11 years later and this gentleman’s tutorial is still highly relevant!!! Thank you.
It’s viewing should be a required viewing for all Prius owners. Additionally, he kindly takes ‘other drivers’ on the road into sincere consideration, as you can become obsessed with hypermiling technique at the expense of other’s road enjoyment. Superb production & performance values, as well 👍🏻👍🏻.
Them blues in the backgroud makes it so therapeutic
Excellent video, still holds up almost a decade later for my new 2019 Prius LE! Thanks!
Still holds for 2020 le, i figured it out before watching this video, but what a great video
Is this your first one?
That was a great lesson! Learned a lot, the calm way he explains takes everyone for a chill digital test drive.
I just bought a 2008 toyota prius. thanks for helping me get the best mileage out of it. I thought the more coasting the better but I was wrong.
I find that running the engine at 70 to 90 mpg produces the best effect. It's not easy to get in that zone, and I ca't get it all the time, but it really increases my overall gas mileage.
That was really well explained and incredibly relaxing to watch - thanks. I cant wait to get one.
I just started driving a prius for work.. this was pretty much exactly what i was looking for when i hit youtube this evening haha
There are three kinds of driving. Slow driving, fast driving and Prius Driving
First and third are the same, if you want to drive a Prius with real low fuel consumption. 3,5l/100km averagely with a Prius 4. In addition it is very helpful to have good experience with the HSD and know all its tricks for lowering fuel consumption. Never be in a hurry but stay relaxt all the time while you drive your Prius.
@@peterweise3836 better stay out of the way of normal drivers and let them pass then, or you are being selfish in order to save money.
This video makes me happy I bought a Prius! 😊
I bought a used 2015 Prius with no idea how to drive it. Thank you for this video it was everything I wanted and needed to know. I think it will be fun trying to get the most efficiency out of this vehicle
Thank you very much for this very clear video. Now for the first time I understood what pulse, glide and coasting are.
Driving any car that aware can drastically improve MPG. Most/many people aren’t even aware they are driving, I think.
Thanks for this video.
My '19 awd-e Prius has averaged 61mpg from new, and in the summer I often see 70-80mpg; I had to learn how to drive a Prius correctly do get this.
I'm not the only one with an awd-e getting fantastic mileage; Toyota did something very right with this car.
I drove a 1.8 prius courtessy car and got 68 MPG.
With my UX250h I get 53 MPG under the same conditions.
@@fivish - my average from new over 56K miles was 58 us mpg.
Great lesson! Thank you.😃 I watched this video for several times in last three years since I got my Prius V. This time I think I have fully understood. 🦅🦅🇺🇸
I'm totally impressed by the number of keys you keep in your keychain. 😀
Certainly, he is the expert on this prius efficiency driving.
Really informative video that creates so much understanding and awareness of some practical tips for driving efficiently. Thank you from New Zealand!
The ecomodder pulse and glide slightly presses the accelerator in the glide. There is a freewheeling engine off zone somewhere between light regenerative braking with the accelerator completely up, and light electric motor use.
Great info. I've been studying the prius. Kind of looking at the gen 2 used ones. Seems to be some good ones left......
Thank you sooo much for explaining !! God Bless!!
Thank you for your sharing of knowledge. Would you be so kind to explain in greater detail the "pulse" technique (how frequent on/off the gas, aprox. what percentage of throttle imput while pulsing, etc)? I've got an 07 gen 2. So far I've averaged 48 mpg after my first fill-up. Just looking to stretch fuel efficiency a smidgen more if I can help it.
I would like more info on the pulse as well, I’m a little confused
2010 Gen 3, and I too desire more “Pulse” clarification????
Great video 👍🏻
Very helpful !
Valuable tips. Thank you!
I have a slight beef with regenerative braking and it goes like this. Sure it puts power back into the battery. But it's on when coasting too. You don't have to touch the brake pedal to start slowing down as soon as you release the pressure on the accelerator pedal. Slip the car into neutral and you'll feel the car free up and roll a lot longer. That means you could have taken your foot off of the accelerator a lot sooner. The only time the regen should be working is when the brakes are being used. That's not the case in the gen 2 at least. Unless my car's been busted since new. Any opinions???
I will be driving the Prius until electric cars become more affordable and practical
That will be very soon
What is meant by pulse?
@@stephenalumbaugh9727 hitting the gas pedal
I just bought a 2002 toyota prius is same Type of driving or how i have to Drive this 2002 toyota prius and thank you nice video
I find that running on cruise control, flipping up and down, is often more efficient than using the gas peddle and brake, because the computer is figuring out what's best.
I use the cruise control as often as possible in my Highlander and Pilot, and i get consistently 19-20 mpg in the city.
@@gregnixon1296 I’ve never used cruise control in city traffic on any non hybrid. Too much stop and go…
Thia car is amazing
2024 here I just got a 2015 Prius 2. I’m in the mid 40s and looking to improve my mpg. Problem is my commute 120 each way goes through the mountains. It’s gradual but it’s making gas engine do a lot of work. I let it coast on the downhill portions. Do I need to incorporate the B mode when going downhill?
THANKS

TTL;DR: DO NOT STOP/SLOW down
Momentum, Momentum, Momentum.
Are these tips still applicable for newer models like 2010 or older?
Leonardo,
Yes, the are. The technology in newer Prius' is, for the most part the same as it was in 2010, with some advancements, of course.
momentum, momentum, momentum.....drives other drivers crazy! haha
Yep, I coast aggressively.
TBH this was me with a manual transmission before I ever got a Prius Its just more of the same now.
What should I do when the Triangle of Death blinks on while moving downhill on a cold start in my 2008 Prius?
Excellent demonstration. Would be grateful for advice on the possibility of connecting a gadget (such as OBD) to view the RPM while driving - on Prius 2008. Thank you.
Thank you for the helpful video! Very well instruction. Now, I understand pulse, glide and coast definition. I have a 2013 prius V. Would you tell me on which way would be better for my prius V on getting better gas mileage?
I wonder which mode would be better to for braking on a downhill/downgrade. Using the B mode or by applying the brake gently(three bar charging). But then, would I be overheating the brakes or wearing out the brake by riding the brake on a long downgrade.(my brake pressure on the brake pedal "just reach the 3 bar charging indicator). Sometimes, I'd released the brake gentle(down to two bar charging mode and 3bar indication) to see if I am using the brake or just using the regenerative braking mode.
Would I damage the engine by shift my prius V to the "B mode" driving on the downgrade to control my car speed(coast at 50mph to a complete stop)? Using the brake gently or shift to B mode and kick the rev up, using engine braking! Would this create more pressure in the CVT? Would this damage the CVT? Or create premature wear for the engine..?
I'd rather use my brakes and get the pads replaced than engine wear and tear. However I don't know much about B mode
Cruise Control wastes gas. I hope you point that out. Good video, so far.
What model do you think is most efficient from the years 2002-2016? I heard to steer clear of 2010. When u say pulse you mean when the gas engine kicks on that happens automatically right.
You should go for the 2016 model. Great car and they come with all those extra's like Head Up Display, Lane Assist, and all those goodies and more fuel efficient.
@@wimschoenmakers5463 I have a 10 but looking to upgrade to a 16. I am on the fence about it as I love my 10.
Thank you!
Seems like I'm the only one who has a bad experience with toyota prius 2007 here, I'm leaving in south africa and I bought a toyota prius which has 266000kms on the clock, with a death battery , and until now I can't get a mechanic that can fix forme, when I take it to toyota dealers they told me that it a difficult car with a lot of work, and to fix it for me it's good has buying another new car, so now I'm stuck with my car at home ...
first time I used utube and I have a 2006 Prius, I automatically do drive a lot as suggested, but the MPG always says 47.5 and never changes!! what do you think is wrong? I watch the chart, coasting and accelerating easily but no change in MPG
Reset your trip computer each journey and you'll get a fresh MPG reading. Yours has built up over thousands of miles so has found an average which will rarely change
4th gen Prius and Prius Prime can get up to 70+MPG in these conditions.
MMM SOAPY CAROLA, I truly am sorry for my broken english I am currently working towards improving it.
What do you keep your tires inflated to?
The tire pressures are listed in the driver side door jam.
I drive my Lexus UX250h just like any other automatic and I get 53 MPG (UK) without any messing about.
Thanks!
I drive 2017 Prius and I can easily get 80 MPG in highway
So... what happens on highways or motorways, then?
Ty learned alot
what year are you driving?
Groovy.
There is no such thing as "momentum IN the road." There is momentum of the car on the road, but that was energy from gas or electric, which is only two sources. Maybe he means the pull of gravity when going downhill.
Basically he means coasting once your car is up to speed. Perhaps I would have coined in momentum on the road.
nice tips
Have you tried to brake on B "mountain brake"? I use it a lot getting more braking power and electrisity..
If I am correct if you use B on a downhill it is so you don't wear out and overheat brakes and not to overcharge batteries while in full charge. It won't charge batteries while using B on a downhill even if it shows charge on grid.
The word is "Engram" not "Ingram". It's a permanent (or semi-permanent) change in the brain to encompass a new task or thought.

2010 Prius.
How much gas is saved per mile by cutting-off other drivers?
Thank you! Let us know if you have any questions!
I have a question about a 2010-2015 prius C. Is it normal for me to floor a prius all the time? I am not looking to save gas at the moment, but to be able to accelerate to the speed limit without interfering with the traffic behind. I am used to driving v6/v8 cars with well over 300hp. I find that flooring a prius is around the same acceleration as pressing the gas a couple inches on those cars. So is it ok for me to keep flooring a prius, or am I wrong and i can safely accelerate from 0-60 by pressing the gas only 1/4 of the way?
Can you please explain pulse and glide more and is there something that I need to do to get the electric to take over because I feel like when I let the foot off the gas all I do is coast.
so are you putting your foot on the gas and break by pumping it gently with your foot?
Expert? In spelling? . Regenerative Breaking? Should be Braking. Just sayin'. This video teaches a lot about the mechanicals of higher mpg thanks

i drive like this anyway. so fuyouh!
