Post WW2 1945 Nazi Germany Allied Occupation of Berlin

  • On the 6th May 1945, Major Kirke B. Lawton received special permission for a special ceremony: at the Allied headquarters in Reims, the Wehrmacht signed the unconditional surrender on all fronts. The Second World War in Europe ended two days later. In London, people celebrate in the streets - just like in the Netherlands and Czechoslovakia. In Augsburg, a team from "Special Film Project 186" films the defeated, among them Hitler's second in command, Hermann Göring.
    When US troops conquer Nazi Germany from the West in March 1945, camera teams follow them, documenting the defeated and occupied country. The special feature: they shoot in 16mm color. The result is unique film footage of the destroyed cities and their inhabitants, but also depressing images of the victims of terror and the policy of extermination.

      His initial American captors treated him with a celebrity-like respect, which he also thought was forthcoming because he had a big ego. Soon thereafter, a higher-up authority, reprimanded his subordinates and reminded him that he was a war criminal, who would soon face trial. The films you see of Goring, casually strolling around, is just from those moments, before the true gravity of his captivity would "hit him in the face." And of course, we know how the story ends!

    Concentration camps in Germany were not only the Holocaust understood as the extermination of the Jewish population, they were also concentration camps exterminating Poles, Belarussians, Russians, Czechs, French, Dutch, and Belgians, all occupied continental Europe. It is also necessary to mention the German prisoner of war camps for Soviet prisoners of war, which were in fact death concentration camps.

    The concentration camps were not a complete surprise to allied governments when their armies encountered them. The troops on the ground had no idea about the horrors they were about to face -- but allied intelligence became aware of the camps, their purpose and the massive number of prisoners being sent to them, earlier in the war. FDR was urged to bomb the rail lines sending prisoners to the camps to disrupt what we now know as the holocaust. He refused! The reason is he didn't want the war, and the sacrifices those in the allied countries were making, to be perceived as a project for helping Jews. Antisemitism was prevalent in the world & controlling information available, and ensuring the public was absolutely 100% behind the goals of the war effort was a major factor in decision making. There are so many ugly aspects of the war.

      Well, for one, France did play a important role in WW2 (Gustav-Line, e.g.) and because maintaining an occupation zone was not as easy at it may sound. Considering France had also played a key role during WW1 and the Versailles Treaty of 1918/1918, the Allied Forces decided to also include France.

    • @workingmansblues
      @workingmansblues 10 днів тому

      You obviously don't know your history. The Free French Forces landed on Swords Beach with the British. They also landed in North Africa and fought in the Vichy gouverned countries. They landed in Provence a few days after D-Day to start a second front. A French armored division entered Paris before the other allies and found it liberated by the resistance and the Parisian people. They invaded Germany with the other allies. Please open a book before commenting.

    I have seen this footage of Goering many times. Notice the many microphones and reporters taking notes. I have never heard an audio recording or read a transcript. To the best of my knowledge, one does not exist. I wonder what Goering had to say that has been scrubbed from History... Also, all of the video is taken from silent films with no audio track. Adding a narrative detracts from them; it does not enhance anything. Indeed, it can give rise to questions about why manipulation would seem desirable, and to what end.

      @@anthonydoyle7370 Thank you for your comment! I'm a German and Ex-Berliner.That's why I was particularly keen to see footage of post-war Berlin. It may be as you say, but I still don't understand why they used such a misleading title for this video. By the way, I experienced post-war Berlin in the 60s. Back then you could still see the devastating war damage. Huge areas in the city center, where life once pulsated, were simply wasteland, a surreal sight, hardly imaginable today. I was hoping to see pictures to accompany the stories of my mother, who experienced the end of the war in Berlin as a 14-year-old girl. Once she was almost shot by a Russian machine gunner. Another time she narrowly escaped being raped. It was also common for allied fighter planes to fly low into the very wide streets and shoot at anything that moved. But fortunately that is history and Berlin has recovered. This was clearly visible when King Charles was recently received by the German President at the Brandenburg Gate. -- Cheers!

      ...THAT'S TOO GODDAM BAD!!! WHEN YOU START A MAJOR WAR AND THEN LOSE IT- YOU CAN EXPECT UNPLEASANT CONSEQUENCES!!!
      AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED 1- ALL THAT THE GERMANS GOT WAS A GODDAM GOOD TASTE OF THEIR OWN MEDICINE, AND 2- THE GERMANS DIDN'T SUFFER NEARLY ENOUGH FOR ALL OF THE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION THAT THEY INFLICTED ON THE REST OF THE WORLD!!!
      GIVE IT UP- ALL YOU'RE DOING IS EMBARRASSING YOURSELF ON THE INTERNET!!!

    This is a bit off the cuff.But whenever I see the German high command in this footage in their crisp spanking Military Uniforms,I flash back to the comments made by several Holocaust survivors. Our 6th grade class class got to meet several dozen Holocaust survivors throughout that school year. As many survived the brutality of the cattle cars that transported them to Auschwitz.The first thing that caught the eye of many of the young girls was the immaculate German Uniforms.From head to toe. And these then young ladies noted how extraordinarily handsome some of these men were. After all they were still teenagers going through puberty. Still naive about what other human beings are capable of. Their fascination didn't last long.Because these same Germans acted like savages as soon as the people were off the trains.Once the shock of the beatings wore off.There were the selections. To the left.To the right. I won't go into detail but some of the infants were ripped from the arms of their mothers. By some of these same very handsome men in their immaculate Uniforms.Killing the infants with their bare hands. On the spot.To say looks were deceiving in this case is a gross understatement.
