I worked in a car repair and service shop for five years. During that time I saw several Prius vehicles come in with 200,000 to 300,000 miles on them and they were in for just oil changes, etc ( normal maintenance services). I was impressed so I now drive a 2009 Prius with 140,000 miles on it.

Hi mate, I’m in NZ too. Recently I found a Prius 2011. After I googled it they said Prius need to replace the battery after 10 years driving. So I just wanna ask you if it’s true or not, since you have one.😊
@@chasjiao4505 Not necessarily true. mine shows no sign of needing replacement after 11 years. My wife just bought a 2010 with the original battery too so 12 years and still going strong. It's rare for them to fail before 15 years old.
2011 Toyota Prius Owner here. Battery needs changing every 250,000km as per my Toyota dealer. I had to change mine at 236,000km a while ago. The dealer said that some taxi drivers in the area are swapping their batteries every few years, high hopes for a long life of the car. Search online, some places offer single battery cell swaps for under $100 instead of a full replacement. Mostly in big cities only. Very reliable otherwise
Had a Prius g2 (2004). Bought it in 2018 with 320k km as "faulty" with allegedly broken ABS unit for 2250 USD, sold in 2021 with 400k km for 1700 USD. ABS pump wasn't faulty, it was a brake pad that got so thin that it felt out, the brake piston has rubbed against the disc to the extent that the brake fluid started leaking. Fixed with original parts for 180 USD. Batteries were exchanged for new (original Toyota) in 2014, so were generally new at that time. I had no issue during the 3 years and 80k km, the car had even original undercarriage, no rust, everything worked just well. My car mechanic couldn't believe it. Except for the brakes, the only 2 things I did on the car was timing chain exchange (later than recommended, just when the engine icon poped on the dash and read the error code) and the shock absorbers, as the original ones were getting too mushy. The car was doing an excellent job - on highway between 130 and 170kmh, average consumption was around 6.0 - 6.5 l, country roads around 5.5, completely jammed city crossing for work around 3.8 - 4.2 l. Why sold? Cause we needed a bigger family car, exchanged it for 2014 Mazda Wagon 6 2.5 Skyactive-G, which I'm absolutely happy with, but probably going to switch it back to Prius, but 3rd gen this time. Reason? My wife's small, unpractical Peugeot sedan 1.6 HDI diesel (301) is getting at it's lifespan edge and needs replacement for something more dependable. So we are considering a VW Golf Variant 7gen alltrack 2.0 tdi 184hp, and this would make need for Mazda obsolete, no need for 2 family vagons. So Golf would take the "family car" role, especially useful on longer trips, and I'd change the Mazda for Prius 3g to be used mainly for commuting to work etc. So thanks a lot for this video review, hope the gen3 will prove similar realiability and durability as gen2 ;-)

Hey i have a 2012 Prius and i think the dashboard looks a little dated with that oldschool green dashboard light. I mean cars from the 80s and 90s also already had that green digital speedometer. You would think on 2012 you could have full color led. Or just white lights
Always wanted a Prius, particularly a 3rd gen Prius which I think is the best-looking version. Unfortunately, they were always out of my price range. With supply chain issues and dealer markups it's gotten even worse in the U.S. Strangely enough, though, you can get third gen Prieye for under 10 grand. I have to admit, I'm very tempted. I like fast cars too (Let's be honest. Everybody loves fast cars.) but I also love reliable, fuel-efficient vehicles. God help me, there may be a Prius in my future.
also consider other toyota hybrids like the corolla and camry, or even sienna if you want a larger car that's in my opinion more practical for ROAD use than an SUV prius prices are too high in my state, so I got a camry hybrid with 100,000 miles for LESS than what a prius would cost with 150,000 or more miles in all honesty, it's more of a work car than anything, but it's got enough power to actually be fun to drive while still getting about 35mpg combined, and 40 if I really feather the throttle (which is unreasonable in most cases since people are bad drivers and tailgate hard here) may not be the case everywhere in the states, but imo the prius kind of is overrated, which is somewhat of a good thing since people who don't know a lot about cars will completely ignore them like they don't get similar MPGs, causing their price to be more negotiable :)
Just found this vid and i think you have nailed it, as a owner of a 320,000 mile 2012 version i would pretty much agree on your sum up of the prius. The egr and head gasket and also oil burning are all related to low tension piston rings, the rings gum up with age and carbon letting oil bypass, this oil then clogs egr system up which if left will cause overheating and failed head gasket......But easy fix s available .....a good engine oil flush every 3rd oil change has kept my 2 prius's from oil burning and egr system clean.

@@MrTaxidriver50005 thanks, that's really good to know. Considering getting a cheapish Aqua of similar year but worried their batteries will be EOL soon leaving me with a large repair/replace bill soon after, so just weighing up whether it's worth it.
I have a Prius IV with just over 100,000 miles. It runs like a champ has tons of room and does everything I ask of it. It is a great commuter car and in a city known for small parking spots it is an ideal car.
Yes, if you want something Corolla sized that's a hybrid. The Corolla hybrid was never a thing until 2019/2020. And it's more practical than the Corolla Hybrid, it's a hatchback.
2009 totaled by a drunk driver while parked off road (!) 187,000 miles (300,950 km or so) Another 2009 is still going at 188,000 miles 2010 with 96,500 miles Another 2010 totaled by a teen yacking to her mom at 168,000 miles 2015 Prius v (wagon) with 105,000 miles 2013 Lexus ES 300h with 80,000 miles Are they reliable? YES. Only major problem to date was covered under a recall here in the USA -The 2010 inverter blew a power transistor, which was due to a bad design. Most issues have been things like 12-volt batteries replaced after five years, tires, a water pump, HID headlights failing due to water intrusion. There are three other Toyota hybrids in our extended family, all going strong. Another 2009 got totaled along the way. One of our 2009s blew a capacitor in the circuit board controlling the gas gauge and speedometer. I replaced it myself. That was a pain in the butt, but I saved hundreds by doing so. At 12-13 years old, the batteries in our oldest cars are getting a little tired, and mileage is falling off. But every mile we drive these cars is paying us back, because we have them paid off. Yes, the dated navigation system is ridiculous. The computerized radio in the 2015 Prius v is the worst piece of $#!† electronics I've ever seen (since it reboots itself constantly, at random). But these cars are outstandingly practical in ways that offset any other annoyances.
I get the impression that many drivers don't use the ac much to maximise mpg. This can cause the system to deteriorate. Maybe worth checking that the ac works properly otherwise a very expensive fix.
It doesn't actually have a CVT.It's a planetary gear system:completely different to the belt/pulley system on a regular CVT transmission.Toyota calls it an ECVT which is misleading.
The proper name is "power split system". It is not a CVT of any kind. The GEN 2 does have a belt but it only transfers power to another part of the "tranny". The belt was eliminated in GEN 3. Be sure to get rid of the non-synthetic WS ATF ASAP and put in REDLINE D6, a real synthetic.
You see a lot on the U.S. Prius forums about Gen 3s burning oil due to low tension piston rings and blowing head gaskets due to water pump failure and EGR Cooler blockages. But often these things don't happen until 200,000 plus MILES.
I bought a 2011 prius with 230000 miles and it still worked amazingly. As it was a cab there were some interior wearing issues but regardless it was amazing to drive and kept its value as a i sold it for 500£ more
I drive a 2012 Toyota prius for 5 and a half year now. Before it was my fathers business car. My consumption os 4,2 liters on 100 kilometers. I never had any issues with the car. Just the yearly maintenance at the Toyota dealer and there is always nothing wrong. It has 205.000 kilometers on the clock now. I’m still very happy with it. And I recommend everyone a prius.
My 2010 Prius just had it's first major repair beyond the basics like brakes, tires, and oil changes... The oil pressure sensor started leaking oil through it. The part cost me a whopping $25.
4:00 - "It's aging quite well" - agreed :) 5:00 'It's the go-to car if you don't car about cars" - I disagree. I have a Mercedes and a Lexus. My Prius is my "go-to" car for commuting to work ;)
Toyota Pious, for those amongst us who like to demonstrate their moral and righteous superiority as they drive along in the fast lane, below the speed limit.
The way the electric motor generator 1 work in conjunction with the internal combustion engine and electric motor generator 2 to produce not only drive and regen, but also offer the petrol engine variable ratio drive to the wheels using nothing more than a fixed planetary gear set, well when you understand how it works, it gets the inner engineer far more excited than any conventional super car, or any modern electric only car. It just does. If nothing elses, the Toyota hybrid system uses it's battery to energize an electric motor (or two) to facilitate the ultimate control over the gear ratio between piston engine output speed to wheel speed, the fact it can be used to recoup energy on de acceleration is just another bonus.
Your thoughts? I own a 2011 Prius Five Hatchback 4D. 4-Cyl Hybrid , 1.8 Liter Automatic , CVT, 150k miles. In great condition. Sporty rims and tires. All leather seats. No issues. I was in an accident-a car cut in front of me on a green arrow. My front bumper and hood are damaged & need to be replaced. There is no structural damage, and the only thing that needs to be repaired in the motor is the AC generator in the radiator. My insurance is saying it’s a total loss. I don’t know what to do. My insurance is offering me money, or I can repurchase it from them and get it repaired myself. It’s mainly cosmetic. Do I take the money or keep the car?
The 2010 was the first Prius with rear disc brakes. It took time to iron out some brake adjustments. On GEN 3, you have weak head gaskets, poorly designed electric water pump, a PCV valve mounted too low on the block, and an EGR valve/cooler that clogs.
With the gas prices on the rise, driving a cheap hybrid will make you seem like a smart guy, compared to the stigma of a "guy that does not care for what he drives" these cars has couple of years ago.
As a 2012 Prius owner i agreed that the digital display and the dashboard lights in oldschool green 80s 90s color is very dated that’s one of the things I don’t like. Why not make it white? Because than it looks a little more modern. Also you can’t debadge the car on the back to have a clean look. Because the letters are pinned in the 5th door… also very oldschool
speaking of environmentally friendly cars, could you possible do a review of a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (the plug in hybrid version). It was the first of its kind in Australia
Depends on how much you travel a day. You are either better off with a small electric because your route is short or have to charge multiple times. It does close to 10L/100km on highway because the engine is either beeing used as a generator or overdrive from (70kph?)

It's a such a shame we've never got the Prius plug-in directly available in Australia - they seem like an excellent extension of the Prius concept without having a ridiculously huge and ridiculously expensive EV battery.
Prius Prime due in 2024. My bet is that initial volumes will be so low it will be near zero until 2025. Same price as a Tesla model 3. prius prices are too high in my state, so I got a camry hybrid with 100,000 miles for LESS than what a prius would cost with 150,000 or more miles
in all honesty, it's more of a work car than anything, but it's got enough power to actually be fun to drive while still getting about 35mpg combined, and 40 if I really feather the throttle (which is unreasonable in most cases since people are bad drivers and tailgate hard here)
may not be the case everywhere in the states, but imo the prius kind of is overrated, which is somewhat of a good thing since people who don't know a lot about cars will completely ignore them like they don't get similar MPGs, causing their price to be more negotiable :)
Sadly, you can’t get one for under 10 grand anymore. I just paid $20k for a 2015 with 64k miles on it. The car market right now is crazy expensive
I’m about to buy a ‘11 with 150k for 10k
2015 is the best year for the 3rd generation. Toyota had already fixed all the bugs by then.
In those 320,000 miles, at what point did you need to replace the hybrid battery?
@@chrisvanegmond3157 334,000 so far and still original battery... BUT... I think in the next few months I may do a quick service on battery... Nothink more than swoping the cells around the way you do in a flashlight when they are getting a bit dim... Otherwise all good so far.
@@MrTaxidriver50005 thanks, that's really good to know. Considering getting a cheapish Aqua of similar year but worried their batteries will be EOL soon leaving me with a large repair/replace bill soon after, so just weighing up whether it's worth it.
@@imynah even if batteries became toast second hand pack shouldn't cost too much as there is very little demand as they are so problem free.
@@MrTaxidriver50005 cheers
I have a2009 iTech like this and it does NOT rattle inside at all
I have a Prius IV with just over 100,000 miles.
They should've released the Corolla Hybrid back in around about 2015...
"You have a spot for life's filth to collect here" made me LOL!!!! Thanks for that! :D
2009 totaled by a drunk driver while parked off road (!) 187,000 miles (300,950 km or so)
Another 2009 is still going at 188,000 miles
2010 with 96,500 miles
Another 2010 totaled by a teen yacking to her mom at 168,000 miles
2015 Prius v (wagon) with 105,000 miles
2013 Lexus ES 300h with 80,000 miles
Are they reliable?
Maybe worth checking that the ac works properly otherwise a very expensive fix.
not using ac can make the system deteriorate?
@@pocketstoosumo yes regular use of the ac lubricates the components and hoses and keeps the compressor in good order.
hehe, you are very enjoyable to watch. Keep making these videos 👍
Prius drivers are some of the most deadly animals out here in Los Angeles. Keeps you on your toes. Great review!
What you mean ? Hahah
My 04 has 390000 km and drives like new with original engine and hybrid battery.
I bought a 2011 prius with 230000 miles and it still worked amazingly. As it was a cab there were some interior wearing issues but regardless it was amazing to drive and kept its value as a i sold it for 500£ more
I had a race with someone driving a Prius. He was winning the first 100m then I tripped. Hahaha I'm kidding love this car
The Prius is no 0-60 champ. But I''ve blown off many sporty cars with my Chevy Bolt.
About people that buys prius don’t like cars… i do like cars! And i like to drive! But still i drive a Prius. You have different kinds of car people
I drive a 14 year old Prius successor called Auris and it makes no noise at all while driving. Like the Prius a bullet proof car!
My 2010 Prius just had it's first major repair beyond the basics like brakes, tires, and oil changes... The oil pressure sensor started leaking oil through it. The part cost me a whopping $25.
4:00 - "It's aging quite well" - agreed :)
5:00 'It's the go-to car if you don't car about cars" - I disagree. I have a Mercedes and a Lexus. My Prius is my "go-to" car for commuting to work ;)
Looks like mine!! I Love It!
Toyota Pious, for those amongst us who like to demonstrate their moral and righteous superiority as they drive along in the fast lane, below the speed limit.
The Prius V is my pick
Love the outtakes at the end! Instant LIKE👍
Thank You so much! Amazing video
You guys are awesome and the website is great to. Honest option. I bought a mazda3 2013 touring.
Thanks so much!
I have a Prius, thing has 408.000km thing never brakes down.
Aggh what year and model??!
Probably the only person that reviews cars in shorts. That's worth a follow imo
Doug DeMuro does it as well
Very intersting and informative!
With the spike in current gas prices I’m thinking of buying a Prius.
If I had to I would own a Prius rather than any LPG car
All cars in North America are LPG. They all run on Gas.
Thinking of buying one
Your thoughts? I own a 2011 Prius Five Hatchback 4D.
4-Cyl Hybrid , 1.8 Liter
Automatic , CVT, 150k miles.
A VGA colour screen?! Luxury!
One thing that can go wrong is the ABS Actuator in the 2010 model (and maybe even 2011, not sure about that).
Loved the outtakes. I drive an ‘11.
In the automotive timeline there are two distinct periods, post arse, and pre arse. Love them or hate them, they are a brilliant piece of engineering.
Great work, love it
speaking of environmentally friendly cars, could you possible do a review of a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (the plug in hybrid version). It was the first of its kind in Australia
Depends on how much you travel a day. You are either better off with a small electric because your route is short or have to charge multiple times. It does close to 10L/100km on highway because the engine is either beeing used as a generator or overdrive from (70kph?)
Love the channel, do you guys have 4k uploads planned for the future?
11:16 no no no, do NOT put LED bulbs in low and high beams.
Why is that..??
I'm looking at buying a 2012 now.
Can anyone tell me what the previous generation Prius is like? I’m in Australia too and very interested in buying a 2nd generation.
Why 2nd,wen u can buy 3rd gen
@@terryterry1655 Can’t afford 3rd Gen
I have a 2008, ( second generation. cost me 10,000 private sale ) wirh 146,000 k. September 2022. best car I've ever owned, but make sure you have complete history of servicing, parts replacement etc.. of you research a prospective car, and shop around, you should be good. make sure you feel good driving it.
good luck.
P.S. I found mine on gumtree

Can you guys do a series for used cars for first time buyers?
@Master Yoshi I mean first time buyers would be buying small cars and hatchbacks
@Master Yoshi I live in London so I can’t buy an old car because of emission regulations and whatnot but the suggests you gave are pretty popular over
What stud pattern they have? Is it 5x100 or 5x114.3?
Great video. Honda Civic next?
can you guys please do a video for small-medium hybrid cars for tall people? I'm really struggling to find one that doesn't break the bank, but I can also fit in for long driving comfortably
I'm 196cm for reference, with longer legs
It's a such a shame we've never got the Prius plug-in directly available in Australia - they seem like an excellent extension of the Prius concept without having a ridiculously huge and ridiculously expensive EV battery.
Prius Prime due in 2024. My bet is that initial volumes will be so low it will be near zero until 2025. Same price as a Tesla model 3. We were told numerous times the Prius Prime isn’t coming to Australia but the RAV4 Prime and Corolla PHEV are so just order one of those.
Except there is SFA information on when they are coming
Is this car economic car ? I’m really interested to buy one soon and I’m ready confusing I have a diesel car and the diesel price go up here in Ireland can you please advise me guys thanks
Hey mate, seeing that we’re talking about Hybrids, any chance you could find a Honda CRZ hybrid to review? I’ve had a few Honda products over the years and love them. Would like to hear your feedback.
Driven the previous generation as a taxi. There OK reliable and boring. The pruis and camry of that Era all have those plastics that squeak and rattle and the arm rests always Crack and break. Makes sense these days with the eye watering price of fuel.
Don't buy a Prius. Why? A new Camry Ascent Sport Hybrid is cheaper! I just got a brand new one. It's awesome in every way.
Let me guess your an uber driver
🎉thank you❤
Thank u very much for the not boring test. I just found u and i like the style.
I'm interested maybe in a facelift one. Do they all have no telescope steering? How is the HUD? U talked about an aftermarket Infotainment system with Android Auto, where do i get the frame to fit it? Does it has Blind Spot Monitor?
Hi, thank you for your wonderful videos. However, which one would you advise, Prius 3rd gen or Peugeot 508 Diesel hybrid 2012? Many thanks.
Prius (or Lexus CT200h) mate! Thanks for enjoying the videos too.- AK

you cant brake this car never ever i had for 6 years i am damn i sold it it was itech top range 2013 amazing car mate j m planning buying again
I like your Dad costume Adz!
Only 2 facts I know about the Prius is the official plural for a group of Prius as announced by Toyota is Prii and the battery of a Prius has half the amount of power needed to run a London tude train stored in it.
Good video guys though even though you've recommended the Prius as a car worth buying I can't see myself ever buying one as my daily drive.
Also had a question about your merch when you launch it which is are you going too do bumper sticker as well for it?
Have a good weekend guys and look forward too next week's videos.
it saves money on the driving.
DVD gps sucked even when new.
Still the greatest.
Well that's strange...usually when I'm not keen on a car Hell will freeze over before I change my mind but...You changed my opinion without any Witchcraft!!!
Are you even human 🙀
I,... Personally,... I feel sick of all those rattles in ours... We have for the daily commute drive around town
Heya team. Any plans to do a phev top 5? Would love to know about the BMW 330e or Mercedes C350e. Please
I like the Prius :)
First of all - Thank you very much for a proper and fare eye level review. I "liked" you as well.
Got a crucial question. So thinking of buying a secondhand 2014 210,000 k"m one. From a dealer so it looks great but - HOW MUCH DO I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MAINTENANCE? BATTERY? OTHER PARTS? appreciate a quick response🙂
That's what this video is about....?
Probably a bit late. I have owned 4 different Hybrid vehicles but never had a Gen3 Prius. However I believe at those Km's you should expect at least the next 3 years to be basically trouble free depending on how many Km's you do. So long as it's got a good service history it should be pretty good. I've found the Gen 2's do burn a bit of oil though. So probably should keep an eye on that.
Considering the resale value , it looks the Camry hybrids are more inspirational 😂
Best looking Prius, the latest is a mess of angles and lines.
3:44 i agree mate i aint laughing at you
Can you do mustang review and ford falcon
can you review wrx please
So you guys got the Prius that came with the LED headlights and the solar powered sunroof, we get so shafted in the US🤷🏻♂️🤦♂️😂
