks.
Amazing cover of one of the greatest songs of my fav maiden album!!
Ya just gotta love the alter egos in the background while this humble and soft spoken man in front, nails every baseline better than the originals
Most are from DeathStudios. Thanks so much.
Troy, I watch this video over and over and I’m always blown away. Maiden has always been my favorite. Keep up the awesome bass!
Thanks a lot, Clint.
Excellent, Steve Harris would be proud. I'd love to see you cover Fear Of The Dark
+Tony Merrett Thanks.
Great technique and timing!
Thanks.
🙌👏👏👏 detonou tudo!!!! Muito bom!!!
Muito obrigado Adriano!!!
We are still out here! You are my go to source! Thanks for the great channel.
Yes we are!!! Thanks Michael.
Pretty cool hearing Maiden tunes played on the Jazz bass... and especially so well :) Stellar work as usual. Seeing you post this made my day
+Ryan Hayes Thanks.
+TJH3113 easier to get the Harris "clack" out of a jazz more than a P bass..i just love this video
Great cover Troy! It's always nice to see a cover from you!
+Kreaper Slayer Thanks.
How have I never seen this?! This is awesome! I don't care if you think you were a tad flat in the middle section, I think you nailed it! This was amazing as usual!
Thanks. Actually, I was a little out of tune throughout the entire song...haha. As I said, this was a bit out of my comfort zone, but thanks a lot in any case.
If I could play like that, I would be in a band of some sort. Even just a bar band. You are the bass master. 🤘
Aw, thank you very much.
Steve Harris has always blown my fecking mind.Great job.
+G. Beeker Thanks.
Such an amazing song on Bass the power cords before the chorus sound powerful AF and the slow bass part is so epic, great cover!
Thanks!
I have been a Maiden fan for years, and this still remains my favorite album.
It never ceases to amaze me that Steve did all of this with just two fingers. I was absolutely convinced he was using all four fingers, and it was just two.....
Excellent job, Tony!
+Rendclaw I was surprised as well. Thanks.
Sir, you should do more! Your playing is incredible, this has got to be the best base cover of a Maiden song I have seen, and I have seen plenty and there are some amazing bass players on here on youtube.
Like I've said, this guy should be way more better known than he is
Thanks. I'm afraid this video really highlights my weak points and I'm sure there are better covers of this song than mine out there. I appreciate your sentiment though.
TJH3113 u play it differently than he does but that's what makes musicianship unique wouldnt classify it as u having weak points lol haven't seen any
I've never said this to anyone before in my life.....but I want to be you...and your videos will help me achieve betterment.....unlike most vid's....I can clearly see where your fingers are on the fretboard...I thank you very much for posting all of these...you are going to help me achieve my dream. Thanks for all your work.
+Zatoichi444 That was very nice of you to say and I'm glad that you find the videos helpful. Thank you.
I love you're playing. A very slight funk finger punch to your style for me really adds to this. Quite often I thought the drums to the earlier, mid Maiden era has a swing to it and your approach lends to the rhythm perfectly, great stuff 👍
Thanks, I appreciate it!
The chorus was perfectly performed! Truly, well done.
Thank you.
Thank you, with your great performance you let us see what a fantastic bassline composer is S Harris
Thank you for watching.
Troy, believe me, you've made quite a name for yourself. This is phenomenal playing. You're a gehius Troy and you are blessed with this talent. i am always in awe of you. Thanks. Marvine :-)
Oh please...Thanks Marvine.
I have one word for this ,,, amzing !!!! I didn't know its so complicated to do steve harris bas hahahah,,,you are an amazing bass player ,,,thank you!!!!!
Thanks a lot. This cover showcases some of my weak points and I an sure there are better ones out there.
Eddie approved! Amazing job... It's always fascinating to watch great musicians covering Maiden!
Thanks.
Wicked and unbelievable playing!!! Wow Troy....I just don't know what to say about your rare talent!!!! Phenomenal Troy!!! Thanks! Marvine
Thank you Marvine.
OMG that was amazing...great playing!
+Bassist1945 Thanks.
Great job as always! Love your videos.
Brings me back to when I received the Powerslave cassette for my birthday when it first came out. I listened to this song constantly and still one of my favorites.
+djdel005 Thanks a lot.
wow ive been playin it wrong for years..love your lesson man! UP THE IRONS! \m/
+Von Heller Thanks.
Awesome video as always ! You have amazing range, technique and tone. I appreciate the time you spend making these and being kind enough to share. Thanks
+ysfawolfpack Thanks.
I have to use the "invisible pick" sometimes, too. Particularly, the intro and last verse to "Number of the Beast"-- my right hand just won't get it together for the rakes, at least not yet.
Amazing and inspiring job as always, sir. Your playing is a joy to watch and always makes me want to better myself.
You, it's a handy trick, isn't it? I can only use it on one string at a time though.
Thanks so much for the very kind words, Aleister
WOW Incredible Troy.... I found a whole new library of songs to try, your AWESOME DUDE
Thanks.
Thank you TJ. The neck is easy to see, and you play so relaxed.
Thank "you" for watching and commenting.
This was epic, great job! Not only does Steve Harris use a light RH touch, he also uses flatwound strings!
+Polkhero Thanks. I'd all but forgotten about that...flatwounds. Amazing.
Outstanding as usual. And great idea doing some Maiden. Lot of great sounding bass in their catalog.
Thanks a lot.
I have to agree with THEATREofPAIN270, that is my favorite cover you have done (that I have seen). Its not that I am a Maiden freak, but you friggin NAILED that tune and your playing abilities were shining bright, all the way through. I couldn't take my eyes off that take. Great job "Madman"!!!!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it, even though it's not one of my favorites.
I love your playing, you always get a nice sound and great feeling with the song! It's a surprise to hear you covering my favourite band :)
Thanks a lot. I was as surprised as you.
You Sir are a master of your craft. I love watching your videos, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the kind words.
Great work there. I must watch again a few times to see what rubs off.
Very good ! Thanks for sharing with us !
Nicely done, I always enjoy the videos!
+dabeez68 Thanks.
Awesome cover, your finger plucking is so fluid!!
Thank you and thanks for the kind words.
no apology needed. sounds good.
I'm with you Troy. I was never much of a metal guy, but Iron Maiden is one of the only metal bands that I've really liked and I think it's because I'm a big prog rock fan and they have a more complex and rich sound when compared to other metal acts. No offense to other metal acts. Great job on this one Troy! One of my personal favorite Iron Maiden songs.
Yeah, it was probably the hint of prog, along with the horror imagery that caught my interest. Steve's a bit too much for me to handle in terms of endurance though, so I don't play much Maiden. Thanks and take care!
Excellent! Steve Harris is no slouch on a 4 string, and you nailed it! 👍🏻
Another bassist i really admire is Roger Glover - straight forward bluesy/rock bassist, no frills or showing off, just gets the job done. It's like who would I pick over guitarists - Blackmore or Malmsteen?
Answer: When i want to hear good guitar playing, there's only one answer......def don't want to go the mindless shredding route.
Thanks!
Definitely Blackmore.
Thanks so much Troy, great job!!!
+kevin timperley Thanks a lot.
Up em 🤘🤘
I've been watching your videos for a long time now and I've been waiting to see what would make you pause a bit and have to think about your technique and what might actually wear you out. Of course it was Steve Harris. Geddy Lee and Chris Squire are workouts, Steve Harris is a widowmaker as far as stamina. You did a damn good job man and I even discovered something in there I had never noticed and I've been listening to this album religiously since it came out in 1984! Well done sir.
Exactly right about Steve Harris being an endurance test. I don't know how he does it. I've read that, despite what it sounds like, he actually plays with a very light touch. That would probably help as I've done that with a few quick tunes; "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" comes to mind, but it doesn't come naturally to me. Thanks for the great comment and take care!
Well done!!
I'm with you when you talk of endurance. My band plays Toys In The Attic. That is such a fast song. When I play it right, it's a great feeling. Haven't felt that lately. Lol. Back to the woodshed. Keep up the awesome work.
Completely awesome! Thanks!
+DuaneWanda Matt Thanks.
Hombre que cover tan limpio y bien tocado, eres el mejor
Muchas gracias.
Congratulations on the perfect interpretation! 🤩
Thank you so much!!
Holy shit this is perfect!!
Eh, but thanks anyway.
Great Work! Thanx to Brazil!
Thanks a lot!
Brilliant,sounded great!
+Talons of the Raven Thanks.
Really nice job. It may sound like nitpicking but Harris never did "plectrum pick" -- it's all fingertips. And he never anchors his thumb which I've found that to be a part of how he gets his sound. But you got it! And with a J!
After playing this song, the ol forearm is pretty warm, all those tendons and ligaments working overtime. Great version.
Definitely. Thanks.
Awesome choice!
+BackToTheFutureBandC Thanks.
Really liked it with your own spin on it. I know you were trying to keep up but I liked the little tricks you used.
Thanks a lot. I wasn't trying to put my own spin on it, just trying to keep up.
Nice job Troy! Shame about the tuning.....Annoyingly, Maiden tuning seems to vary song to song and album to album on these older pieces.....the joys of analogue tape ;) Considering this is clearly out of your comfort zone hats off for uploading this! Btw, you must have been unlucky at your Maiden gig, I've never had trouble in over 30 years of shows.....perhaps watch Live After Death dvd from this era, you might appreciate it, who knows ;) And a BIG thanks for the heads up to my channel, I've got the 2nd half of Piece of Mind on my pc that I keep on meaning to re do, so hopefully this will get my backside in gear lol
+J Huet - WelshPhantom Thanks. Yeah, I do that from time to time...the tuning thing. Yeah, every band (and their sound engineer) is entitled to an off night here and there. A couple of my other "worst sound" experiences have been at Rush shows, so no one is immune from it. No problem. Hope you're doing well.
Thank you sir. Very helpful.
Glad to hear that. Thanks for watching.
Sounds Great
That totally rocked!
+HiViz Steph Thanks.
Fantastic cover!
Thanks a lot!
On point! Good job.
Thanks.
Hands down my favorite cover you've done. I think heavy metal, I think Iron Maiden. Steve Harris is a bass god. 👍👍👍👍
Ah, this one would probably be on my short list of "least favorites". I'm glad that you like it though.
AWESOME!! Kick ass as always!!
Thanks a lot!
Troy. Awesome of course. I like to see you do Flash Of The Blade. That always crossed me up. Sounds like Steve plays a different run every time during the chorus parts.
+G Playahead Thanks. I'll give it a listen.
We asked for it, so here it is: Powerslave. I take a deep bow, very good!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN Troy!!!
+ThunderBassist Jay Thanks. Yes, it is a good Halloween song, isn't it. Happy Halloween.
great job Troy I think your the best on youtube
+gordon newt Thanks. That was nice of you to say.
Awesome job!
Thank you kindly.
Nice, saw them twice w Anthrax.. great effort✌👊😎
Thanks. Cool.
Thanks for posting this song ... I didn't know you had done any Maiden. Good job ... Steve's playing gave me my initial interest in bass.
Bravo !!!
Thank you !!!
Fantastic!!!!!
Thanks.
Excellent. 👍
Many thanks!
Somehow I missed this one when you did it! I think it's great and Maiden has been my favorite group since around 1980. Harris is indeed a beast, he also uses 50-150 flats most of the time. You are also correct, the remaster is a little off key as well if you are tuned properly. My main guitar warm up is 4 or 5 songs off Powerslave and the tuning is very apparent (this seems to have been fixed on Apple Music and Spotify in 2021). While I have worked hard to become a bassist over the last 9 years or so - still coming along, I completely understand the notes on speed. I try to do Animate using Geddy's flamenco and rarely make it unless I've been playing a lot more bass than guitar for a few months. The few Maiden songs I do play on bass I try to pick the slow ones ;) You can play pretty much any Steely Dan or Rush song so IMHO you never need to apologies on anything, always in awe of your ear and skill Troy!
Thanks Marb. I knew he used flats, but didn't know about the steel cables. I do know that he plays with an extremely light touch, even though it sounds like he's beating the crap out of his bass. Thanks for the kind words. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and I'm not ashamed to show my weaknesses once and a while. Take care.
you sound great!! i hope i can play like this someday!
Thank you so much! I'm sure you will! If you like playing Iron Maiden you'll need to work on speed and endurance. You'll do it if you invest the time into getting there.
Amazing !!!
Thanks.
Always love your playing. And you're in my area. We should get together and jam out one day. But the tuning might be off a bit. Don't get me wrong, I think you're one of the best on the tube for sure or maybe intonation or something. You rock bro
+jmroxx1 Thanks. Yeah, I mentioned the tuning in my little paragraph below the video. This song is just a hair sharp and I forgot to adjust my bass. Once I got through it, there was no way I was going to do it over.
Wow, you like Maiden. Cool.
Great cover. I thoroughly enjoyed! BTW the green demon with the horns is my favourite :)
Thanks. That mask, like most of my masks, is from DeathStudios and is called, "Old Nick".
Maiden... finally! Killed it!! Up the irons!!!
+gslucas Thanks.
Awesome!
+Gabriel Cavalcante Thanks.
how is it only find this now? Great job Troy!
Better late than never! Thank you Patrick!
Yes! Awesome!!
Thank you.
Nice cover, I liked the extended thumpnail playstyle, thought it was a pick at first. :D
Thanks! It's actually the nail on my index finger. I just squeeze that finger and my thumb together as if I were holding a pick and flail away.
💕 love it
Thanks Cindy.
Not sure where you saw them but I saw Maiden in Nashville on the current tour and they (and Ghost) sounded great. And no overturned cars LOL
I'm sure steve would enjoy your cover. Very nice :D
You think? Thanks.
Great! As always..
+Gary Hise Thanks.
