As I listened to this I wondered how many recording projects by Brian and The Beach Boys went unreleased and became gifts to the bootleg industry, or are otherwise missing in action somewhere in the world? 1-Smile 2-Live 1967 3-Landlocked 4-Live with Chicago 1975 6-California Feeling 7-Adult Child unreleased 8-1982 sessions with Dennis Wilson 9-1986-solo Brian sessions with Gary Usher 10-Sweet Insanity 11-1995 aborted album with The Beach Boys 12-'2008 'Summer's Gone' a suite of material that would have gone on 'That's Why God Made The Radio' that there is little known about beyond that there were 28 songs that Brian demoed for that album and little is known about what was not released, finally 13-the Jeff Beck recording session. Brother Records Inc had a strong hand in ten out of thirteen of these recordings not being released.
Man, I only knew about some of these. Never even heard of the Jeff Beck sessions or Summers Gone tracks. Has anybody heard these? Also are the solo sessions with Gary Usher you’re referring to the Andy Paley sessions? Or are those separate tracks?
According to Wiki; “Sweet Insanity was critically panned by those who heard the record at the time. One of the few writers who enjoyed the album was music journalist Bill Holdship, who, in 1991, praised Sweet Insanity as "a wonderful album" and an improvement upon Brian Wilson. Holdship later reported that Wilson's fans were angered by the favorable review and sent Holdship several death threats in response.”
Gary Usher and Brian worked on this album for almost a year at Garys studio. Gary probably considered the recordings as pre-face before the final studio recordings which never happened. Every thing was going fine until Landy started to interfer, re-writing lyrics etc. At the end Gary could´t take anymore from Landy and left the project. Really sad because the are many great songs here, still unreleased.
Much of this great -- it does have a nearly lethal dose of late ‘80’s production elements- the drum programming and thin sounding synths- but he is really singing here, letting it go, Some just-about-classic quality songs with some great arrangements.
Left to his own devices, Brian can single-handedly 'work' the studio like an instrument. He can be a bit off-the-wall lyrically, but the worst thing about this album is the engineering. It's 'thin' sounding....a bit over-EQ'd, and probably the engineer was trying to make it sound like everything else on the radio.
This is a terrific album and I have no idea why this wasn't released. Completely BRILLIANT!!!! Brian's BEST solo effort. Even the silly rap thing is obviously done as a tongue-in-cheek send up with great drop in mixes of BB songs. Again, terrific FUN FUN FUN. Thanks for posting.
Leaving _Brian Wilson Presents Smile_ aside, it's Brian Wilson's best solo effort by a country mile. Those who criticize it for being overproduced or tacky overlook the fact that pretty much everything Wilson has done is a mixture of brilliance, eccentricity, schmaltz, and pathos. All of those attributes are present in all their glory here. Even better, there's a sense of enthusiasm and self-assurance in this album that hadn't been heard since _The Beach Boys Love You_ and hasn't really been heard from Wilson since.
Personally I think this is a very strong album. I can totally see '65/'66 Brian singing Don't Let Her Know She's An Angel, and Waters Build Up is one of the most infectious songs I've ever heard. Don't understand why people shit on this one.
The final unreleased version of _Sweet Insanity_ is his best solo album, certainly better than the one that preceded it, and far stronger than the post-_Smile_ Beach Boys material, with the exception of some of the songs on _15 Bigs Ones_, _Love You_, and _That's Why God Made the Radio_. (There are a few other gems, like "Busy Doin'' Nothin" and the _Adult/Child_ demos.) The criticisms leveled at this record--cheesy production, weak lyrics, and a feeling of desperately trying to follow fashion--apply just as much to the pretty much the entire Beach Boys catalog and Wilson's other solo material.
I’m usually interested in but not impressed by (sometimes even totally turned off by) all the out of print/unreleased beach boys and friends recordings but I was shocked to see that this is more interesting and lively than a lot of Brian’s actually official released solo material. Strange.
By crikey, this could be a million and two seller, by crikey. Just need to discard 'rainbow eyes.' Everything else is really cool. Wonder how many other trinkets Brian has in the vaults....
this is a great record’ brian’s arrangements are all over this record. it surprises me that it wasn’t released when pitched’ ... you have to listen deep.

Have listened to about five tracks and regardless of criticism about sound quality the songs so far sound easily up to standard and when I think of the time and trouble that Brian must have taken over these tracks its non release must have hurt him
There's actually a song called sweet Insanity that Brian recorded with his daughter Carly and now it's impossible to find. It is a brilliant song that was on a compilation album.
I remastered this album for UA-cam, taking out some of the high-end and adding more low-end: ua-cam.com/video/MmJTSzPuM8A/v-deo.html . I might remaster other '80s tracks from Brian, soon, including the full version of "Concert Tonight" you mentioned, and upload more onto UA-cam.
Totally agree. Most of these songs reveal the real Brian much more than those on No Pier Pressure, for instance. A better lyricist and a good, sympathetic outside producer could have made this a good album despite Doc Landy's omnipresence at the time.
Can't agree on that one. 'The Beach Boys Love You' is a far stronger album than this one, and quite frankly, I can see why the record company passed on this collection of weak songs. While the arrangements are fine, the lyrics are so childlike that they reach the point of embarrassment. Coming right after Brian's outstanding self-titled solo debut, this indeed would have been a disappointing follow-up. Now...'Adult/Child'...THAT'S the one I want to see get an official release. That's a terrific album that should not be in the vaults any longer.
Exactly what I was thinking.Wonder what this album would have sounded like if the studio people had locked Dr. Landy out of the recording studio & left Brian alone to his own devices.
Actually not as bad as I was lead to believe. Even the admittedly bad rapper Smart Girls gives the album an edge over the slick, bloodless travesty of 1998's Imagination. Don't Let Her Know She's an Angel, Rainbow Eyes and Make a Wish were redone for 2004's. Gettin' In Over My Head (his best solo release). Hope this gets an official release soon!
It's Brian on cocaine, and with an awful "doctor" preparing his doses. In other words--if BW sounds like this all drugged up and wasted, IMAGINE THE GOOD STUFF
Please someone help me find a song by Brian called Sweet Insanity. Perhaps a different title? He did the song with his daughters around 1990. The lyrics are sanity is reality, I love my sanity. It's an amazing song but I'm just not sure of the title. And I just can't find it in my collection. Does anyone out there know what I'm talking about
Even with the bad songs ("Brian", "Smart Girls", "Rainbow Eyes"), this STILL would have been a better album than Imagination and...I'll say it...No Pier Pressure. This nutty collection is far more interesting than either of those over-polished albums. Even with Landy still functioning as puppetmaster, far more of the real Brian comes through on these songs than most of his solo career. Too bad an outside producer couldn't have whipped these tracks into something even better.
It would have been nice if you labeled the songs in a list....so we know what song we're listening to......this sounds like craziness lol. L0v3 !T!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, had this been recorded by the Beach Boys + Brian, instead of the dreadful Summer in paradise, and without the over-echo sound, and not sounding so 80's, I am pretty sure it could have been a success. The songs here are just amazing, a million times better than SIP... You may disagree, but really, how many times have you listened to SIP and enjoyed it?? I mean c'mon, Rainbow eyes, Brian, Do you have any regrets, Someone to love, Don't let her know she's an angel.... Phew... 💯🎵🎶❤️
Don't Let Her Know isn't bad at all. The lyrics could use some polishing, but many BW lyrics do. Dare I say it: maybe Mike Love could have worked up something better for the lyrics.
Covered my eye at the start of heard BW rap but by the end was very impressed with the arrangement of that smart girls track. If you compare it to what other mainstream artists who were trying to embrace Hip hop at the time with mixed results like Quincy Jones Micheal Jackson and Prince...this isnt a bad effect by all means ...apart from the rapping (enter Jonah Hill hand to the neck meme)
Honestly I don't think it's a BAD album.. actually, aside from the f'n awful Brian/Thank You song and Smart Girls it's okay.. not as good as the first solo album but at least on par with Gettin' in Over My Head.
