  • hi guys! I finally found some time to edit these clips - work has been so BUSY lately 🥲
The #1 question I always get is, how many hours do u work per week and what does a day to day life of an investment banker looks like. And the answer is always “it depends”. Here is a Monday in my work life in office. I rarely know what staffings/deliverables might pop up each day, so hours and workload vary drastically.
Hope you guys stay for more videos on my work life & personal exploration outside of work! Come join my journey as I navigate though the corporate world as a 23-year-old!
lmk if there are any videos you want to see next :)))

I used to work in advertising, which was the same "hustle culture" as you showed in your video. As you get older you'll eventually realize that spending these insane amount of extra hours is simply not worth it, since you're missing so many things in your personal life. The only good thing: as soon as you're in a "normal" paced job, you're resilient to stress that barely nothing throws you of the track anymore.

This is so true. I used to work 14 hour days for a few years when I was younger and slowly realized that it wasn't worth it. Eventually switched to a slower paced job and now I have more time to focus on health, family, friends and hobbies. And yes once you go through this experience - you do also become very resilient to all kinds of work-related stress - like you'll still be stressed but you know that you've gone through worse and this time can't be as bad as before.

I appreciate these types of videos showing "a day in the life", especially from banking. I also appreciate the experience of a woman in banking, because, quite frankly, I do feel a woman will address undesirable aspects head-on like managing stress and mental health. I think, far too many of us men, shy away from this stuff, when we all are human and go through it. I like the videos. Keep them coming. All the best here from Canada.

So nice of you to show true work hours! I am getting into corporate law and one thing that annoys me about tech/analyst/law influencers is they only show the good side of the job like the food stipend the fancy buildings etc they don’t actually show the ‘work’ part you have to put in long hours every day even weekends sometimes and it’s not for everyone

    • @ninja_tony

Yep! I went into accounting and learned the same the hard way. When i was in college, we had all these fancy dinner parties with executives from the Big Four firms, one of the senior partners from Ernst & Young even invited his “chosen protégés” out for weekends on his yacht. They always showed us what the glamorous side of the industry was like, but never showed us the 100 hour weeks we would endure during busy season, the massive toll it takes on your mental AND physical health, and how little personal life you get to have.

You're ruining your health without realizing it. The hours you work are just insane. There are more things to life than job titles or acquiring goods and services. You're on the fast track to develop a burnout and possibly other stress related illnesses. Additionally, as you're aware, the law of diminishing returns states that every additional work hour is going to yield weaker results. Don't do this to yourself, for both your mental and physical health. You need time to socialize, rest and enjoy life.

100h a week is normal in IB.
Thats why I would never choose this as a carrer path.
You probaly need to do that for 5 years until you move up in the carrer ladder and then finaly be allowed to work normal work hours for an even better sallary.
Unfortunately sucess is not guranteed, but atleast you make alot of money.
Here in germany the best banks offer 100k for 40h a week that is obv. way longer in reality (you get payed the hours you work more)
As ik in the law Buisness it looks similar and you arent guranteed to be accepted as partner.

You will get to a point where you realize that the money is not worth the time trade-off. I also work in the finance industry, and after 20 years, make around 500k. Obviously that sounds like a lot to most people, but it is the kind of amount an investment banker can make after 3 or 4 years. Honestly say that it’s been several years since any pay increase made any material difference to my life. If You are doing this because you have a well-defined plan to make a lot of money and get out early and good luck to you, just make sure you don’t get too accustomed to that income because lifestyle creep is very real. That being said it feels like yesterday that I was in my 20s, your time is your most valuable resource. Do you really want to give it away? There are plenty of jobs in the finance world don’t require 80 hour weeks.

You remind me of me, ha ha!
When I’m out flying 747’s all over the world that’s actually my time for rest and relaxation. And I have to force that upon myself - it’s very important that I always show up very well rested and ready to fly. Even small physiological issues such as slight fatigue, dehydration, etc. will turn into noticeably degraded cockpit performance.
But when I’m at home that’s when I’m dealing with my commercial and industrial properties. And that’s when I become an “eight hour worker” - eight hours in the morning followed by eight hours in the afternoon. And that’s on an easy day. There have been times when I’ve painted, done electrical work, or worked on other miscellaneous tasks for more than 40 hours straight. Crazy as it sounds - I actually enjoy that sort of thing!

I'm in my early 20's and it's so interesting to see the grindset that goes on in other industries. I think grinding is great if you have the energy and tenacity for it, but for me, I recognized early on that I just don't have that in me. I have panic disorder that made getting through school tough. Now that I have my degree I've been working a corporate job where I put in a standard 45-55 hours per week. I'm still stressed and I'm certainly not making as much as an investment banker, but I'm glad I found a job that matches my stress level. I think if I stepped foot on a sales floor I'd break out in hives 😅

  • @tsiaotsiao3906

I think those in their early or mid 20’s would think this kind of job would seem exciting without actually knowing really the amount of stress and pressure of the job. It’s good you can expose the truth to others. Good luck!

She has a much brighter future than you though. Eventually she has a good chance to make 7 figures in 10 years, retire early, support her family, travel and enjoy life. Also gets to enjoy NYC! Nothing comes easy. I'd be sad at your prospects for supporting a family and living in a HCOL city too.
