You have to go to school to learn the way characters in anime and manga speak. So you can’t *technically* learn it from manga/anime, but you can learn words and phrases. I started off watching anime and learning basic words and phrases, but you actually need to deep dive into learning apps or novels and documentaries (or anything that speaks normally) to learn the actual language. If you talk in the way anime characters talk in Japan, you’re bound to get made fun of lmao

You can learn how to speak like that from watching anime and reading manga, sure, of course, but you can’t learn actual Japanese grammar, etc from just manga and anime. Man, all of my broken Japanese are from anime. I can understand and speak some very basic level Japanese, but not read. I'm still memorizing all the Katakana and Hiragana atm. And yes, watching anime can help you learn Japanese but if you wanna be proficient in it, also try to watch it without subtitles sometimes it can help you understand the languages better. All of this is from my personal experience watching anime and SOMEHOW can speak and understand very basic level Japanese. Kanji is outta question atm
i watched a bunch of content in japanese without subs it's true, i know people with a bigger vocab than i have that can't understand spoken japanese cause they never really sat down to listen to it lmao and reading speads up your language acquistion by A LOT
I think anime is also really good because when you dub it in any language it still works because the mouths talking are only animated opening and closing, so if you don’t look too close it looks like they’re actually speaking the language of the dub. I get really bothered watching live action shows when the lips moving don’t line up with the audio, so anime is a life saver :)
I actually used conprehensible input to learn english from the start i knew a bit of english but watching reddit videos made my vocabulary wayyy bigger and started to use english more than spanish since you can express yourself more
There's an Anki add-on called Jlab that has a premade deck with thousands of anime examples, and the add-on itself let's you import full decks from thousands of other series. Definitely helps you get to the B1+ stage easier.

@@N-Ice_ I'd recommend to focus only in imput skills first, and when you feel you're confortable with the language, the go for output skills, that's what I did, but speak (pronunciation) is something I don't really try to improve that much

It's not like I did know it won't be easy, but I speak Russian and Latvian along with English, all three have different alphabets and I know all three. But problem is that Japanese have way more to learn there, and drawing and memorizing them is different from normal one's...

I had an adiction for reading manhwa, I read about one thousand chapters in english, I noticed a huge improvement, thank u tower of god for taught me english xD
Great video man. The problem i found is that the dubbed anime on netflix and the subtitles are different. Its super frustrating. If they were matched up it would make my life soooo much easier. They read off different scripts so what you hear and read are 2 different translations rendering it almost useless. Sure the dubs are good but to have the actual subs....way better
I frickin agree i learned so much thru anime and manga at first i didnt even have any intentions to learn the language but like soon after, i realized that i could understand the language OFC I HAD TO LEARN SOME MORE WORDS AND LIKE THE BASICS its just that anime made it so much easier for me i could understand the like other words but just wanted to learn more Oh btw i realized that i could understand it cuz like one day i was watching kinda like a japanese vid and it didnt have any subtitles but i still wanted to watch it and to my suprise I UNDERSTOOD IT
The annoying thing about watching anime though in your target language is the subtitles are usually different to what is being said. I've been watching some anime in german with subtitles and half of the time what they say isn't what the subtitles are. It makes it super annoying cause your not hearing what your reading.
Watching anime hasn’t taught me how to fluently speak Japanese, but it’s made me able to say the words correctly, and not sound like a complete foreigner. So that is cool.
When I was learning english I watched Anime (Still doing it) (FMA brotherhood was the first anime I watched in english even though I can't understand everything) and now I am using Anime per imparare italiano.
Do you have any more advice on finding shows with subtitles matching audio? It's a nightmare when it comes to dubbed content, and in a few languages I study the native content I can find with matching subtitles is either too advanced or uninteresting.
When I was a kid, I was visiting family abroad and came across Inuyasha in Spanish while skimming through the channels. (I was not in a country where Spanish was the native language, which still has me confused to this day -- all the anime and also the French 'n Canadian cartoons were in Spanish????) I loved Inuyasha, so every time I saw it on the air I'd watch it, even though I was really young and didn't know any Spanish at that time. I came out of it learning a good amount of words and now honestly can't watch the show in English or Japanese 'cause I've reprogrammed myself to think Aome (Kagome) is Latina now haha. I really enjoy Latin American Spanish dubs. They seem to be more loyal to the source material (compared to the English version) and the voice acting always seem to fit the characters.
Wow thank's for sharing that advice with us. I didn't knew the Language Reactor plugin but it's worth gold! Further about the motivation part. What you are talking about there is compelling input. So the sweet spot is when the comprehensible input you consume is at the same time compelling.

I watched all seasons of the Office when I first started learning Spanish, and even though I hardly understood any words I understood soo much just from expressions, tones and actions of the characters. In hindsight I should have just learned a bunch of words first before going in to it
I laughed about the nerd comments, since I rewatch BBC Merlin in every language I am learning. 🤣 I like to watch many shows in my target languages to go with my textbook/flashcard learning. One episode a night until I realize I am understanding the show! Yay!
Idea is great. I used manga to learn Italian and it worked perfectly. But now I'm learning Norwegian and I can't find manga in this language. I found only few titles in paper version which are extremely expensive to buy and even more expensive to ship to my country :(

If I really wanted to I would've learned Japanese decades ago because Anime was something that I watched daily as a child. So this is why although I can't speak Japanese or Korean I know which one is which based on the sound because Anime and K Drama. That being said I also know how Cantonese sounds like because I've been exposed to it, my tutor used to speak Cantonese with her family and I heard it everyday for at least 5 years, and since I speak Mandarin and Hokkien I won't confuse them from each other. The point is passive learning is a huge jump if you suddenly wanted to actively learn a language. I recently did a video explaining how I progressed in Portuguese and it was significantly faster VS my Russian and my theory is that if I wanted to actively learn Japanese or Korean it would be faster than Russian (only for me) because of my years of passive input in Japanese and Korean. With Russian I needed 3 months (probably more I'm still at this point of my journey) of deliberate passive exposure to compensate for the years I had exposure with Portuguese via capoeira classes, even if I am actively learning Eu Portuguese instead of Br Portuguese. So anyway each language would be different for each person depending on their background so don't compare yourself to others.
I've been wanting to watch Animes in Spanish but some reason I can't ever get the correct subtitles. Whenever I try to watch anything that is not originally in Spanish on Netflix or any other streaming site like Amazon Prime, I get subtitles that are a little different. Anyone else have that same problem? Also, I always try to make sure both the subtitles and voice are in Latin American Spanish, but I'm still having the same issue. Any help would be appreciated.
I've been learning Spanish and Portuguese myself and I also bumped into the same problem. The way I do it is by having native speakers make the script for the anime I like. Another option is watching shows with subtitles made by AI. Like the ones on UA-cam with subtitles. But I don't use them because they're inaccurate and missing in so many places. You can find native speakers who would do the job with relatively low rates on freelance websites, like Upwork. Good luck! Oh, and most of anime are dubbed in latin american spanish anyway so I don't see the problem there.
Ikenna! I’ve been reading manga, manwha, and manhua but I haven’t learned much, although I’ve read some really good ones such as solo leveling, beginning after the end, sword glory, and nano machine etc etc. all of which is phenomenal.
Before I went to Germany for the first time of my life, I watched 54 episodes of Digimon 01 for three times and then I found that I could understand German in normal speed, not just textbook speed. Then when I went to Germany, I could start to communicate in German effortlessly two weeks. (I had A2 level before that) Now eight years have passed, I am repeating the same thing for Italian (which I started to learn a month ago and just finished all Duolingo lessons) except I use Stein Gates this time because I could find video sources for both Italian subs and dubs. I combined them together. Of course I have to manually handle the video audio sync for each video which is a pain in the ass. I'm a Cantonese native speaker and Japanese should be easy, but I was stuck in N3 (B1) which I marginally passed and I started to have contact with the Japanese language since I was in grade 8 (now I'm 28). At the same time my German and Russian have long surpassed that level.
For Italian you can find basically any film or serie translated into it with extreme ease (and at a certain point you'll start recognising the dubbers, as they're all the same)
Been watching anime a lot lately and with no Japanese learning from apps or anything like that, from the top of my head I know words like: tomodachi = friend ohayo(gozaimasu) = good morning gomen(asai) *or* sumimasen = I'm sorry *or* sorry mina = everyone watashino = mine *or* my watashiwa = I (as in 'myself') hai *or* iya = Yes iiya = No And put together sentences with these words, like: gomenasai, mina: I'm really sorry, everyone. watashino tomodachi: My friend. ohayogozaimasu, mina: Good morning, everyone. I can also read a lot of hiragana and katakana from Japanese subtitles, like all of the basic singular vowels, a, i, u, e, o, from hiragana and katakana. I know how to pronounce any with Dakuon as well. So, anime DEFINITELY does something.

I'm learning Japanese. I've been learning it since 2015. Anime and manga are pretty much my main method of Japanese input. I used to study Spanish when I was younger but I abandoned it because I like anime more than Spanish TV. I couldn't find any shows from Latin America that interested me. Mexican soap operas are really dumb. I figured if I want to learn a language I have to ONLY pick media that was ORIGINALLY in my target language. But now I realize... wait... why should that matter? I enjoy anime in Japanese so why shouldn't I be able to enjoy it in other languages I want to learn?
I generally take liek 3-4 days of studying basic grammar and vocab, then inputs 24/7 and Google translate to be sure I got the right meaning if a specific word or to see if the sentences I produce in the target language make sense (doesn't work with every language tho cuz Google translate suck)

Like he said, there are plenty of people recommend to watch with the same language of sub and dub. But if that's what works for you, go for it!!

I improved my listening a lot by watching lots of animes without subtitles (English in this case)

Ones ability to learn language seems to be synonimous with not giving up when drowning in an abyss of things you don’t understand.
I watched all seasons of the Office when I first started learning Spanish, and even though I hardly understood any words I understood soo much just from expressions, tones and actions of the characters. In hindsight I should have just learned a bunch of words first before going in to it

Idea is great. I used manga to learn Italian and it worked perfectly. But now I'm learning Norwegian and I can't find manga in this language. I found only few titles in paper version which are extremely expensive to buy and even more expensive to ship to my country :(

If I really wanted to I would've learned Japanese decades ago because Anime was something that I watched daily as a child. So this is why although I can't speak Japanese or Korean I know which one is which based on the sound because Anime and K Drama. That being said I also know how Cantonese sounds like because I've been exposed to it, my tutor used to speak Cantonese with her family and I heard it everyday for at least 5 years, and since I speak Mandarin and Hokkien I won't confuse them from each other. The point is passive learning is a huge jump if you suddenly wanted to actively learn a language. I recently did a video explaining how I progressed in Portuguese and it was significantly faster VS my Russian and my theory is that if I wanted to actively learn Japanese or Korean it would be faster than Russian (only for me) because of my years of passive input in Japanese and Korean. With Russian I needed 3 months (probably more I'm still at this point of my journey) of deliberate passive exposure to compensate for the years I had exposure with Portuguese via capoeira classes, even if I am actively learning Eu Portuguese instead of Br Portuguese. So anyway each language would be different for each person depending on their background so don't compare yourself to others.

I've been wanting to watch Animes in Spanish but some reason I can't ever get the correct subtitles. Whenever I try to watch anything that is not originally in Spanish on Netflix or any other streaming site like Amazon Prime, I get subtitles that are a little different. Anyone else have that same problem? Also, I always try to make sure both the subtitles and voice are in Latin American Spanish, but I'm still having the same issue. Any help would be appreciated.
I've been learning Spanish and Portuguese myself and I also bumped into the same problem. The way I do it is by having native speakers make the script for the anime I like. Another option is watching shows with subtitles made by AI. Like the ones on UA-cam with subtitles. But I don't use them because they're inaccurate and missing in so many places.
You can find native speakers who would do the job with relatively low rates on freelance websites, like Upwork.

Before I went to Germany for the first time of my life, I watched 54 episodes of Digimon 01 for three times and then I found that I could understand German in normal speed, not just textbook speed. Then when I went to Germany, I could start to communicate in German effortlessly two weeks. (I had A2 level before that)
Now eight years have passed, I am repeating the same thing for Italian (which I started to learn a month ago and just finished all Duolingo lessons) except I use Stein Gates this time because I could find video sources for both Italian subs and dubs. I combined them together. Of course I have to manually handle the video audio sync for each video which is a pain in the ass.
I'm a Cantonese native speaker and Japanese should be easy, but I was stuck in N3 (B1) which I marginally passed and I started to have contact with the Japanese language since I was in grade 8 (now I'm 28). At the same time my German and Russian have long surpassed that level.
For Italian you can find basically any film or serie translated into it with extreme ease (and at a certain point you'll start recognising the dubbers, as they're all the same)

Been watching anime a lot lately and with no Japanese learning from apps or anything like that, from the top of my head I know words like:
tomodachi = friend
ohayo(gozaimasu) = good morning
gomen(asai) *or* sumimasen = I'm sorry *or* sorry
mina = everyone
watashino = mine *or* my
watashiwa = I (as in 'myself')
hai *or* iya = Yes
iiya = No
And put together sentences with these words, like:
gomenasai, mina: I'm really sorry, everyone.
watashino tomodachi: My friend.
ohayogozaimasu, mina: Good morning, everyone.
I can also read a lot of hiragana and katakana from Japanese subtitles,
like all of the basic singular vowels, a, i, u, e, o, from hiragana and katakana.
I know how to pronounce any with Dakuon as well.
So, anime DEFINITELY does something.
"Mina" generally means "Guys" not everyone, it can also mean "People".

I'm learning Japanese. I've been learning it since 2015. Anime and manga are pretty much my main method of Japanese input.
I used to study Spanish when I was younger but I abandoned it because I like anime more than Spanish TV.
I couldn't find any shows from Latin America that interested me. Mexican soap operas are really dumb.
I figured if I want to learn a language I have to ONLY pick media that was ORIGINALLY in my target language.
But now I realize... wait... why should that matter?
I enjoy anime in Japanese so why shouldn't I be able to enjoy it in other languages I want to learn?

I generally take liek 3-4 days of studying basic grammar and vocab, then inputs 24/7 and Google translate to be sure I got the right meaning if a specific word or to see if the sentences I produce in the target language make sense (doesn't work with every language tho cuz Google translate suck)
