My spindle didn't survive the Jacksonville winter this year. However my bottles did I have them in a huge pot and I stored them in the garage when the temp dipped.

You didnt talk about pruning the base of debris, its very hard and cutting them with a knife can damage the inner trunk???

It's possible to hurt the base but unlikely. It's not a bad idea!

IMO it is best to wait and as the trunk swells they will remove easily with age.

When I moved into my house in 2009 I had 3 bottle palms and I got hand pruners and just cut them off and they look a lot bitter 🙃
