Calder Walton - "Spies" Charts Century-long War of 'Hot' and 'Cold' Espionage Between East and West.

- Calder Walton is a world-leading expert on intelligence, national security, and geopolitics. He has written two books, the latest of which is “SPIES. The Epic Intelligence War between East and West” (2023). It is a best-selling exposé of the history of Russian intelligence, that challenges the idea that the Cold War ended with the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991, but in fact continued after, down to the present day. Today, he argues, the West is in a new Cold War with Russia and China.

Your interviews continue to amaze me with the depth and quality of insight. …On the Trump-Russia topic: we in the USA haven’t seen an internal existential security risk this enormous since our 19th century civil war, and because of the “political candidate” nature of risk, any serious public discourse addressing the problem is cut off at the knees by the hyperpolarized partisanship of our 2-party system. Any critique of Trump or attempt to hold him accountable is seen by half the population as a Democrat party political agenda. Getting our arms around any consensus view of objective reality is, for the moment, impossible. We truly are skating along the brink of our own disaster.
Allow me to say Sir, Trump reminds me of Milošević with his recent demeanor. And authoritarian obedience he created, unimaginable for USA. Very, very worrying.
❤
I think Trump has gotten into hot water in Russia. It could have been under age girls slipped into his rooms such as a chamber maid or other help and he was covertly filmed . This is the Russian system as prostitution is illegal in Russia
Today's political polarisation, unfortunately is not just restricted to the US. But to many of us outside of America what is happening seems seems almost incomprehensible.
Huge gratitude. Jonathan, for inviting Calder Walton ! I’m not going to lose a single word …👍👍👏👏👏💙💛
These just keeps getting better. Geopolitics needs to comeback into western conversation.
Staying busy Jonathon 🙏🇺🇦
👍👍👍
Another brilliant interview. Thank you.
Enjoying listening to this conversation very much. Excellent questions on Your side Jonathan and great expertise from Mr. Walton.
Indeed, Russia is getting machinery parts, electronics, spare parts...and some companies over here supplying this to them, don't even bother to conceal it any more! Let us imagine the West had supplied Nazis with machinery etc. in the Spring 1939 or so.
Now let us imagine the advertisement for vacancy in a company, prerequisites are knowledge of Russian and English, (Knowledge of Italian or German is of advantage), openly quoting the afore mentioned.
Or, let us imagine, Wirtschafts- und Handelskammer der Russischen Föderation (Trade- and Commerce Chamber of...you get the idea) still fully operating in ... in front of our eyes. (Happened to have them personally on the line, they asked about their current heating- and electricity bills, managed to remain calm and professional, can´t change the World).
Dear Jonathan, ´ am getting very, very, very...angry. I mean, somebody should be grabbed at his business tie and brought to the court because of high treason.
After watching for five minutes, I’m gonna buy this book! Phenomenal guest, superb interviewer. Thank you for CONSISTENTLY providing such excellent content with very knowledgeable guests. Your program is the best one out there! 😊
Hmm..? You might need to update your history knowledge a bit.. there was a lot of trade going on with the "west" long after 1939.. part of why the US didn't really join the war until the attack on Pearl Harbour..🧐
same here! Very deeply angry about toward those co's which are mostly european but also some american (where i am), and toward US and UK & DE and other euro gvt's who are allowing this. Those co's are heavy industrial and have sold key military components during this past two years and played games and b.s. w/ the info re that, until investigative journo's starting pointing it out. One hero is of course is Browder, re this, he testified to Congress re oil money/tech recently. He's an expert money man and he is the sole reason Ru was held to account legally at all over time, namely since his own attorney in Ru was murdered by the Ru regime, while he was in jail, for having represented him, Browder, who had been the main foreign hedge fund manager, and a boon to Russian biz over time. Putin and his silovki are literally like an ancient mafia clique. And not even with the codes that the org crime italians had here in the U.S. long ago! These are primitive thugs, and THAt is why Putin has been throwing in some prison slang into his talking for over 20 years! Medvedev started putting in his wordings over the past 5-10 years. Dark times, and RU must be contained, which will probably mean some level of demilitarization.
Thank you, Jonathan. Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦
That was fascinating, thank you both.
Another good guest. 👍👍
Great guest, i'll look for his book!
One of your very best! Fantastic
Budapest is the last stronghold of the KGB and one of the first strongholds of the CCP in Europe.
Thanks!
You could trace the US-Russia rivalry all the way back to De Tocqueville's writings in the 1840's. He spoke then of two great nations dominating world affairs.
Thank you, Jonathan and Calder Walton, for this excellent conversation.
🇺🇦 Перемоги і миру всім українцям! 🇺🇦
Another really good conversation. I completely agree that the Cold War never really ended.
Wow! Someone needs to bring Jake Sullivan up to date
Indeed 😜
An education along with the spinal implant?
...ditto for one of his "advisors"m Samuel Charap.....
Great, went and got the audio version of the book on the strength of your latest guest, its absolutely brilliant.. a prequel is an excellent idea, thanks SC.
great interview and topic to cover, thank you for making this, cheers from southern Soivet Canukistan! - as per Pat Buchannan.
Thanks. Good
Interesting interview.. .thank you Johnathon & Calder.

Good conversation!
The long story of conflict between West and East. A great topic, thanks! 😊
Sorry, but this just covers the latest part of that conflict... It originates hundreds of years earlier..🤔🧐
🇺🇦🇬🇪🙏🇬🇪🇺🇦
Another great interview Jonathan, how you are already at 200k followers is a mystery. Keep up the good work
Great! Pretty good interesting! I am totally infatuated by what our guest speaker presents today!
He has gone to a great depth of history and unveils great historical moments which only a handful of people know especially when it comes to Russian civil war, the Bolshevik and the emergence of secret Russian police. He presents Russian espionage and its development since the early Bolshevik which is quite fascinating and at the same time challenges our conventional beliefs imposed on us by our academic historical knowledge.
We misses or overlook many historical events and their aftermath. There is much kept as secret or unknown by general public. Well if it is the case, then this video is definitely for you. This drives me so hard that I have now strong intention to read his books and I suggest you folks do the same.
This video is pretty good impressive, and resourceful and yes, it grabs your attention from end to end!
Thank you Jonathan for being always recourceful. Thank you for bringing our wonderful guest speaker!
Slava Ukraine!
Glory to the heroes!
💛💙💜💙💛 listening uninterrupted 😊

Interesting interview. We can only hope that Calder Walton's pessimistic prediction on Trump winning in november is wrong.
No doubt an excellent discussion. Glad you mentioned the Opinchina. For me it's a structural frame unto the present. And illustrates the medieval court clanish character of Putin's vertical located in the early modern period of state power. Like your guest says, this is not unique to Putin. Kotkin, Felnishky & Synder express patterns of the same structure. And so Johnathan (accepting that your focus is rightly on Ukraine & the present) a thematic discussion of the Russian succession crisis will be of import for Ukraine & the world. I believe that that gun has already been fired.
What was that Monitor's handle please? Checkers, Czech's or some other?
Thank you for this interview! It's one of your best in terms of depth of understanding and knowledge.
If I may make a suggestion. As was said in the interview, western governments are not ready to fully back Ukraine with all the weapons it needs, western troops to, etc.
Therefore, I think it would be extremely interesting to ask your interviewees for suggestions of alternative ways to fight Russia.
that has been done/talked about in many of these interviews, throughout the two years plus. That's why it's they call it hyrbid warfare or grayzone. The weakness the west has is in the info war space, which has been quite weak. The main idea is to not counter every single false story the ru's put out, bcuz they pump out so many so fast and reiterate the prior ones, that it's counterproductive to countermand each one. The idea is to counter it by presenting the well-known facts that many journo's have observed and attorney's have observed when working for the U.N. for example, in documenting thousands of warcrimes in Ukr.
What Calder is saying is that Russia/Soviet Union's humiliation is comparable to Germany in both World Wars..Germany was huumilated in WW1 but came back with Hitler although defeated a second time. So, Putin's mindset is thus. Let's hope he's defeated.
👍👍👍
Great conversation, despite the bleak 2025 prediction. One would hope that other nations wouldn't allow Trump to make a unilateral decision for Ukraine.
I'm counting on the UK.
Excellent interview! Given this current cold war potentially heating up, what are your thoughts on the Russian plans to have nuclear "drills" in the region near Rostov-on-Don, including parts of currently occupied Ukraine. Supposedly a response to Western "militant" statements . It includes missile forces, aviation and navy. This sounds eerily like the buildup to the 2022 invasion ! And could this be the disruption / sabotage promised by Russia during the Peace Summit in Switzerland?
Yep. The nukes. Exactly. I believe it's genuinely difficult for many otherwise sincere and clear-eyed analysts to incorporate the nuclear risks into their calculus. I sympathize. But I fear this denial will lead us to err.
it's always been difficult, that was what the Cold War was contingent upon. That also means we already know the calculus of such, which is why we have privately warned the Ru's that if they set a single one off anywhere in Ukr, then they will lose a massive chunk of their military capacity by us using our conventional weapons on them, and presumably they lack the ability to do same to us. So there seems to be a quite lopsided actual damage-inflicting potential by the west, supposedly. The details of that is not public, so we have to take that with a grain of salt obviously. But it's a fair assumption by us western public.
Just to observe that the quote you often use about the fall of the USSR being the "greatest political catastrophe" is a mistranslation of the Russian text
"Above all, we should acknowledge that the collapse of the Soviet Union was a major geopolitical disaster of the century. As for the Russian nation, it became a genuine drama. Tens of millions of our co-citizens and co-patriots found themselves outside Russian territory. Moreover, the epidemic of disintegration infected Russia itself."
At the 7:30 min mark "...it's not looking to re-create a communist empire of any sorts, it's about russia's humiliation..." yes, BUT there's one more element that was not mentioned, and it's the main gripe putin has, he misses the SUPER POWER status the Soviet Union had! This is key, the loss of the super power status was the humiliation. There's an intrinsic inter-connection between the two, BUT, but, the "humiliation" is a symptom of the real issue that matters to Tsar putin....super power status..... This is why he's always talking loose with nukes, it's a direct pathology of the craving for this long lost super power the Soviet Union had and only vestige russia has left of this long lost super power status is the nukes.
I often consider how much mr putin must relish the attention he's getting worldwide now, a lot of people wondering what hell do next.
A fascinating discussion but I am left feeling that we in the West have no sense of what is to be achieved. This is best summed up by the comment about waiting to see if Trump wins the presidency in November. Is anyone really serious about Ukraine being saved?
100%, regarding the Trump message. It's such a---. Sigh. What more can be said? 😔
A bit off topic but I could never follow the logic that a candidate espousing an America 1st policy could equate as a natural ally to a Russia 1st stance.
You're easily fooled, is the reason.

Do you miss the nazis?

Totally disagree with Walton. Trump will definitely not win in November of 2024!
I hope you are right!
It’s very disappointing to listen to 2 Western Leftists discuss authoritarian socialism as if the differences between Mussolini’s Italy, Hitler’s Germany, or Stalin’s Soviet Union mattered to the people under their rule. You still have not comprehended their is centralized controlled societies on 1 side and democratic societies on the other side. Societies always have elites, no matter what economic structure is used. The only difference is if governance is freely determined or imposed.
In the Spanish Civil War there were 3 forces: democratic socialists, authoritarian socialist communists, and authoritarian socialist fascists. The supporters of democracy never stood a chance.
In the Soviet Union, the Communist Party did rein in some excesses after Stalin’s death. The KGB always was looking at international operations. They were involved in the 3RD Communist International even after failed revolutions all across Central Europe following WW1.
You both were wrong about Putin’s value to the current Russian vision of expansionism. Putin is a John Gotti in your face type of leader. He only got to amass such power because of his ascension to power at a unique period in Russian history. There is no one following him who will be able to amass the same power. They will seek a return to a quiet, steal all you Russia of 2010. They will not follow Putin in war. These Russian leaders will make a quick deal for peace.
