  • Much to Mark’s delight, Ryan Muckenhirn joins him and Jimmy to discuss the 300 WSM. (Sorry, Texans - there’s a lot of different pronunciations we throw around of “WSM” in this one). All of Jimmy’s joking to poke fun at Mark aside, the 300 WSM is one impressive cartridge and to quote Ryan himself, could be looked at as “The modern day gentleman’s 30-06”. That’s a big claim to make, but could it be true? We talk all about design, performance, comparisons and limitations (Just to bug Mark) in this quick podcast!

I have a custom 300 WSM that shoots 190 Berger bullets with extreme accuracy at 600 plus yards. On different occasions I have made insane shots with this rifle and it totally devastates Elk at those same distances. Two years ago I shot a legal bull in the neck at 535 yards away. The bull was walking away from me and he was about to go over the ridge out of my sight. The bull stopped and slightly quartered sticking his neck out to eat some grass. I had my scope dialed to the yardage, put the crosshairs on his neck and squeezed the trigger.. He dropped like a roach out of the sky. I’ve owned many rifles but this is hands down the most accurate rifle I’ve ever owned. It is a total killing machine. 300 WSM is a great cartridge and it is inherently accurate..

In what universe does a 308 Winchester push a 165 grain bullet @ 3000 fps? That GMX loading you're holding is rated at 2750 fps out of a 24 inch barrel. The vast majority of 308 rifles have 22 inch or shorter barrels, so 3000 fps is a pipe dream.

I have recently bought a 300 WSM custom Barrel and action I can truly say it is one of my three favorite rifles. It is highly efficient, giving the owner maximum efficiency. It is also poised to handle very long, high bc projectiles for single-feed ELR shooting. In fact this round appears to be born to run ELR matches. It's like 30 caliber platform that is hard to beat. Thank you for showcasing this awesome platform!

I argue that with today’s bullet technology, the need for projectiles heavier than 180 grains for any game in the world is unnecessary. Just nothing on this earth that will stop or not die quickly from a 165-180g TTSX or LRX at any ethical range.

Excellent overview! Yes! powder capacity is a minor WSM limitation compared to 300 Win Mag...even for 180 gr monolithic bullets, some published WSM loads are compressed loads compared to the same powder load in a 300 Win Mag. I'm a real ballistics geek. I love the science behind ballistics and precision shooting in general. That being said, I love to see advances in technology just for their own sake. Maybe not 15 years ago, but now a 300 WSM will do everything a 300 Win Mag can do in a smaller, more efficient package. That just makes me feel good, the idea that we can still make things better.

Since then I have picked up several others including the browning a bolt and a blr. I hunt texas and alaska and find the 300wsm my go to for all my rifle hunts usinh the 180g nosler loads. I am also a huge fan of the 325wsm which is an 8mm version of the rifle that works well in a 200g configuration. Pre Win Short Mag days, my eyes leaned towards a .300 or a .330 Dakota. However a "no B.S." writer in the 80s gave the Dakota a dismal ratings concerning the mechanical ability to feed reliably. Some of the first Win mod 70s chambered for the .270WSM were sent back to the factory for feeding problems. So I dropped the idea of owning a short mag and relied on my old 8mmRem Mag. Waiting to see what's in store for necking up the .300PRC, maybe .358. Really enjoy your videos, accurate information. And welcome to handloading rookies, be safe.

300 WSM was designed around having a shorter barrel length. In fact you don't lose much velocity compared to some other by having a shorter barrel length. This makes the 300 WSM ideal for shooting suppressed with a 20 inch barrel and a 6 inch suppressor. Still maintaining a 500-700 yard capable elk gun (if you can't close the gap), fairly compact and hitting like a truck.

I remember reading about this when it came out and I was in high school. To me this cartridge is proof that there's more to the success of new rounds than fads and hype and marketing. The gun mags tossed their hats in the air and cheered in the bright new era of hyperefficient short action magnums. They did more with less and shaved a few ounces off a full magnum action, so they got chambered into flyweight guns. They sold a few, made a bunch of other short mags, then it turned out nobody wanted a magnum of any length in a 5 pound rifle. The hype, she died. Appreciate hearing about this from 20 years later.

For what its worth I bought a 325 wsm..when they 1st came out & ended up selling it because I prefer my 300 wsm .It can do pretty much what a .325 can do with less recoil and much better ammo selection.

    • @cody1606
      @cody1606 2 роки тому +1

@@mk-xh6jt Nothing against the 300 WSM, it's a good caliber and ammo is easily found. I've sadly been turned off the 300 WSM due to a friend constantly pushing it. For ammo the 300 WSM has more variety but the 325 WSM has had more options come out since it was introduced, especially if you load your own rounds.

Now I don't own, or have I ever shot a 300WM, but my understanding is the 300WSM has less felt recoil just because it is more efficient (less powder needed for equal velocity produced). This was not mentioned as an advantage, and for me is a pretty important one. It doesn't make sense to me, but I have experienced significant recoil from a 30-06 in a Thompson Center Encore, whereas the recoil of my 300WSM Winchester Classic Model 70 is fine. I pretty sure the 300WM recoil is more than the 30-06. Maybe someday I will get to try all three in similar rifles and that will shed some light on this.

I’ve been thinking about upgrading my ELR .308 to a barrel and bolt change to a .300 WSM not I’m setting it up for a single shot ELR application where seating depth can. E as long as possible for the 220’s 230’s and 245 Berger’s do you think it would come close to the .300 WM

Happy I have been watching these gentleman for awhile now, as I can understand the "inside jokes" on the .300 WSM... with that said, what a great episode with the jocularity AND education (history of said WSM). Great banter between Mark and Jim and EXCELLENT information from Mr MuckenhIrn. Personally I like the .300 Win Mag, alas I unfortunately have never had the opportunity to fire a .300 WSM.
Suggestions... how about .50 cal :-))

The issue is that you'll eat into your case capacity running the longer bullets in the "older" chamberings. ie 6mmCM vs 243 or 6.5CM vs 260Rem.

+1 on Brennan’s comment. And many can and should get airtime in several episodes. I’d love to see dedicated series(kind of like your NATO series) on African dangerous game cartridges. African plains game cartridges. American elk cartridges. And each series starting at the beginning of the need for said cartridges. Throughout the 20th century. And into this one. And your opinions on what the future might hold. Some star attractions imo would be 300 H&H, 404 Jeffery, and 9.3x62 just to name a very few. Some of the cartridges you already covered could be covered again but only in the context of being an elk cartridge. It’s history as such. Many, many candidates. And other categories such as sheep and goat, etc. Keep up the great work, guys. Love seeing the notification pop up for Vortex Nation!

I'm a big fan. Run a pretty mild load with 165gr Sierra TGC at 3100fps. I know I could run it hotter and maybe I will if the need arises but the slightly light load is a lot easier on brass and still does everything I could ask for.

Yup. I shoot a Sako 85 300 wsm and it's favorite is a 168 gr TTSX with a lighter dose of IMR 4350. Don't need it any hotter. Also load the 180 gr Accubonds and they shoot well with same powder. The 300 wsm covers all of my hunting needs in Wyoming, but even with reloads a little pricey for prairie dogs-they get the .223 Wylde...
