Alfa Romeo Giulia (105): Restoration of the Door Sills, Part 2

  • The sills of this Giulia were in truly bad shape, but that's no surprise with an Alfa Romeo 105. Here's the second part of their restoration, including the welding of the outer sill, the repair of the floor pan and jacking point, the fabrication of a wheel arch corner and leading off the A-, B- and C-column joints.
    __
    I bought this '72 Giulia Super 1.3 in the internet, without seeing her before. Then I went to Napoli by train and transferred her home on wheels.
    You say that this is all wrong? Yes, I know.
    __
    As announced in my film, here's the link to Fitzee's video "Butt welding sheet metal the easy way."

    Thanks again for another great vid. Your patience is outstanding. I had to rewind the video twice after hearing you mention Fitzee's channel. Newfoundland is one of our neighbours. I was surprised and pleased to hear that a fellow from our Atlantic provinces had a contribution and positive influence with your build. My office has numerous pieces of memorabilia from Nfld from my travels there. Newfoundland enjoys a reputation of being filled with extremely friendly people. It's a reputation that is well deserved. You did an excellent job with good pictures and explanation to understand your steps. Thanks - it helps me a lot.
    Two questions:
    1.) In part 1 you prepared the new sill with removing the protective coat, then adding Brunox and Inox spray - my question here is: can I add the Inox spray directly to the Brunox layer?
    2.) In the end of this part 2 you added a grey layer: I guess this is just filler as a preparation for the upcoming paint job, isn't it?
    Thanks a lot and thumbs up!

    Hi, I have found this fascinating. I have a 1991 Alfa Spider S4 that has spent most of its life in Florida. It appears to be in very good condition with no external signs of rust anywhere on the body... However, I think it might be sensible to spray inside the cavities. I note your comments on the construction of the 105 sills. Is it possible to get access for spraying something like fluid A to get into the sills, and protect the inner, middle and outer sills, i.e. the cavities? The car now lives on the Isle of Man and the climate is cooler and wet! Your videos are excellent. Thank you for your hard work.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  2 роки тому

      Thanks, Mike. That’s very encouraging.
      I don’t know the Spider specifically, but I guess like the other 105 it will have access points to the cavities of the sill from inside the car. Bad news is that one needs to remove the carpet and in the first instance only the cavity between inner and middle sill can be reached. There are passages from there to the cavity between middle and outer sill but you have to find out where exactly they are.
      When I did my mate’s GT I therefore drilled holes in the outer sill. That’s a bit radical, but works very well.
      Maybe one of Jethro’s videos covers this?

    • @mikeblayney1308
      @mikeblayney1308 2 роки тому

      @@GreasyFingers Thanks for your reply... very helpful indeed. I will see if I can find any drawings of the sill components and go from there, and will look at Jethro's videos. EDIT: IGNORE ME, IM WRONG
    I'm confused. Where is the bottom of the A pillar? Surely there should be an inner piece that has the strength and holds the door up, etc. On the coupe its massive at the bottom of the A pillar and goes all the way to the bottom of the sill/chassis rail, AND then the outer sill panel goes on.
    I assume the B pillar would have a bottom too ... not just the outer panel

      The B-pillar is connected to the inner sill (see part 1 at 15:00) and to the outer sill see part 2. It’s not connected to the middle sill. Hope that clarifies things a bit. And yes, the designs of Giulia and GT/Spider are quite different.
