Yes! This is one of my favorite songs, and the harmonies are a big reason. I’ve been obsessed with this for many years. Had the pleasure of hearing it live a couple times from Brian himself.

Nice job! Bad habits have annihilated my head voice & falsetto, can only get a fifth or so above my head voice peak and that requires a lot of volume. Brian’s such a genius and you did him proud 👍

Excellent. Another astounding thing is that the Beach Boys performed Heroes and Villains in some of their live shows. They sang those complicated parts while playing their instruments. Of course, they had wonderful side musicians that toured with them (not the Wrecking Crew, who were primarily studio musicians), and some of the side musicians sang as well.

Thanks, Tim! Now I will have this stuck in my head all day. Not that that is a bad thing. I do hope there is slightly more multiple part harmonies and doo wop on HCT's next album. Really fun to sing along with this style of vocals.
Ha ha thank you. Yes this stuff can be infectious. HCT is a really a pretty different beast that is not a clear fit for doo wop although I was surprised I was able to make it work for a full song in Diagnosing Johnny. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

In my youth as a metal head, I always found The Beach Boys cheesy and lame… the epitome of old dad rock…. As I’ve grown up I’ve realized how wrong I was. I’ve come to love The Beach Boys and regard Brian Wilson as the musical genius he is
It's really a shame how common this sentiment is. I remember thinking the Beach Boys were like an outdated American Beatles, but the first time I listened to Pet Sounds, I quickly changed tune
Literally me
I never cared about what people thought - came to the genius of The Beach Boys first as a young teen in the early 90's (and paid for it being made fun of), hated metal and hip-hop, but then later came to embrace metal and hip-hop, beat-making, etc. So eventually, we all come to the same place I guess.

this was such a good analysis i am now a viewer i hope to see more beach boys breakdowns. you knew how much time to spend talking about each thing, and when you were talking about notes youd always explain it in context of the harmony and the song itself

Tim, that was Amazing! I first heard Heroes & Villains in '76 on a comp LP 20 Golden Greats and loved it. It reminded me of the work of Scottish singer/Songwriter/Vocalist Chris Rainbow and his wonderful Harmony pieces such as All Night & Solid State Brain. You're definitely correct about the 3 part choir overdub, There's 20 or so minute long video on UA-cam called the making of Smile and it shows Brian in the studio re-recording everything from the SMiLE album in 2003 or 2004 for his solo release of it. There are only 3 people on a mic for the sustaining chord vocal harmony.
Wow, I don't remember that segment of the documentary although I must have seen it. It is not common to have legato and staccato parts intermingled like this and I thought it was a very unique approach.

Dubway, which I had nothing to do with writing or recording of was more of an exploration in human beat box techniques and production than it was about contrapuntal, elaborate vocals. If you listen to the harmonies and rhythms of the vocals in Dubway they are always in unison as opposed to this Heroes and Villains line which has 9 parts, most of which are doing totally different rhythms. Great job. I think Dennis tended to sing the parts right above Mike, so he's probably the Baritone 1 part; plus, I believe there are quotes somewhere from Brian talking about Dennis doing that cupping-his-mouth thing to get a specific kind of sound. I can't think of where I've seen that, but as soon as you mentioned the technique it rang a bell. Keep up the good work!
Just found this, referring to Wouldn't it Be Nice: “[It] has a very special and subtle background. One of the features of this record is that Dennis sings a special way, cupping his hands,” Wilson stated in the liner notes. “I had thought for hours of the best way to achieve the sound, and Dennis dug it because he knew it would work.”

My impression has always been that the Baritone 1 part is actually hummed. It just sounds that way to me on the original recording.
I really like Brian Wilson! I've heard Smile - my favorite "unreleased" song by Brian is "It's Over Now" from Adult/Child also an unreleased Beach Boys album. You can hear the 10 year difference between the two songs. Mike Love said it wasn't Beach Boys music anymore.

Did you ever try MuseScore for Mac instead of Digital Performer? It's free and very good for writing and producing sheet music and playing back what you wrote. (I'm not affiliated with them in any way, I just like their kit.)
I wonder if Van Dyke Parks might have helped Brian a little with the complex vocals. I do kinda hear slight bits of Parks influence
in Heroes and Villains. Especially the instrumental prologue at the end after the voices do a scale walk and down. Just my 2 cents.

I haven't heard this song since it came out in the late 60s but, today out of the blue I was singing this song! I thought it was called Hero's & Villagers instead of Villians. Before singing this I was so upset about politics in DC & this happened. I see Mr. T as the Hero & the left...Villans!

Great job. The bass and baritone 1 at the start are just a sort of simplified stride piano bass line. Normally, the left hand alternates pinky/fingers back and forth on root and five on the downbeat, but here he does root/root. And since it's an octave jump - awkward for a singer, he splits the bass line into two voices. I'm guessing, that is. And I suspect he might have been thinking of a string section when he wrote the whole note sustain part. You can always layer parts without the ear getting confused as long as you make them distinct.
That is an interesting point about the stride piano emulation, I had not thought about it but in retrospect seems obvious enough. And yes the choir part and strings would have a relatively similar timbre and function in such a part. Thanks for taking the time to watch this video and comment.
