In big cities good public transportation is a must. Anyone who likes to drive their car everywhere forgets how deadly traffic accidents can be. The cost of keeping up a car, and honestly the stress also involved driving a car. I honestly think private transportation is only good in places with a low population.
I prefer public transportation in the city. In the suburbs it all depends on how reliable the transportation is. Out in the country is a totally different thing. If you don't have a car you are stuck unless you have great neighbors to take you places.
And you don't even mention the environment impact of using a car instead of public transportation, I do like to use public transportation it gives me time to read.

I do like public transport within cities, going long distances, autos can add a great convenience , as long distant trains etc run less frequently.

No public transport where I live, 25km {google it] to nearest train station which I do use when going into the city, Brisbane, Queensland Australia.
