Without the hood it's a lovely shawl that won't easily fall off. The hood is a bonus. Good job teaching a great base concept that can probably be applied to a variety of favorite stitches!
Yesterday I have finished the hooded Cloak, which I have made as I have started a Walk to Mordor. It was just finished as I received the first medal (of 5). Thank you for this tutorial, I had fun making it.
Thank you so much for this pattern, I'm going to crochet the AOT Scouts emblem into the back so I can have a comfy cloak to wear in and out of cosplay. Thanks so much for the video and pattern!
I was scared to make a cloak, I haven't crocheted long most other patterns worried me but this made it look so simple. I think watching it be made and explained along the way is better for me to understand rather than reading it.
Was a little bit tricky but I used stitch markers at the increases and saw that trick right away so once you said it too I knew it was right! And if you look row by row it zigzags bc you always end on that extra stitch!
So, I've made this cloak a few times and I have to say I really love it. Every time I want to make a new cloak, either for myself or as a gift, I always end up turning back to this tutorial at some point just to make sure I'm not self-sabotoging myself as I go. Thank you so much for posting this video and sharing this wonderful art with the world! People like you are what keeps the crochet and other fabric-based communities alive!
Im not even 10 minutes in and i can already say, this is so easy to follow, i have only been making those popular cat ear beanies, some scarfs, and i want to make a simple blanket- i thought making a cloak would be hard... but you make it sound and look so so simple, because it is 😂 so thank you for making this. I will be following along the video with sage green yarn :3 might make a yt short on it after the new year!
I started this project only God knows when and feels like over a year and am just finishing the project am super proud of myself and your tutorials are super easy to understand and easy to follow so i appreciate you for it. Thank you.
I'm working on this right now in a blue ombre yarn and I can't wait to wear it! I am going a few steps further to modify it by lining the inside with fabric possibly, definitely adding a hidden pocket or twi on the inside and a few floral details on the outside. Maybe even a little trim around the edges.
i’m finally getting to use this video since halloween is coming up. my costume is snow white and i wanted a classic hooded shawl since it'll probably be cold!
Interesting! I had an idea of how to go about making a cloak before looking up a video tutorial but your pattern makes a lot of sense. I'm trying to do a white to blue to black ombre cloak (white at top of hood, black at bottom of cloak) and wasn't sure how well it would go but I think I can manage it with your pattern. Thanks a ton!
So I am a haunt actor, and I used your tutorial on the cape part. The hood I made my own pattern with dragon scales. I am also adding a part that I can take off and change between having dragon scales on the cape and not having them. Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial it helped me out a ton.
Right on! Doesn’t have to be part of a costume at all. I use that word in title thought because it is a key search term so people who are doing costumes can find this.😉
I use knitting markers to help me keep track of when to increase or something that differ from the rest of the pattern. Of course it desires some counts, but when when I’m crocheting I find it much easier not to lose track of where I am :-)
@@crochet.with.illjay yup, I noticed that two hours into making it. I was like “yikes, probably should have waited” it looks pretty big, but I hope it turns out alright lol

Hello! :) Your cape is lovely. Do you have any idea (currently) if it would work to follow your pattern with a sport/fingering weight yarn? I bought some bamboo yarn and it's sooo perfect for this. :)
Hi, yes I think it could be translated for sport weight fairly easily. You would need to do a few extra ch to starts. As long as it’s a multiple of 6 should still work up I think!
i was trying to figure out what part we are starting on so i know how long mine should be! i think its the neck we are straing at right? hopefully thats right so im not making the whole thing too small 😅😂

I actually just picked up this exact yarn in a different color to make this cloak. It is a Hobby Lobby brand and normally costs $5.49 per 300 yard skein. But Hobby Lobby’s entire yarn section is 30% off every other week. This week what I call an “off week.” The yarn will be on sale again starting next Monday (Oct. 30). The stores are closed on Sundays, but the website is always open. And I believe the sales online change on Sunday.
I am very excited to attempt this for a ren faire! I haven't watched the whole video yet so idk if i just didnt watch long enough but i was wondering how many grams were used? Tysm if anyone can help!

Hi, it's so beautiful. I am confused about the size though. How many ch for adult medium size ? In the written recipe it says measure the neckline and multiple with 2,5. That is a lot more ch ?
Hi Pia, I ch 66(+2) for an adult medium. Any other multiple of 6(+2) will work. I am updating the pattern so that sizing is more clear. So you said you end each row with the two double crochet before starting a new row. I don’t think I’m repeating 6 times like you said but I’m doing this smaller to create like a carrying cloak for my infant child. Anyways, my point is, is that when I’m finishing a row I’m doing the pattern like instructed and then I have 5 or 6 stitches left before the end of the row. So I’ve been doing the two double crochet even though I just did the increase 5 or 6 stitches prior to.

Lion brand mandalas ombre I can use for this but they are not to soft and silky
Could I use Caron simply soft instead ?
@@crochet.with.illjay I have all of these yarns
I do t want to go out and buy more yarn if I do t need it
@@cassandrarudolph1307 Any weight 4 yarn is fine.
What size is 68?
So you said you end each row with the two double crochet before starting a new row. I don’t think I’m repeating 6 times like you said but I’m doing this smaller to create like a carrying cloak for my infant child. Anyways, my point is, is that when I’m finishing a row I’m doing the pattern like instructed and then I have 5 or 6 stitches left before the end of the row. So I’ve been doing the two double crochet even though I just did the increase 5 or 6 stitches prior to.
I really don’t know if my original comment made sense… I sincerely hope it did 😅 I love this project and I just really want this to come out well. If it does, I’m gonna repeat this project for my cousins baby
this pattern isnt adding up for me, its confusing ??

I'm having same issue I started same amount of stitches she did and counting 11sts , 12 dts so on but I'm still not getting double crochet at the end. On the row with count 10 and do 2 dbl crochet in the 12th stitch when I get to the end I'm left with 2 stitches remaining
This comment is mostly for me, but the hood portion starts roughly around the 13:40 mark
About what size do u estimate this to be? If I follow this pattern exactly.
Hi Jamie, check out part two for the finished details. I will mention though any slight difference in yarn weight or tension will yield different results. The Crochet Hooded Cloak, Part 2, Halloween Crochet Witch Costume

Thank you!
I need to be a cute witch so I'm making a pink one
Let me know how it turns out :)
It turned out great, I'm going to mak e it a bit longer though 😊
Am I able to make it longer?
You can make it any length you want… stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow.
@@crochet.with.illjay ok thank you! I'll be sure to watch
It’s posted now :)
How many yards do I need? I’ve got 1,456 yd of purple and it’s hopefully gonna be floor length once finished. Gonna be a cape/cloak for my boyfriend for our dnd campaign
Hi Mercedes, check out part 2 for final specs. The Crochet Hooded Cloak, Part 2, Halloween Crochet Witch Costume

Man it would be really helpful to say what you start with... Like... Where on the cape are we I don't know how long or big
I briefly mention that it is the neckline, thanks for feedback though. There is a written pattern for sale if that would be more helpful for you. illjay.com/collections/patterns/products/pdf-pattern-the-hooded-cloak
ok so i did 78 stisches. so i counted 12th stitch and i but a dubble stitch.
What I don't get is many of these creators will show u how to make it but the instant you want the pattern they want money.
Hi 👋 I am running a full time crochet business. I make income from my pattern sales and also income from YouYube views. You can keep coming back to my channel and watching my tutorials and learn a pattern for free. But a step by step written guide with sizing details that is a printable pdf copy you can keep forever without using the internet will cost a few dollars. Either way I make money off you ✌🏼 thanks for the engagement.
72÷6=12 and 78÷6=13, so I'd do an inc into the 13ty st not the 12....
Correct.
Está muy bonito pero lo hubieras subtitulado en español.
Gracias!
Am i the only one who had a hard time with the hood?
Sew me show me 😅
