Tony and Johanna take a look back at The Phantom Menace and try to view it through a positive lens. In this movie review/podcast they will talk about all the things that make it good like Darth Mauls amazing lightsaber skills, the new world and creatures made by George Lucas, and how its not a cynical cash grab like Disney's new movies.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) is a young apprentice Jedi knight under the tutelage of Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) ; Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who will later father Luke Skywalker and become known as Darth Vader, is just a 9-year-old boy. When the Trade Federation cuts off all routes to the planet Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are assigned to settle the matter.

Actually, Padme doesn't look like a Geisha, she's dressed like a traditional Mongolian royal. And she's also very unnecessary. I always felt like she was just there to give Anakin some form of character trait other than "future Darth Vader." And the way her character progresses, she seems to go from well-written character in The Phantom Menace to generic worried pregnant housewife by part 3.
Say what you want about the sucker but the design is kinda brilliant, if it weren't for the fact that it looks like Jar Jar. If that split cap was just a normal pop-open lid that didn't look like a dog-fish-man-thing's head, maybe more like a neuralizer from Men in Black, that would be the best way to keep the candy safe since the time push pops started giving suckers a marker cap.
Hey did you know Tupac was supposed to be mace windu
@@Staticseven1 Does she NOT, though?
Is the spider web included?
Love how every time they reference a character they pulled out an action figure or something 😆
Literally every character of every single frame had their own action figure before the movie even came out. Perfect use for them.
Can’t wait for them to cover the best plot point in Attack of the Clones: Palpatine telling a guy, who tells a guy, who tells a shapeshifter, who tells a droid, who tells some worms to kill a senator.
I used to think this plot point was ridiculous and unrealistic until I met independent contractors.
Also, if it had succeeded, the Chosen One would have never joined up with Palpy in the first place.
I mean it makes a lot of sense. It gives off the vibe that there is a conspiracy with a lot of layers.
Ok Cosmonaut 😒
It doesn't seem you're very enthusiastic about this buddy.
I got to see this movie in a private screening as a kid (before it released) because my step mom worked for humongous entertainment ( freddie fish, spy fox, putt putt games) and the entire team was invited. I was a +1
It was an amazing experience
I remember the festivities on opening day more so than the movie. Everyone in chairs, tables and a sofa on the sidewalk of the theater. Everyone playing Star Wars Legos, games, light saber battles, and music. The local news and paper came by.
The movie itself was fine. Wasn't too into the trade disagreement, but I loved the action and sets. The Pod race, gungan battle, and the lightsaber three way were "Wizard."
Tony is so full of sarcasm that I don't really know anymore when he is being honest or sarcastic and it makes it hard to really know what he is thinking about something.
I was thinking the same thing
That's the point-can't cancel somebody for expressing their opinions if they have no genuine opinions to begin with.
Full of sarcasm, he is
Same and it's annoying
I actually love qui gon jinn. He's my favorite jedi. I hope returns in a series. Nice qui gonnfigure! Wish i had one.
I will say it was the hype surrounding this movie that got me into Star Wars to begin with. My dad told you thought that was good now I'm gonna show you the real Star Wars and I saw the original trilogy after that. My family and I went to Blockbuster after seeing this in theaters and we rented the original trilogy.
Did you like original?
I'm one of the few who legitimately love this film and the Prequels, but this was a very fun review. I loved all the merch you two played with.
I don't think you're one of the few.
I've got problems with this, chiefly tone, but there's a bunch of cool stuff here.
Dude I'm the same way. I defended it when it was hated the most.
Like most of the Snix movies, Episode 1 exists because George Lucas had an idea for a special effect- the podrace sequence
Snix?
Gotta say, the unboxing segment was so wholesome. I love seeing grown folks be kids again. Rock on!
when Qui Gon looks at Shmi after he finds out Ani's Midichlorian count, they play the Sith music , which makes me and others wary of her past
I was 5 years old in 1999. When people ask me which movie is my favorite from the franchise I have to say TPM. I say this with rose tinted glasses on because in ‘99 to me everything was awesome, Pokémon, Nintendo 64, Cartoon Network, Toonami, Nickelodeon, and Star Wars. Whenever I would see the toys or the video games advertised back then, as a little kid, Seeing Darth Maul or an N1 starfighter on TV and in stores was so cool. I loved the original trilogy because of games like Rouge Squadron being one of the first games I ever rented at Blockbuster but the prequels and the TPM especially will always remind me of a simpler time despite what people say about them. I love throwing on TPM even on as background noise when I’m doing stuff around the house on my day off sometimes, but I’ll always stop to hear duel of fates and watch that legendary lightsaber fight.
It’s nothing to be ashamed of. I still love the cheesy 1980s ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie with Dolph Lundgren despite the fact that it’s objectively a terrible movie but that doesn’t change how I feel.
i was 11 and loved it
I would rather watch "The Phantom Menace" over "The Rise of Skywalker" any day during the week. At least Episode I really did try to be different and fresh. You could make the argument it burrow's from "A New Hope", but its a lot more subtle in its execution than "The Force Awakens" really taking influence from Episode IV, or "The Rise of Skywalker" just being a pale imitation of "Return of the Jedi". I know George Lucas said the saga is like a poem and it rhythms, but Episodes' VII and IX are really took it too far. Its Star Wars, it can't be that difficult to be creative, can it?
How is TPM's borrowing from ANH subtle? It's pure laziness.
Lmao, it's okay when Lucas does it, but anyone is lazy. Okay.
@@anthonymaslow798 do you have thw vhs tape shown her of star wars eisode 1
I am very nostalgic for Episode I. I had just gotten into Star Wars just a couple years earlier with the Special Editions. I was very late to the Star Wars party (I never cared to get into it when I was a kid.) I remember the hype for this movie and got alot of the action figures from this movie (which I still have in their original packaging in a big box in my closet) I had the novelization & a Darth Maul poster & a Episode I Monopoly game. Saw in the theater 3 times. Good times.
Great episode, guys! I can’t believe you opened so much vintage merch!
I normally love every Hack the Movie episode but the intentional and excessive sarcasm got old and annoying very fast. I would love to see an actual Hack the Movies review of this movie with the great discussion and analysis they usually do.
Well worded. It's what I was thinking too. I thought the act would drop after a short bit. They lay it on pretty thick.
I was thinking the same thing. just review it like any other movie or don't do it all
Love how dude has a sense of humor about his reactions. But really structure wise Episode 1 is not a good film. I certainly take the prequels over the terrible Disney trilogy though.
nah 2 and 3 are terrible, only 9 is as terrible as them. 7 is just boring and 8 can be recut into a great movie
@kevindiesal or make a separate casino movie. it's not that bad (but not as good as luke or funny as rebels) but there are three plots that do not come together and all have dumb resolution going nowhere
"I'll take the prequels over the Disney trilogy" is the saddest thing I've ever agreed with as a SW fan
@@fonkyfesh-old 🤣 hey believe me I know it’s sad. If you told my past self before 2015 that Disney would make me not care one bit about Star Wars after 7, 8, and 9 I wouldn’t believe it but here we are. I’m not even looking forward to the Kenobi show.
Prequels. Disney. Saying you prefer one over the other is like saying you prefer severe diarrhea over severe constipation or vice versa.
The sarcasm is thick in this review.
Hahaha.
Well done!
I feel bad for dragging my mom to take me to see this. She was probably so confused by it all lol.
now i just hope that yall got Lloyd Kaufman to play Dual of the Fates on his clarinet!!!!!!
This was a great toy ad for Phantom menace lol, Great channel keep up the good work Tony!
That three-way fight with Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and DARTH MAUL is the BEST lightsaber fight EVER in any Star Wars movie. FOR. SURE. Darth Maul is the SH%T
So many other fans agree. Thats why he got a special resurrection from Lucasfilm.
Tony: Kevin Smith cries way too much.
Also Tony: Puts together a cameo from Eric Butts who's known for crying a little too much.
This was the first movie I saw in theaters when I was 5 years old. So it will always hold a special place in my heart
I've always wished that there was a deleted scene where, during the celebration of their victory at the end, we got a quick shot of Boss Nass teaching Amidala how to do his royal jowl-jiggle. Just imagine him doing it, then gesturing for her to try it out, then little Natalie Portman shaking her face as hard as she could!
Lmfao Bruh
Lol
Something tells me that the title will change to "The Phantom Menance is Trash!" 8 minutes into the review.
Episode 1 was underrated and badass especially seeing it in theaters at a young age. Saw it with my dad and cousin man it was so badass especially the duel of fates battle at the end. Also Jessica with the save the starfighter almost got it lol!
Ugh, I’m sick of people saying Lucas’s multimedia marketing skills as “movies are made to sell toys”. I guess KOTOR is terrible because people hate merchandising.
I unironically like this film. It’s my personal favorite of the prequels.
Same.
It’s beyond terrible but ok.
If i had to pick a prequel, this is my favorite, too. Kind of by default. because this is the one my sisters and i had on vhs and we watched it constantly lol
Definitely my favorite prequel too
I actually enjoyed the sarcasm in this episode 😂 the counters got loaded
Funnily enough, there was a documentary last week in Quebec (where I live) about the 20th "anniversary" of the Star Wars Kid. The teen who was filmed doing the lightsaber battle is also from Quebec. A lawyer now, he talks about the impact this viral video - maybe the first viral video - had on his life.
Yes, it is good, but I came from a special place, the hype totally missed me, I played the PS1 game first, which was my first PS1 game, then for my graduation I asked for a full beer rack (24 bottles) after 6-8 bottles we started watching Episode 1 and I liked it XD
The goodthings: Qui Gon, politics, podracing, Duel of Fates. The awefullthings: midichlorians, Ani, Jake Lloyd was a huge miscast, he could have been much better in any other fun kids movie.
Oh my god. The tape of Tony reenacting Darth Maul was classssssssic
You guys did a good job reviewing the movie and trolling crazy Star Wars fanboys at the same time. That's surprisingly awesome.
This is legit the only one of the Prequels I liked. It’s the last movie in the franchise that still felt like a Star Wars movie before the franchise went to digital hell. I’m sure the thumbnail tag is a joke, but I stand by my statement.
I completely agree. I've said the same thing over and over again about this film.
The Phantom Menace has the 3 best things of the whole trilogy. Liam Neeson, Darth Maul and Pod racing. It's my favorite too... but it's still awful and the CG has aged horribly making it even worse than it was in 1999.
So you like this movie because of something so shallow like practical effects?
@@thomasffrench3639 That's just one example. There are more but I don't like to spend my day explaining myself to strangers.
@@markula_4040 Honestly the lightsaber triangle match at the end is hands down my favorite in the saga.
26:26 Actually, they landed on the _opposite_ side of the planet from the city they wanted to attack because Boss Nass tells them the fastest way to get there is through the planet core.
Really enjoyed this episode, love the show guys keep up the good work!!!
Yeah, this definitely sparked my interest in the series, I just watched it the other day, the nostalgia I get for this one is for real!!
It's great to see some 🖤 on "The Phantom Menace". I remmember watching It at the cinema. It's not as bad as everyone is saying. One of my favorite of the prequels, fantastic lightsaber battle at the end! and i'm always watching It on Laserdisc.
The fact that you made an entire video to sarcastically praise Episode 1 to spite people who think it’s good is seriously a chef kiss.
That Qui-Gon Jin voice sounded like Bane. 😉
Seeing you two play with toys makes my heart sing.
I love Natalie Portman and seeing her come back in Thor love and thunder will send me into the stratosphere.
I like the bit in this video when they're being sarcastic.......Just hilarious.......
Lil' late with the April Fools-ness...and yeah, I bought a ticket to Meet Joe Black to see this Episode One trailer on the big screen, and, yes, I walked out afterward. And for some god-forsaken reason, I saw the awful Phantom Menace in theaters 13 times, plus 1 for the 3D re-release...and I don't know why.
Man I love episodes with you guys together if I only got along with any of my exes like that still lol good shit fellas
Alien 3 👽👽👽
This is the new definition of tongue-in-cheek.
The DVD still had the Yoda puppet although it did extend some of the pod race like the introduction to the other racers and some(not all) of the cut footage from lap 2, CGI Yoda didn’t show up till the 2011 Blu-ray.
I like this movie, it's fun and with some friends, can be a very enjoyable time. I also think this movie lends itself well to video game adaptations, excited for the review Tony!
I'm pretty sure you guys meant to release this on April 1st right
I love the stated point of this Episode. Thank you Tony & Johanna.
great video amazing to think about this movie and the hype and impact it had on cinema and when I was 10 years old seeing it in cinemas for the first time with my father and the prequel trilogy movies
What is that movie next to the Austin Powers VHS on the left upper corner? The guy with sunglasses?
Found it. it was max headroom :)
before George specialeditionalized Episode I , it synched up with No Doubts' album , the Return of Saturn , their previous album syched up with the Wizard of Oz, for that movie start the album on repeat at the third roar of the MGM Lion . for this movie, i guess just start it at the 20th century Fox logo ?
Lol, ok you guys broke me I gotta tap. This episode needed better booking. I will come back when I am high . Love ya guys.
For the first time in awhile I have had the biggest nostalgia feeling. All the toys, posters etc. It was all over the place when those movies came out.
I was there in the old times, waiting in line before sunrise to see this movie.
That whole ending bit was worth this whole video lmao
In case you wonder, Qui Gon Jinn figure they unbox is listed on eBay for $4.97.
The fools! They never knew what they had!
“They’re still coming through!”
“This is impossi-bru!”
I still laugh at the voice that was chosen for viceroy Nute Gunray 🤣
Space Filipinos! Lol.
I drove myself and my friend to the midnight premier of Phantom Menace and went to a summer college class the next day.
I was 9 When this came out and I remember my dad taking me to see it on the last day of school. Ep1 has a special place in my ❤️
Fun review of you two playing with the toys, but I dunno if you both are being honest or just being sarcastic. I was waiting for Tony to yell " OKAY I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE!" then Tony rants lmao. I honestly didn't mind The Phantom Menace, it's good. The toys I thought were kinda lame when they came out, only one I wanted was Maul but he sold out.
I will never understand why channels like this are constantly getting copyright strikes when you're perfectly within the Fair Use Law... You're reviewing the movie, and adding commentary, and educating people... that makes any footage used within fair use... These movie studios need to learn.
Congratulations for inviting John Oliver to the show!! Tony, you must be extremely famous.
I remember at the time you go to somewhere to restaurants, gas stations or super markets it was everywhere and the Commercials, the Commercials were insane...oh Pepsi.
OMG Krystal busting in in her Poison from Final Fight cosplay is the HOTTEST thing on the internet.
1:13:41 reminds me of that time in elementary school when i was going to the bathroom but stopped to peak inside the special needs classroom
Happy April fools
Thank you, Tony, and also Johanna for giving Phantom Menace--the 2nd best Star Wars movie--a 2nd chance!
If this is the same irony that this video was founded on bravo. if not i dislike your face
On the distant planet of HACK THE TATTOOINE, Jedi masters Tony and Johanna review "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" before training Crystal in the ways of the Hack Force before Darth Joe arrives.
I watched one and two in theaters but I was able to watch revenge of the sith two weeks before it came out on theaters because when my family went on vacation to visit my uncle he somehow illegally downloaded it on the internet I was watching it that night in the hotel room and my mom kept yelling at me because I had it up so loud she was worried someone was going to hear it and call the cops on us I guess those public service announcements about stealing movies is wrong got to her
Finally! Tony has come to his senses! In all seriousness though, TPM isn’t as horrible as people make it out to be. I find AoTC to be more difficult to watch.

From like 2000-2001 every birthday sleep over this was the movie rented and played at
for some reason i thought the old woman that told Ani that a sandstorm was coming saw Qui gon's lightsaber ,and that she was either a Sith or a Jedi? that was hiding? i don't know
I had a 3CPO head that could record what you were saying in a lowest quality you can imagine and play it backwards
Dash Render would be proud....for a fee
I don't know if you still can but you used to be able to buy Song of the South in Disney Land Paris
When Phantom Menace came out I worked at a theater and was tasked with ensuring nobody recorded it during the 1st showing. Just as it started, I felt the force and knew something was wrong. Then the trade federation guy showed up. 🤨 Then Jar-Jar... 😱 Bickering in the senate...😴 Then Darth Maul happened!!! 😲👍
I've grown to appreciate the prequel trilogy. Now, I wonder if that will happen with the sequel trilogy?
We were like in 4th and 5th grade when this came out! XD
I was 4 in 1999. I obviously at that age could not understand AT ALL what was going on, but it was pretty cool how they made a double-saber that had jelly beans in the handle. Also at the time, I thought my dad was Batman, so how should I know if that candy saber was really cool or not?
I remember collecting all the pepsi/diet pepsi/mt dew etc cans with the characters on them lol also I LOVED Jim Jam Bonks cereal lol
Ralph Brown was the pilot on Naboo but he was also The Roadie in Wayne's World 2 ....
Haha been waiting for this one finnally
Yes the pilot guy is 85 from alien 3. I didn’t know about Kira knightly though. Did know about rose Byrne in episode 2.
I used to have the reader for the chips i remember it being pretty cool
"Newt is a coward?!" Totally not referring to any former HTM employees with that comment 😏
Nute* The viceroy of the trade federation.
I love how you guys nerded out on this one lol! Like even tho I know you were joking...I could totally see your inner child coming out when those toys came out! You guys actually had fun doin this one I could tell. Great review Hack the movies!
Crystal was still wearing her Tank Girl stuff.
Did anyone else think Queen Amidala gave Boss Nass a large boomba at the parade? Like she wanted to blow them up because she is secretly evil and that is why Anakin was attracted to her.
When ever Tony talks about Patreon, he reminds me of the character the cup he is drinking out of
I saw phantom menace twice in theaters i loved it as a kid
Take a look at Spaced series 2 episode 1, Tim gets fired from the comic book store he works at. When he's at the Job Centre to get some unemployment benefits, the woman asks "Because of Jar Jar?" Such a great scene!
“I loved sucking Jar-Jar’s tongue,” totally made be commit to watching all of this 😂
I saw this movie ten times in theater’s. I was a junior in high school and would skip to catch the matinee.
Johana's face at "you like to give blue balls" XD XD
Phantom Menace Review for my birthday!
best review so far
