Is Mephiles A Good Sonic Villain?

- Sonic '06 is a heavily disliked game, for good reason too, but one aspect that I want to go over is one of the game's villains: Mephiles the Dark. Was he a good villain for the story? Did he have an impact on the characters? Let's find out.

A good Sonic villain he isn't. A good Shadow and Silver villain he is.
Functionally he is just another black doom, tempting shadow to join the dark side, making him kind of redundant as a shadow villain.
As far as a villain for Silver goes, well, the man didn’t really have any resolution to his conflict with silver. He tricked him, made him double down on the mission and left before he could do anything about it
Black Doom: You killed Sonic the Hedgehog, you essentially guaranteed yourself a throne in Heaven next to God.
Mephiles: I'm so confused right now.

Yeah for the reasons you mentioned I think Mephiles is a good Sonic villian, and I agree that seeing that Kingdom Valley will be one of the stages that Shadow will go through in his part of the SXSG game does make it look kind-of possible that Mephiles could return (maybe in that game). Though there is also a possibility that Mephiles might get a theatrical debut because earlier this year some other UA-camr put out a video about which Sonic games Sega is allowing Paramount to adapt copyrighted source material from into the SCU (Sonic Cinematic Universe) movies, and the list that was shown in that video does have Sonic 06 on it as one of the games that are allowed to get a theatrical loose adaption!
He sees the heroes as puppets, and his hands are skilled and cunning. Not even Black Doom was this good at manipulation tactics.
I 100% agree with you. Mephiles is an excellent villain, and I really hope he returns in Sonic X Shadow Generations.

No. His plan worked was stupid and filled up with plot contrivances like him just not using his time travel abilities to kill Sonic to make Elise cry and release Iblis instead of having Blaze and Silver do it for him, or him not getting the emeralds in the future, (he’d only need one cuz in the first cutscene of the last story, with one emerald he can just somehow bring in all the rest), and just merging with Iblis without having to go through with any overly convoluted time travel plot.
That’s not a plot contrivance that just shows how sadistic and twisted he really is by not going with the easier option. He loves manipulating and tormenting others like he did with Shadow and Omega.

Mephiles is the best thing we could get out of 06. He is a perfect villain. He looks like shadow, has a dark aura, is cunning, and has a great theme! I love this game, even more than Unleashed!
Also, off topic, did anyone play this on a USB SSD or HDD? Just curious.

I like him in concept but his only problem is his execution
Same could be said about several things in Sonic games...
...but that's honestly fine, in a way. It gives you fuel for your imagination. "How could this have been done better?"

Personally, Mephiles seems like a very mid villain to me. There are other villains who are better than him like Metal Sonic, Black Doom or Merlina.
Short answer: No. Absolutely not.
Long answer: Mephiles' actions throughout the game are needlessly convoluted, stupid, and/or downright detrimental to his goals. Why manipulate and send Silver to the future to kill Sonic when he can easily do it himself and get it done more reliably? Heck, why kill Sonic at all? If he can travel through time and space at will, why not go to any point in time where Ibilis is and fuse with him there?
Why spend so much time trying to sway Shadow to the dark side? Why get Silver involved, either? They're unnecessary extra factors he's throwing into the equation when leaving them out this would ensure a swifter victory.
And that's not even mentioning his design is a lame recolor of Shadow's, or the fact that he and Sonic never interact once throughout the entire game, or his killing of Sonic and his ultimate win in the end are extremely forced and anti-climatic. Imo, Mephiles is one of, if not, THE WORST villain in Sonic history. Even worse than the Deadly Six and Lyric.
Because he wants to tortured them because by breaking them mentally he would have achieved pleasure from it because he is the puppet Master behind the strings because if he were to simply kill Sonic without Elise being involved then he would never fuse with ibis because he knows that killing you is just too easy for him and he did defeat shadow mentality by getting omega to turn against him before rouge restore his faith in his friends and the reason why he does this is just because he can he is sadistic and he enjoys breaking people and even if it's plans don't work he will not give up on trying to do so this is why Mephiles is the best villain in My opinion because we never have any Sonic villains that even challenged Sonic at all and I mean in terms of morality or challenging his beliefs or even make him go to his lowest point we need more Sonic villains that can do this we need those types of villains that can give off the aura that can leave an impact on the audience because we don't get that from mindless characters compared to something that actually has a personality this is one of the ingredients that we need for a Sonic villain and Sonic right now might not be up there with DC or marvel when it comes to those villains but I hope Sonic does get there in future releases of the games
Understandable. I do think the time travel and lack of interaction with Sonic were parts of his character that definitely could've been more finely tuned, although Sonic's plot as a whole needs lots of tuning. His general hatred towards Shadow is given context when we learn that Shadow was the one to originally trap him within the Scepter of Darkness and when they meet in Kingdom Valley Mephiles pretty plainly tells Shadow that he wants to send him to oblivion.
A swift victory doesn't really matter to him because he has all the time he could ever need since he can time travel, so he tries to get as much out of people as he can before that happens, hence the manipulation of Silver and attempted revenge on Shadow. When those eventually both fail, he moves on and decides kill Sonic himself (again probably something that could be improved upon and shown off better if 06 had more time to cook but I digress).
I don't think his plans were perfect or that his character entirely was perfect which is why I just said he's a good villain, not the best in the series. I definitely wouldn't put him down with villains like the deadly six or lyric though, cause at least he has good some good character interactions rather than just being nothing at all.
TLDR, yeah I get what you're saying and I'm also trying to justify writing from a rushed, 17 year old game, but I just like the way he manipulated characters and actually gave Shadow something new to focus on that wasn't his creation. Even today we're still focusing on Shadow's past with stuff like Sonic X Shadow Gens coming out and while I'm excited for it, I also wanna see Shadow get pushed forward rather than always being stuck on his past.
@@JustinJulian-bq8vmif mephiles' whole reason for doing this convoluted scheme was due to being sadistic and wanting to cause suffering for pleasure, then wtf does he not go around hurting people or torture everyone from places to places? He legit can't be stopped, isn't he? Even if people find away to stop mephiles, how hth would you outsmart this great manipulator? Answer: just don't think about it and do this dumb plan instead. Yeah, just turn off your brain and enjoy. Not really a good villain if you ask me.
Most people don't understand that Mephiles is poorly written. They just say he killed Sonic, so he's a good villain.
