I am a professor of ancient history and am teaching a course right now on women in the ancient world. We're talking about women's work in the ancient period, and I am excited to use this video to show students the process of turning wool into yarn and demonstrate how women throughout the ages have spent much of their time! Thank you for this lovely tutorial.
India is becoming a super power but I had seen old men in my village doing the same thing. I am talking about 1990s.
Venus de Milo was spinning yarn before her arms were broken off.
Tried it today. Beginner. It is time consuming. But necessary. They kept everyone clothed. Now I know why many moms would threw a fit if their kids ruined their clothes they made for them. It takes a long time just to come up with a presentable yarn.
@@harshvardhansinghr Hey there,
I am an Indian,
Good to see that you all appreciate us,
Thanks
Name of the procesador?
I'm reading a book where the protagonist is using a drop spindle and I didn't even know what the heck a drop spindle was. Now I know and I can picture what is happening much clearer. Thanks for the video.
Did the protagonist subsequently have a charming Scottish accent and disarmingly gentle demeanor after watching this video?
Same.
Was it sandry from the circle of magic series? If so, same
Are you talking about Sandry?
I love how everyone here knows who it is
I could listen to your voice all day. so soothing. Lol. Bedtime stories for knitters and spinners. :)
+Fanci Berndt Agreed! So lovely and relaxing.
+Fanci Berndt I love the way she says, "Hook."
That's creepy as fuck.
+Fanci Berndt Yeah... Wish the world could go back to those times. All people involved in traditional works have sucha calm voice and beautiful hearts!
Yes i just want to knit crochet and sip tea with her😍😌
I’ve not used my spindle in years and coming across a straight forward introduction was perfect and your voice just made it all the lovelier. Thank you.
I love the tutorial. I was just curious of drop spindle, but after seeing this I want to purchase one now. I love her video, her voice beautiful and very calming. She made it very simple to understand. Love to find more of her tutorials!!!!
Thank u. Ur so calm and old school. Its nice to feel like someone who is part of this huge bustling city, like me, can calm it down and learn to spin some wool with someone as easy going and soothing as u. I needed this today. Thank u.. i came to learn a spindle but i leave with the unwind THAT I NEEDED, today
The home! the accent! The artist! The craft! ThRob Roy blanket! Thank you for a wonderful video.
Hi from Russia!!! Thank you for your class!!! Very, very good!!!! 🌷💖💖💕🌺🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
So i joined a fb group on spinning and everyone keeps talking about "park n drafting" and all these terms and making it seem so confusing i didn't even want to actually try. Your video is so straightforward im gonna give it a go. I'll let you know if i fail lol
i have 400g of colored core wool that a dishonest store sold me as good quality wool for needle felting...and i didnt know what to do until i saw this...omg thank you!!! i will make mine :D but im right handed so i guess will hold the wool with this hand God bless you!! Mexico City.
What a calm and relaxing manner you have to teach.
I've often thought about making my own yarn.
Apart from dropping the spindle it seems to be a good therapy session.
Thank you for sharing 😊
I really appreciate that you went into concept before technique! It was useful to see what spinning looked like before talking about which parts of setup mattered. Lovely video!
Thank you for your great video! Now I understand how spinning wheel can produce threads.
Nice these old hand crafts... will come back into use again as the world becomes natural and holistic.
Lovely to see the Weavers Cottage again. I lived in Cartside Terrace in Kilbarchan as a child. Happy memories. Thanks for the tutorial x
Thank you for this video!!! My husband made me a drop spindle and now I'm spinning plarn. I've started a hand bag and can't wait to finish it!!!
Again, thank you!!!
My grandmother is bringing me her drop spindle and the sweater she made from the wool she hand spun 🥰
What a great tutorial! I learned more in this video than I did reading an entire book on the subject! Thanks so much!
I saw this in a graphic novel and thought it looked neat. Might give this a try!
I'm inspired to give this a go. You have made it look so relaxing and therapeutic. Many thanks!
Your voice and energy are so maternal. It’s so comforting.
Thank you so much for this easy to follow tutorial! I just ordered my first drop spindle, and I can't wait to start spinning my own yarn. :)
Thank you for the lesson! The information, your accent, and your home are all beautiful!
I have never been interested in spinning, but always wondered how it worked. Now I think I'd like to give it a try!
Finally! A simple drop spindle tutorial that leaves out all the cluttering terminology and unnecessary steps.
Thank you for sharing, I love the gentle way you teach, you make it look so easy. I'm looking forward to trying it for myself :-)
Thank you for the in depth and simple tutorial! I have a spinning demonstration for our historic site in Georgia and this was very helpful to me!
Very good Video! Easy to follow instructions!
Thank you so much! You’re truly a flower
This is so useful to me because there's a really amazing book called Sandry's Book where the main character uses a drop spindle and I had no idea how to envision what she was doing before this :)
Lol reading that series is what got me into spinning yarn as a hobby.
@@pendelschabe that’s cool! i really want to learn how to actually spin yarn but i don’t have a spindle
@@imogenclaire1069 don’t let that hold you back! You can find spindles on Amazon pretty easily. Or, and here’s the real tea, they’re actually pretty easy to make (and super cheap, too!). You’ll need three things:
1) a wooden dowel
2) a metal hook. The kind you can screw into the end of the dowel
3) some kind of disc object. Like a wooden disk, or a round cabinet handle
For the style in the video, you want to drill a hole in the disc, insert the dowel through the hole, and secure it a few inches from the bottom of the dowel (you could probably use wood glue, or some other kind of glue, to secure it.). Actually, you might not need to drill anything. Just glue it to the bottom of the dowel. And screw the hook into the top part of the dowel. This would be a “bottom whorl” spindle.
Or, you can glue your disc to the top of the dowel, and then screw the hook into the top of that, an you’ll end up with a “top whorl” spindle. That’s the kind I have. The disc is just a cabinet handle, so it’s not very big and doesn’t add a lot of weight. It’s harder to keep spinning, but I just use the “park” method (check it out), and everything works out just fine.
As far as fiber, I just got mine off of Amazon. You can find fiber websites, too. I think fiberparadise was an online place you could get all kinds of fibers from.
Anyways, happy spinning!
@@pendelschabe thank you so much for the advice, that's really nice of you! I'll definitely try and get one. :)
This is the absolute best video I've yet seen on the subject! Of course I'm going to try it now and wind up with a mess, but great video nonetheless!
You made that look so easy. A very good teacher.
Thank you so much, you make it look so easy.
Thank you so much, I've been struggling with finger spinning a cloud of qiviut , this is a much better way!
Thank you for this video! I'm just beginning to learn to spin and this has been extremely helpful to me. Incidentally, I'm also learning Scots Gaelic, so I'll add Slàinte mhath! Thanks again!
Thank you for this tutorial. I just purchased a drop spinal, with the hook, on the opposite end of the dowel. I have seen other videos, teaching it this way. Your way makes more sense to me & I am changing my hook & doing it your way. Thank you very much !!!
Thank you for this lovely lesson! Simple and enough to get a person started!
Your home is absolutely beautiful! I love the homey feel. And such an amazingly helpful video, thank you!
I love the room where this video was taken so lovely. Thank you for the video very helpful.
Thanks for this! I just purchased two drop spindles today from a lady that can no longer do it. I am eager to learn how to use them.
scottish way of speaking sounds beautiful. thanks for the lesson
Thank you so very much for a simple and educatinal lesson🦋🦋🦋
This video is so approachable and clear!
Thank you SO much for taking the time to show us this technique!
Thank you. This was wonderful. And I love listening to you!
I’ve just picked it up and will come back to it later and look forward to it. Yes, I could listen to that voice for a long time!!
Thank you for this video! Excellent easy to understand instruction. I’m planning to buy a drop spindle soon and can’t wait to begin spinning 💓
Excellent explanation Christie! I love knitting lace but have never spun. This is a beautifully produce video.
Wow, what an interesting tool! Never knew they existed and that only a wheel was able to spin material into yarn/thread.
Hi, thankyou for a beautiful video/podcast. I'm just learning how to Drop Spindle, this is so helpful.
Thanks again.
Take care & stay safe.
Beautiful video - so encouraging! Thank you!
It's a good video that explains how to use the wheels. (가락바퀴의 사용법에 대해 잘 설명한 좋은 영상입니다.)
Excellent explained ! Thank you very much !
Great video. I love your voice. It's so soothing.
Thank you! Such a pleasant presentation.
I use a low whirl spindle too. I love it. But it always stuns me that people get the spindle going by twisting the shaft. I have a 90 gm disc on mine..quite large i realise now..it was my first. And i just give the disc a flick. Lot easier and you dont interfere with the spun yarn.yes i leave a small gap on the shaft at the top so i can use it to wind the thread on. But using the disc to spin means i can load up that shaft to the max. Also, my shaft is removeable. Yours?? Thus i have one disc and lots of shafts for a variety of colours and fibres in progress. Lovely video. I hope lots of people now want to take up spinning. I love telling people my mittens were walking around a short while ago😄
You make it sound so easy. Great tutorial! I'm getting sheep and would love to be able to spin my own yarn to sell or save to knit or crochet myself :)
Hello, did you buy your sheep and try spinning?
@@knittingbandit8493 unfortunately no. My farm truck caught fire and had health issues, so we ended up having to sell the farm
Ach lm so sad to hear this
Good tutorial . Useful , thand ya indeed , hope to see more videos from you .
I love this video and your wonderful accent!
Such a soothing voice. Wish I was nearby to take instructions. Lovely
Wonderful tutorial! Very informative with very clear instructions. Thanks!
this is a great video I am looking at ways to upcycle I have been looking to make thread or rope then to weave these into items. thanks for the video.
What i need to know is...Can we use other materials for weaving like this? such as cotton and animal hair? I am going to find a drop spindle ASAP, The time will come when we will have to back to making textiles by hand, and i am eager to start to learn now, so i can teach the younger one's....Thank you for this short yet clear and easy to understand the basic's, Bless you dear sister.
skywriter1962 there are tutorials online for making drop spindles. It's really quite easy.
You can spin any kind of fiber. Not all of them make yarn quite as easily, but it can theoretically be done.
Thank you so much for your Love and Light.
Youre a wonderful teacher. Thank you very much.😊
Hermoso trabajo la felicito gracias por entregar al mundo esto
Very helpful. Thank you!
Excellent video!!
Awesome video! Thank you for posting :)

You are an excellent teacher!
Wonderful tutorial.
Thanks. Very informative video.
well done thanks for sharing!
Excellent instruction.🐐🌲
Her voice sounds like magic spells.
Yvonne van den Vondel oh my god I love this comment
I keep finding the lead spindle whorls while metal detecting and have often wondered how the process worked.Great video.i imagine the whorls are dropped or fall off during transit from place to place or would it be common for women of the time to do this in the field?I know they played an important role because of the things I find(thimbles, jewellery, hem weights ,spoons...no vending machines in them days;-).Great stuff.
Thank you very much for the video. Now i want to go make some yarn ;)
Excelente ... !!! Thanks a lot !!!
Perfect video !!
this is what i wanted to understand,
Thankuh b’ful lady !!
It is really excellent explanation .
How to sum up the video, fabulous soothing and fabulous
👍
You have such a weirdly wholesome vibe I love it
Thank you for this educational video! It will be used greatly.
Thank you for this video! I never could figure out the secret!
I could listen to her all day.
Pretty cool! 👍
Thank you very easy to understand video.
So soothing!
Thanks for this!!✌
Nice, I was wondering how this would be done without a spinning wheel!
So nicely explained
The spinning wheel really made things a lot easier, didn't it ?
Can't wait to try your method. We have a local group of spinners who gifted me with a drop spindle but they don't use the hook at the top. I hope this method works better than the one I am currently trying to do. Thank you for the video.
Great video! You mentioned using a notch and I’d love to know hoe that works, I don’t have a hook and it’s challenging to use the notch
That was actually really cool.
She should be a teacher. Very good video
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing ,beautifull accent , did you buy the flees like that ?
Its amazing .....
