So I recently moved back from China to the UK. In the process I spent around 3 months off the bike. Let's see how much power I've lost in that time, and my plans to get the power back!

Great video Jarrod. Congrats on getting back on it and good luck in your Triathlon training. 🙌

I can relate to the loss of power. Between holidays and being sick a couple times, I lost a similar percentage off my FTP. I'm sure you'll bounce back fast, though! Good luck preparing for your events; I'm looking forward to watching your progress!

Great to see you back dude! Jesse Coyle does a very interesting video about taking time off and returning, and testing so soon after returning. He calls it a state of readiness, after 1-2 weeks of being back it is then best to test yourself as you will have a much more accurate ftp compared to kinda testing straight away. It gives a more accurate result. Nevertheless.... glad to see you back and looking forward to seeing some new content. (nice updated groupset ;))

Oh cool, I'll check it out! I'll definitely do another ftp test in a few weeks, and maybe there will be a big increase already!
      Groupset video coming next week!

Good to see you back. Good luck with both the power and the diet. I have to tell you that I have struggled with my weight for decades.
When it comes to the diet, I think you're like me, as Professor Royt Taylor at Newcastle University said , when it comes to weight loss if you've got a good appetite, you've got a big problem. In.other words if you want to find it easy to lose weight choose your parents very carefully.

My son and I did some paired training, we had a loop which had a very intense uphill section. I gauged my performance level by how I could perform after the steep section. Towards the end (and our journey to China) left me waiting at the top for my son who never made it up without stopping

You'll get it back, but I think you're either making some errors with terminology or your thinking. Volume equals total time in the saddle. Intensity equals how hard that time is. Load is a calculation of time vs intensity. You are correct that high intensity work makes it difficult to lose weight, I felt the same. But, you should have a good mix of high intensity (usually 2 in the week) plus Z2 fillers to build out your total volume and weekly load. Following some trainer road or similar plan will get you back on the fast track to improvement and the weight will come off on its own. Obviously I'm not a trainer, just an average guy who started at 105kg 2 years ago and now down to 77kg. This winter was my first experience with a smart trainer or power meter of any sorts and improved my FTP and w/kg by 240w (2.7w/kg) to my current 275w (3.7w/kg) by following this type of plan. I am smashing all my previous PR's on my local routes this year. It's simply amazing.

Ah yeah, you're right, got it a bit mixed up there! Definitely going to be doing more low intensity z2 just to burn the calories, and then just one high intensity zwift race per week.
That's fantastic progress, if I get anywhere near that I would be very happy!

@@JMower Thanks, I'm super impressed tbh. I'm over 40 and don't have a coach. Just designed my plan based on what I've read and seen on UA-cam. That and zwift TTT been kicking my butt once a week. Good luck with the training!

Great video, not to stress you´ll get back to the power level soon, or even surpass it actually. Just wondering have you ever considered using something like Humango for the Tri training?

    • @JMower
      @JMower  4 місяці тому

Thanks! I'm very new to tri training, so I haven't really looked into any of the other apps except for trainerroad. I'll look into Humango and give it a go!

Good to see you back, hope you're now settled in. Stick to the Z2 rides, but try to do shorter ones (1-1.5H) in a fasted state as this will make your body burn fat as fuel. If you're out on the roads just be sure to take a snack with you incase you need the energy and only use water in the bottles. I'm doing long (200km+) events this year so my higher efforts will be generally tempo rides with maybe an over/under session once every 3-4 weeks. I have cut out a lot of the higher efforts and my FTP is still going up, slowly, but in the right direction. ATB Leigh.

Cheers! Yeah I'm doing all my rides in the morning before eating, so far most of them have been quite short, nothing longer than 1.5 hours yet, then I just have a normal breakfast when I get back. Hopefully a weekly zwift race will be enough of a higher effort session each week.

3 months off = 3 months to rebuild - Much better views in the UK and those rolling roads are great :) Good luck, keep the posts coming.

Its quite obvious your problem is your diet which you keep avoiding to address. Changing training plans is not needed, just concentrate on riding elevation at least 5000m a week then you will probably be burning 5000 cals a week so no dieting needed. Doing long endurance rides does not mean burning more calories. Doing 1000m climbs will take around an hour so no need for ftp tests as real world power, as you progress to higher climbs less workouts needed ! Rouvy is better than zwift for this. Good Luck. Just concentrate on the harder stuff like climbing as you burn more calories and progress quicker.

what an unscientific pile of garbage. best way to reduce weight is to reduce intensity and increase volume, since the body metabolises more fat than glycogen during lower itensities. if you do it the other way around and dont eat enough you can not complete your workouts because your chronical empty glycogen storage which results in fatigue, as he mentioned in the video. also 1 specific HiT and threshold workout/week is more than sufficient rising your oxygen intake without affecting future training. you are right that reducing weight equals a caloric deficit but hammering up a 1000vm 5 times a week is not the way to go when you want to increase performance while losing weight.

That's terrible advice, and I'm sure he knows enough about training to recognise that.
Just doing high intensity work is not recommended by ANY professional coaches or athletes. That's the fast way to overtraining and illness. Plus, doing all high intensity work won't improve mitochondrial function in the same way as doing longer zone 2 rides will. This is well known.

@@sirclemeni1 Wow 5hrs a week is to hard, I thought since he's racing he should be aiming for up to 1200 tss per week ?
5000m is only around 500 tss at zone 3.
