Troy Waters had the heart of a lion to withstand a Terrible Terry Norris combinations like that. He also had a phenomenal jab straight right combination which landed on Terry giving him the most trouble. He throws it so un telegraphed which Terry couldn't see it coming, look at when Terry gets up from the knockdown the first punch Troy throws is a straight right without telegraphing it at all. SWEET SCIENCE.

This was Terry Norris in a nutshell. Comes out fast and puts Waters on the canvas plus the point deduction for hitting him on the floor then it nearly ends in disaster before Terry's class prevails. All in 3 wild rounds.

Came close to getting himself knocked out in a fight he should be winning with little trouble. As soon as he found out Waters was easy to hit he just unloaded with zero care to his defence. Didn't learn from this at all as he fought the same way against Simon Brown 2 fights later, difference being that Brown was a much better fighter than Waters, so Norris gets knocked out. Exciting to watch but tactically reckless. He could easily have picked Waters off, won every round and probably stopped him late on. Fighting the way he did gave Waters a puncher's chance.

Everyone makes excuses for Norris which is nonsense. He was a sucker puncher when he saw the opportunity without question. He knew what he was doing. When he tried that in the Sugar Ray Leonard fight I lost all respect for him. The Luis Santana fight he sucker punches him in two different bouts and gets disqualified. Look at his record numbers don't lie. He has 3 losses due to DQ. Stop saying it was in the heat of battle or poor judgment it is just called a sucker-punch. Hitting someone when their down on not looking.

@@barrybarnes96 Can work great against a fighter who throws a lot of straight shots - jabs and right hands (see: Witherspoon v Larry Holmes), but against someone like Norris who has every punch in the book, is fast, aggressive and throws great short hooks and uppercuts you are asking for trouble. Waters best chance (not much of one tbh) here would be to try to pot shot at range as he had a decent jab, then try to tie Norris up in close. Ducking his head down he couldn't see the shots at all and was just relying on his gloves to save him. We can see how that worked out. This must have set a record for punch accuracy (for Norris) and shots landed by one guy in a 3 round fight.

Norris was considered one of the best after Chavez and Whitaker at this time. Compared to the two, Norris showed more moments of mortality. You talk about him coming back after nearly being KO'd in the 2nd but he shouldn't be in that position in the first place. Troy Waters was considered a nobody which is why they said it would be the upset of the decade if Norris lost.
Norris had a good record but his notable victories were against boxers past their prime like Leonard and Mugabi and a worn-out boxer like Meldrick Taylor. He also didn't unify his belts against guys in his division like Julio Cesar Vasquez (WBA), Gianfranco Rosi (IBF), John David Jackson (WBO), Verno Philips (WBO). That's most likely not completely on him though, but both Chavez and Whitaker where able to unify their belts around this point.

A lot of greats had suspect chins, but it doesn't mean they weren't great.
Tommy Hearns comes to mind. Hearns is a legend but he lost to Iran Barkley, someone who shouldn't have lost to. He nearly lost to James Kinchen too because of that chin. Felix Trinidad would get dropped regularly too (Campas, Reid, Carr).
The only losses Norris had in his prime were Julian Jackson, who was one of the hardest hitters in history and Simon Brown, who was a former P4P entrant. The Norris learned and boxed his way to an easy win. His later loss to Keith Mullings was Norris being on the downward slide as he lost his next 2 fights before retiring.
Norris just had a tendency to brawl more than was sometimes necessary.

He dropped Norris with a good shot and did land some decent stuff but Norris was outlanding him 10 to 1 and it was getting dangerous how many shots he was eating. His chance of an upset had arrived and gone in the 2nd, it was mostly a painful watch in round 3.
