Looking forward to the seeing the performance of that stockpiled field next spring, with all those root exudates from the rest period it should be good.
I have just about finished building my own wire lifter and am hoping to test it out this winter to see how it does. Like the idea of taking it inside though as an alternative.
That’s some impressive litter… I wouldn’t clean it up if I were you, it’ll do wonders for your recovery period. But if you only graze it once a year… I guess it doesn’t matter
Your grass obviously holds its nutrition very well. I'm wanting to implement non-selective grazing at 3 moves a day but I'm being told that to rest my grass for an entire growing season would be detrimental. The grass here losses most of its nutrition in the winter and lignifies very quickly. When I talk about supplementing with lower quality grass I'm told that I'm wasting my time. Do you think you can selectively graze during the growing season to utilize good forage, take into consideration the correct rest period for optimal recovery and then graze non-selective in the winter?
@@runningtfarmsnc So sorry for these late replies. Nothing is planted (all veld) and I would say mostly consists of C-4 perennials (and lots of 'weeds').
To get a better harvest...🤔 so do that mean you got plenty of grass if your still trying to take it all? Why not save some this time of year to come back through it? Can't think you will get growth this time of year
@@brettpayton6286 If I don’t take it all in one pass they will selectively graze the best parts of the sward and since as you pointed out we’re not getting any regrowth what would be left would be of poor quality likely below what the cows would require to maintain body condition without a protein supplement. By harvesting as much of the sward as possible it increases our conversion efficiency. We have plenty of stockpile to graze until the next growing season is well underway. I always like to make the very best use of our forage and always have other options in case of unforeseen events. Extremely wet winter (where harvest efficiency can go down by up to 75% in extreme cases) very late or dry spring, or any other thing i can’t predict. By always using our forage as efficiently as possible we give ourselves the most options anytime of the year but especially in the winter/non growing season.

Love your farm set up 🇳🇿🙏🏼

Looks like your cattle definitely won't go hungry.
Great video as always, thanks for sharing Josh.
How many years has this field been in UHSD grazing? The forage looks great.
A year and 1/2. Was grazed twice last year and allowed to rest this year.
Sure looks amazing. Some good management.

We will graze it likely 3-5 times next growing season. Depending on the season of course.

@@Vaughn_Bruce86 Where are you located?
@runningtfarmsnc sorry for the late reply, I'm in a high summer rainfall area in South Africa.
@ Are you mostly warm season C-4 perennial grasses?

How cold does the freeze mizer work until?
@@mitchellgood3359 We have successfully used them with temps in the teens.
