I've watched a lot of the early shows on UA-cam. For the most part, it's phenomenal, however; I'm not thinking Steve Vai is quite where he needs to be yet. His style is sooo "stunt guitar"...almost the opposite of Robert Fripp. All of the other members, even Danny Carey, are doing just fine. This jury member is still out on Vai.
They only had a week's rehearsal. Vai is getting his thing dailed in more each gig. DC mentioned to me it would probably take 4 or 5 nights to lock them all. I actually really appreciate Vai's taking his parts to places Fripp didn't. His solo in Sheltering Sky is nuts
@@PeterGrenader Watching videos of the first 3 shows, you can see Vai starting to perform the parts, not just play them. In about a week these guys guys will start dropping some absolute monster shows. DC swings more than BB did, and that's a lovely feel.
@@PeterGrenader I thought they had been rehearsing longer than that. Still, taking solos to places Fripp didn't go kinda defeats the whole Fripp vibe. There are thousands of guitarists that can soar like eagles, but Fripp's style was(is) very cerebral. I've never particularly liked Fripp's style, but if you're gonna take a Crimson-esque show on the road, you should have a guitarist that is closer to Fripp's mannerisms and quirks. But, I'm staying tuned...hopefully, as you say, Vai will begin to "feel" Fripp a little better.
