Are you ready for World War 3, Civil War in America, hurricanes, earthquakes or general old-fashioned civil unrest? You should be! In this video I share with you the Baofeng AR-152 Tactical Emergency SHTF ham radio. I share some of the top features of this radio, I do a power output test, I compare the AR-152 to the Baofeng UV-5R radio, and I explain why the AR152 Baofeng HT is a great radio to use for SHTF, tactical communications or emergency radio communications use.

Baofeng radios should be called "Fisher Price." They are toys with very short range. I doubt they are transmitting the power out that their specs proclaim. They are like the toy walkie talkies we used to play with as kids in the 1970s. Actually, I think those toy walkie talkies are better than this Baofeng crap masquerading as a real radio. I am a licensed Ham radio operator (Amateur Extra class) and cannot take Baofeng seriously not matter how many people keep repeating the lie that they are good radios.

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  7 місяців тому +330

If you cant take them seriously, then why would you seek out and watch a video about them?
I use my Baofeng radios to transmit 13 miles to other HTs and 70 miles to a repeater, and according to my meters they all output within 1-watt of what is advertised. I guess there were no questions about actually knowing what you're talking about before making yourself look stupid on the internet on those fancy H.A.M. radio tests you took, eh?

hey, my first radio/talkie was a Fisher Price. CH06 of CB band, I remember trolling people with their CB, and it was even useful to listen to CB users on the road warning about the blues doing speed checks...So that's actually a good comparison, it's cheap, it communicates and even if it is cheap can do great stuff.
wow i cant believe i write all that about a radio i don't have, since i go with Retevis. But you get the idea.

Then you come along and show your ass to the internet. This is the first AR152 review in which someone ACTUALLY TURNED IT ON. All the Ham ones were just them making fun of it and explaining why it "must be junk" without ever turning it on. NS Scout and I use these teaching classes and they get wet, muddy, left out in the rain, and still work. Never had to change a battery during a weeklong class. (It was me that left one out in the rain - whiskey was involved)

Can't agree more. Just a few questions can get you access to the bands. Host falsely ignores that FCC regulates the bands, as much as we may despise the FCC. It does inform us on how we took different paths than the apes however. I wish that host had shared the splatter report on the buttfang radio, so we would know how to set the squelch on our Yaesu radios. I think Randy got rejected for a CB license when he was 12 years old... and held a lifelong grudge.
Personally I like meeting interesting people (not Randy) , legally, on 2 meters. 😄

One thing I have never understood why anyone would give out their call sign on UA-cam, have it on their license plates/window sticker, or at non ham related places. It screams something like "Hi my name is Brad A Kennelly and I live at 3943 Fox Creek Dr. in Kingwood TX and if you see me driving around, you know I'm not home please come rob me". That being said, image that... my call sign is KG5SYM too... what are the odds? Having a general ticket It's really cool hanging out on 80 meters in the 3.500-3.600 MHz: CW, RTTY/Data area rag chewing with the extra ticket people. There are good hams and bad ones. Conversely, there are smart, prudent hams and some that aren't.

I listen a lot before talking, and I'm glad for that. Once I did learn, I rewatched a few vids, and wound up laughing until I cried. Still all the great info, but now I can enjoy the humor (and the digs at the system) to a much better extent.

No, an "emergency" doesn't allow that. There must be imminent threat to life and property. Realistically speaking, a HT, regardless of power level, will be pretty useless for anything but short range communication, like chicken hawks running around in the woods playing Army. Baofeng and other companies recognize the fact that the "shtf" people are easy marks for this type of marketing. Cool-looking radio, though, and that should appeal to the wannabes.

AR-152 is certainly badass, but my issue with it is it's not entirely clear how dust and water resistant it is. I ended up getting a UV-9R Pro because it still does 8W but seems to be much more hardened against water and dust. Not nearly as big or has as big of a screen, but its profile is very similar to a UV-5R and it fits into most radio-specific MOLLE pouches quite nicely.

Your description of antenna feed line loss is both accurate and hysterical. Proff sometimes climbing a tree can be better than hanging feedline of a perfect rf radiating device.

So, I’ve had this radio for maybe a month now. This thing is a beast. And forget what wfjifcy, or whatever his name is, says. It isn’t a toy Walkie. I’ve used those toys, and this is head and shoulders above. I can hit a repeater, and talk through it, that is at least 8 miles away, through trees on the east coast. Heavy tree cover. But not with the stock antenna. I had to put the Nagoya on. But mid conversation. The stock was working, barely, at that range. The Nagoya cleared up reception on the other end quite well.
It’s heavy, so better for non-hiking. But dang… it certainly works.

Thanks 😊for the review. I have this
HT for some time now. It's OK, and
has many of the characteristics of
the Baofeng's similar HT's, with some
    receiver shortcomings of Baofeng HT's.
It has a little more power output too,
with the bigger battery, looking like
    a tactical type HT. 73 de W2CH Ray.😊

I absolutely love your videos! You’re soooo funny!!!! And the way you say “boof-wang” is hysterical!😂😂 You say it that way just to get a rise from the sad hams! I’ve had my technician license since 2017 and I’ve NEVER talked to anyone ever here in Northwest Oregon. I personally think amateur radio is dead and buried! And the ham radio that the sad hams say is still alive is for senior citizens late at night or for those boring weekend groups. I own the Boofwang UV-82HP and the UV-5R which are sweet little radios if someone actually responded to my shoutouts. The antennas I purchased for them costs more than the Boofwangs! Last month I purchased my GMRS license and bought two Boofwang GM-15 Pro radios, one for my wife and one for me. But I tried reaching out to touch someone but just like vhf uhf radio, GMRS radio seems pretty dead here in the Pacific Northwest. That radio you’re reviewing looks sweet and I would definitely use it for ham and GMRS frequencies but it’s pretty pointless if you’re the only one using it.
