Smiley Smile is perhaps one of the biggest oddities in all of pop music, to me. Almost more than Smile itself. It’s like, “we couldn’t finish Smile, so let’s try to make it again, but downscaled, but also with tapes that were already going to be on Smile anyways, but also with completely new songs that are also downscaled.”

As a lover of SMiLE and Smiley Smiley I must say that this is one of the most creative remixes of the album and it will be on my top 3 for sure,I'm in awe congratulations!
@bytesurfer8651 It's a great chill out album with some their best vocals, and canonized the kind of pulled back lo-fi sound which is beloved in indie music to this day. It's undeniably one of The Beach Boys' most influential records if you ask me (and might be my favorite of their post-Pet Sounds albums).
Imagine they successfully released SMiLE, and subsequently released this version of Smiley Smile as some cool bonus EP. How sick would that have been? Would’ve just been further proof of Brian’s genius as he was able to reinterpret a whole album in a completely different way from the original.
I 100% agree. Not a diss, cuz it’s fun to do SMiLE bootleg type mixes of all the BB albums that contain SMiLE songs. It’s a tradition. But I know exactly what you mean this isn’t “almost SMiLE”…..it’s “Smiley, Smiley Smile”….
It's like I always say... Smile! Even a fake one can be contagious and make you feel awesome. Damn that ginger flop Mike Love and his half ass dop wop BS... Bill cap wearing, dancing like a palsied arthritic scarecrow, unable to see art beyong getting a nut in the rumble seat of a 32 coupe. Poor Brian's... Brian Wilson and Jones... Jones took a dive and Wilson seems like he was with Dean Torrance at Dead Man's Curve, both talking like a salute psychotropics... none of them made it out of the 60s, really. Foster the dreamers... or they will flare out dramatically. Burning up on re-entry... a quick flash... and all that flashes turns to ashes, then surrenders to the night. And goodnight.
Amazing! This Worms mix is revelatory. But I was definitely expecting the version of Our Prayer with the laughter at the end, would fit the spirit of smiley smile
Nicely done. Really love the Do You Like Worms remix. I always thought there were elements of what became With Me Tonight and Whistle In in there. Great work!
Outstanding sir! To me, this is even more satisfying than Smile in its original form - it has a more earthy feel and you can appreciate the incredible vocals that much more. And, Carl’s vocals on Good Vibrations are so beautiful and pure - I still miss him terribly.
Pretty cool! One of the best Smile compilations, the sheer creativity shines through. Nice idea in blending With Me Tonight with Do You Like Worms, never thought that those songs might've been connected in some way.
Hi Jon, this was very nicely done. I would love to have heard "Gettin' Hungry" mixed in somehow. One of my favorite songs from "Smiley Smile". Love how you mixed "With Me Tonight" with "Do You Like Worms". "Good Vibrations" sounds more trippy and laid back. Thank you for posting this!
absolutely amazing, thank you ! Having listened from the very start to SS, and the bits and pieces of Smile over the years, released and bootleg, this has such an intimate in studio feel. I can't begin to say how much I enjoyed it. Thanks again !
Nice job Jon. I’ve fooled around with the same concept, trying to incorporate Smile bits and pieces that fit the Smiley aesthetic to flesh out the all too brief album. I particularly liked the stripped down Cabinessence. For Cool cool Water I use the first version recorded during the Smiley sessions, and the first Jan 67 Eat a Lot as part of a suite with the April Child and the Wonderful tag ( “mama mama mama”). the different versions of With Me Tonight are short interlude tracks and a reprise. I miss She’s Goin Bald though - an actual Smile piece reimagined as a Smiley track.
I like this better than BWPS and Smile Sessions because it seems more realistic what would of been released in 1967. An LP in 1967 would have been about 12 songs and 40 minutes max, this fits that & in the process cuts out a lot of stuff that was no were near finished. If this listing got made into a vinyl I'd buy it
What could have been! This actually would have been epic but they weren't really stoked about this stuff and Brian checked out I guess. Smiley Smile could have been really cool and perhaps they would have had some success.
Love this, I imagine finding it in record stores in ‘67 … re-titled as something like SATIVA BEACH … or maybe Indica Beach is more fitting. Beach Boys remain near the top throughout the late sixties, a better world for all.
This is extremely interesting and beautifully done. I'm that one guy who has never been a fan of the Smiley Smile album- to me, it's (at best) kind of like listening to everybody over-giggling at a joke you didn't get. And I'm sorry I don't get it, because so many people I esteem do. But this- to me- has a much better spirit and focus, and right off the bat I like this version of "Heroes" better than the first-released version, which I've always found grating. SMiLE never came out of the oven; Smiley was served nearly raw- this finds a lot of great space between. (But boy, would this have been a knuckleball in 1967! Even Captain Beefheart would have been befuddled).
I absolutely love this mix! The Do You Like Worms and Child is Father of the Man mixes are simply incredible. I noticed the similarity between With Me Tonight and DYLW, but never noticed All Day and the Hawaiian chants. I must ask though - why didn't you use Mike Leroy's vocals for DYLW? I think they would have sounded better than 2004 Brian. Would it be possible to get a .flac file of this?
Yes, yes. As I am totally obsessed with Anonymuse' s "Smile" job this feels like a great relief, a holiday indeed. Let's go away for a while, away from "Smile" and feel free forever. Low-key and weird, yes, it works. Thank you, Sir Jon. Jon Hunt? Sounds so familiar!
After this low-key and weird upload appeared about a year ago, many surprises followed. Unnecessary to drop names. But boy oh boy, how great is this. I can't believe it. Stop hunting for the newest, and celebrate an anniversary by listening non-stop, again and again. This must be the cornerstone and ἄλφα/ωμεγα of our 66/67 obsessions. Or it will be soon. That's my conclusion. Who am I to judge?
Lovely mix, any chance of a Stereo mix in the future? Would really help hear all the vocals better. I understand some tracks are harder than others (if not impossible without some tricky AI work) to make stereo, but making the tracks that can be stereo, stereo, would be great. Either way, thank you, great work!
The Beach Boys a few months ago signed a MEGA licensing deal the Disney Bio was just a shot over the bow......their catalogue has not been fully presented to eager Beach Boy fans until now.....
Awesome!! Really love the piano only version of Caninessence! Is that from an outtake or did you isolate some parts? Love that version of Cool cool water. Found different outtakes of that particular version some years ago (without the chants). Can't find them now though.
This is a very cool crossover Smile/Smiley mix and I love it. But it's not Smiley Smile without 'She's going bald' or 'Gettin' Hungry". Or the weird sound effects in "Heroes &Villains. I do appreciate making that song and "Good Vibrations" lo-fi to fit the sound of the album.
The "easy my child" bit, I've only heard that on the 2004 version, and this sounds like young 1967 Brian. Is this actually from these sessions, or 2004 Brian AI de-aged? I thought this was an unwritten segment until then, or forgotten and unrecorded in 67
@@tally1354 only thing I’m not loving about this mix is the AI, I don’t really think the robotic quality suits the organic feel of the project, or even The Beach Boys Music as a whole. The glitches are unnerving and lacks the spirituality that’s so integral to Brian’s music. And I’m saying this as someone who isn’t opposed to AI in most cases
I have to know, how did you pull off the version of Cabin Essence that's on this version? It's got this lovely instrumental backing track behind it that I've never heard anywhere else.

it could have on SMiLE too, with Tune X/Tones
It's like the chill out version of smile

This makes Smiley Smile sound even more like Smiley Smile

I knew whistle in was, but had no idea about with me tonight
This sounds great. Would luv to be able to buy a copy when the record store opens in the morning. Totally brilliant.
I love it, its like the mtv unplugged of the beach boys
For sure, it's like a sequel to their Party! album.
MTV of unplugged of The Beach Boys could also be on the live songs in the 1967 Sunshine Tomorrow compilation

I really like this. I love the album sleeve as-well. I prefer this over the one we got. It’s more complex and the same as Smile. :)
