Staffordshire Bull Terriers make amazing companions, and the pros definitely outweigh the cons. But Staffies come with some problems that you should be aware of.
Staffies love to chew, dig, and cause chaos in your home if you're not careful and don't provide them with everything they need.
However it is simple to provide your Staffy with things such as chew toys, taking them for regular exercise and keeping an eye on them when they're in the garden. 🦴

The operative word here is "terrier" - the terrier breeds are notorious for their stubbornness. I have a staffy mix, and he's perfectly well-behaved... until he's not. The problem is that they are obedient unless/until something grabs their focus, then nothing else exists.

I just lost my baby at 16 years of age due to kidney failure sadly.
My first and only dog, absolutely chilled and mellow from a puppy, great with other people and loved my chickens and regularly room naps with my chinchilla too. Never ever walked on a leash from 8 weeks old. We were together all day everyday for her whole life so training was essentially non stop for 16 years. She never put a paw wrong and we did so much together over the years, came to work with me everyday and was an absolute blessing in my life. RIP Memphis 🐾

You just made me cry😭😭 tears of missing mine. It's 4 weeks since I lost my Ruby. Same here, what an amazing dog💖 We were inseparable and best friends. She loved our chickens and loved being reminded it's bedtime so she could go tuck herself in our bed. Always wanted to have a pillow too. I hope you find comfort in your memories. She got lymphoma and in the end after trying everything, we had to say goodbye. She has the best spot in the garden and we plan to plant a maple tree next to her grave. I am happy that on Saturday we will meet out potential adoptive staffy Tom. He seems so cheeky and I see a bit of Ruby in him😂. I look forward to spoiling him for the reminder of his time on earth. I have owned Staffies for many years. I believe we are on our 10 & 11th staffies. We have two girls one is a pure bred English Blue staffy and one is a black American staffy.
Now being long time owners we still forget the odd warning signs. Like spending $1000's on replacing kids prescription glasses that the pups chew.
Don't buy a beautiful 10 person outdoor setting suite and then buy two staffy pups. We have two chairs out of ten left.
They are the best dogs I have ever owned. Plus if you are serious about owning a staffy you need rules and stick to them.
    Staffys have rules too!
If they can reach it! It belongs to them. If they destroy that item, then it becomes yours again.
We only purchase Staffy rated toys nowadays - because everything else is butter to them.
We buy Goat Hooves filled with Kangaroo bits and bods. It takes a rottie 6 months to eat all of it. My two little turds destroy one each in 5 days!
Don't be put off by all this - take it as a challenge and you will laugh a lot and love them a lot more!

They are comical dogs as well as loveable. A well known comedian in Australia stated that Staffies are not a well known breed to the elite but that those on welfare know them very well. They wreak so much damage to household items if they are not watched and corrected and we are not always present to do that. Staffies need an Alpha leader. I am not of that disposition normally but I am for her and it has worked well over the years. At nine years of age she is the best she ever has been. As a pup, loveable but never to be repeated experience.

Thanks for adding me to your group. It's good to have others who think they are lovable dogs and should not be banned. I went about 15 years without a dog and now I have a rescue American Blue Staffy about 8 years old now. We have had him just over 2 years and he is so loving. I've had shepherds, Australian terrier, red heeler...all good, wonderful dogs but nothing compares to the huge Boof we now have. He is bigger than me, 50 kgs/( 110 lbs I think) and we haven't weighed him yet BUT he hates other animals. I think this is something to do with his previous place but not sure. Because of this I had to find a vet that would come to us and she does for the cost of her petrol!!!!!! That is a miracle in itself. She is wonderful. Boof is big, clumsy and loves all humans. He is the most lovable dog I have come across. He adapted to us as if he had lived here his whole life. We love him to bits. So glad he came into our lives.

I had to make what was called a "tiger pit" for my staffie. It's a hole in the ground I put wood chips and hamster bedding so she would dig there and not everywhere else in my backyard. I would put some of her toys in and when she dug it all out , I would rake it all back in.
She was a handful and I miss her almost every day.

My only disagreement is that a staffy needs an “experienced” owner as never having had a dog as a kid hasn’t prevented me from raising the most loving, gentle creature ever. Shows only love to humans and animals alike … cept maybe for squirrels but then her bark is way worse than her bite and if they dont run from her she chickens out of running after them. Will only bark at them when theyre safely up a tree. Proper bag of wind she is sometimes.

My staffy is 7 years old and he taught a Weimaraner a valuable lesson today, the Weimaraner was 10 months old and very big and boisterous, he tried to mount my staffy and the Weimaraner owner started to panic because she thought things were about to go wrong , I said it’s ok and to let it play out, my staffy had to give him six warnings before he got the message!!!🤣 now I keep my staffy fit and do a lot of tug with him , I’m on the other end of the rope 😊 so he had the strength to fend off this big dog, my staffy looked powerful and super fast and on the sixth warning he gave him a proper look at his teeth which are impressive, it was good to see because my staffys temperament is bullet proof to which the other dogs owner can testify, they then played for a bit before she thanked me for letting it (play out), I said I know my boy👌🏻

Very good assessment, one of the best I've seen. I've had several staffies and I've never had one that is an avid digger but they are full of energy and needs lot of time, and lots of toys, and ideally as little time as possible left on their own. They are intelligent dogs and quick to learn but do get bored quickly, especially indoors. Pulling is one of the things you need to address quickly.

Your video is excellent. Our Staffy Boy left us at 16 1/2 years. Yep little tinker ah on his early walks pull pull pull. We got him to sit down at every pull. Ok time consuming & we did not get far but wow it worked!!!!!!!!!!!1 A wee pup should not walk far so no bother. Fixed the pulling tho. We found Kong make of toy the best for his chewing. He was a very good boy well exercised socialised and loved to play ball or frisby games. He came with us on 3 month trips thru France, Spain & Portugal in a camper he came with us every where. If our dog was not wanted then we did not go there as took it we were also unwanted. He was a loving cuddly wee chap no 11 the runt of the litter. Gosh miss my boy like crazy. Now have a rescue from a sad sad life in another country that made him a mess. Love him to bits and he loves us & his new life.

My Staffy really has none of those issues, only time he pulls on the lead is when he sees a rabbit or squirrel. Otherwise he’s very good on the lead. He’s never dug in the garden, never had issues with him jumping and only a little chewing when a pup. Main issue I’ve found is that he’s not keen on bigger male dogs that haven’t been neutered.

How did you work aggression out of him. I am 16 years old and me and my father recently adopted a really sweet and loving senior Staffordshire bull terrier. He is a softie and is like a teddy bear to all human life. Everything is great about him except that when we meet other dogs on walks he sometimes starts softly whining and then starts making himself big and tries to be dominant. Sometimes he does it without the whining. He is great with my uncles Labrador retriever but they have been together now a few times. Any tips? I’d really appreciate some since I can’t find anything online about how to desensitize senior Staffies.

I have my third, Bruno, now 2 1/2 yo, Mostly a very good boy, prone to forgetting his manners when excited, but am constantly seeing improvements! es, they can be a handful, but firm, calm, regular training, and exercise are key. I would recommend the Staffy to anyone, with caveats, you need to be constant, never leave a young staffy to it's own devices, get them socialised, and make them obey your command. Do these things, reward good behaviours, and you will have a wonderful dog who will reward you with love, loyalty and companionship!

Fortunately she never chewed anything she wasn't supposed to but man did she loved tearing things apart. Playing with tennis balls at one point or another she would always stop and you would just see her Jaws tightening up and pop. The biggest change is that you will be giving up most privacy and personal space. If you don't have any problem with that then a Staffy is the dog for you. And they usually get along well with cats.

I Have a cross Staffordshire American bull, great little dog, he's 20 weeks old now and has this aggressive excited thing of jumping at all people and other dogs, of course most dogs see this as an attack so not good. Will he change as he gets older? We have had Rotties before this staff and nor had this problem.

Oddly, mine (half AmStaff half pibull terrier according to DNA testing) never makes any kind of audible noise. She 'can' bark, so it's not a mute or voice box thing. I suspect rough treatment from her "original" owner as she was found tied to a tree abandoned at 3.5 months old. She's a really good dog, very smart. Absolutely no aggression in her at all, she won't even defend herself among other dogs.

She is a calm soul walks nicely everywhere. Only problem she has is when it comes to a certain corner in my street she litteraly acts as if under a spell and wants to pull with all her strength into the damn road i always stop her pull back stop. But literally its something she cant shake. When are past that corner she is back to normal

So don't agree with this but they really pull on the lead and jumping with exciting on anyone visiting our house etc. But staffies are so funny and loyal so for me that's already forgiven😜

@@scandalousrocker2650 that literally makes no sense. Loads of people BUY bred staffies and then give them up = which makes them a rescue. Staffies come in all shapes and sizes. I didnt know we had to be so specific too. Staffy X still have all the full staffy characteristics. Just like people who think they're full british 😄 usually a mixed bag. Its bloody normal. Diversity is cool. Erase the word mongrel. No dog is lesser than for being mixed. Just like people!! Staffy is more an umbrella term atm. Let people love staffies, crossed with others or not 🙂

@@scandalousrocker2650 i honestly can't believe there are still breed snobs. I thought that was a 90's thing. If you pay for animals its somehow more superior? Nah animals aren't accessories to make you look better and feel cooler. They are individuals who all deserve love no matter the breed. I rather rescue an animal languishing in kennels or gona be put to death rather than put money in some selfish greedy exploitative breeder's pocket. Thousands of staffies were given up years ago, thousands pts as no one wanted them. Because people are too shallow and rather go buy a new puppy. Its also not true that old dogs are disposable and can't learn. I adopted aggressive seniors who hadnt been socialised and they soon chilled out with the right training 🖤🐶

My staffy is pretty chilled on the lead. Sometimes if we see another dog on the walk she will have a burst of energy but she usually reacts to the energy of the other dog. If the other dog is chilled out she will be too. One time in the area I used to live I bumped into a couple walking a dog the same breed. I approached them and after a minute of talking we realised they are sisters from the same litter. My girl got jealous because I was giving her sister a pat and went to attack her. I thought it was their dog trying to attack mine?but they said it was my dog. Maybe they picked up the scent of each other and went into some sort of PTSD puppy memory about fighting for food?

I have had a chow chow golden retriever mix Safeara Rose who was also a rescue dog I adopted.... she was not only my dog but also my daughters dog and we had her when GB was bout 2 or 3....
My staffordshire BULL HEADED terrier iz also a rescue dog and I trained him before I adopted him as a service dog, not a house dog. This dog Kylo Jamez has gone tit for tat with me when it comes to being spiteful and peeing everywhere in my basement. Even though he was a pit bull and a male my mom was scared of him but finally let me keep him. He is a very very stubborn bullheaded twin to me and he saved my mental health. I am physically disabled and he knows how to help me when I fall, taught him with my own words, English as well as the German word NEIN. He is still not fixed and I've had hym for 2 years in October and I got him right before he turned a year old. He snapped at me earlier when I was trying to take his back paw to trim his nails, I told my 12 year old daughter to back off and if he is actually gonna bite anyway, it is going to be mom. He has had a very traumatic first home with must have had him locked in his 36" kennel all day, being tortured by guys fingers all day cuz now that he is starting to calm down, it has been a never ending training him and showing him the love his first home should have shown him. The second owner got him for a service dog to help wyt his daughter but she is allergic to his hair so he was with a good friend of mine who was his foster dad and asked me to come train him and work with him. I knew I wanted him when I seen him all white and silver coat with a half of face brown. There is nothing more joyful for me to see when I look at muh spoiled and well loved in his forever home. Thank you Father above for changing my mom's mind, cuz he definitely is right over to mom when I cry or he knows imma upset. I am still working with people and around him, I have taught him WATCH, DONT TALK!! When we r out at a parking lot and as long as they don't go within 4 inches from the car, EXCESSIVE!! When he starts barking at the neighborhood starting shit. I also have him trained to leave it and stay so I can grab the toy n make him wait with that one front paw up and his green eyes so intent to not move till his bone gets thrown. I have also taught him to wait for meh to snap, point at the ground and say COME GET IT n clap twice. He is so funny too and when he sneezes we say BLESS YOU SIR!!!

Our boy is very vocal. I love it when he talks, but really dislike it when he barks. You can feel the concrete floor vibrate when he barks really loud and you can feel your ear drum vibrating - hard to believe swuch a small creature can generate that level of noise.
