    • @runningtfarmsnc
      @runningtfarmsnc 2 дні тому

      We still offer shade most of the time via a lane for access. The Mashona influenced cattle are very heat adapted but we still have a good number of Angus cattle that have to have access to shade. We are getting rid of them and replacing them as quickly as we can economically. We don’t have any Mashona influenced cattle for sale at this time.

      We will move twice per day at double the normal area. If it’s extremely wet we will reduce stock density even further and do once daily or maybe every two days. We will do whatever we need to to minimize pugging.

    • @runningtfarmsnc
      @runningtfarmsnc 10 днів тому

      We have never had to supplement any protein to our cattle. If supplemental protein is needed I would use the highest protein possible at the cheapest price that meets your production practices. Soybean meal or cotton seed meal would be examples. For us we would use Very high quality organic Alfalfa as we don’t use any grains and want no chemicals on our farm. We hope to never have to supplement because of our fescue and proper timing of our calving season to lower cows nutrient requirements through winter. But should we find we would need to it would be very high quality organic alfalfa hay.

      @@timshirk6261 No sir I haven’t done any testing.

    • @timshirk6261
      @timshirk6261 Місяць тому

      @@runningtfarmsnc the reason I ask is because ours are very high from to much manure applied in past years. This makes for grass and all plants to grow better but it is more potassium than cows should have and so there manure is very high in it as there body expels it quickly. This means that after a graze like you do and all the manure pats the next growth will be higher yet in potassium. I thought maybe if your levels are low perhaps that is not as big of a deal. Will they evenly graze following a graze from a few months ago with heavy manure or do they still graze around manure pats ?

    • @runningtfarmsnc
      @runningtfarmsnc Місяць тому

      @@timshirk6261 Fairly evenly but we always have a little refusal around old manure pats. They will eat the top 2/3 usually but leave the bottom where the pat was. We have a pretty good dung beetle population but we need more to bury the manure quicker post grazing. But we’ll get there Rome wasn’t built in a day. I would suspect that this farm could have elevated potassium levels maybe the previous leaseor did apply chicken litter fairly frequently but also made hay on this particular part of the farm for the last several years he had it. It’s pretty productive so I would imagine nutrient levels are still pretty good. We don’t apply any fertilizers of any kind so if something is out of balance we will let management, nature and time work that out.

    • @timshirk6261
      @timshirk6261 Місяць тому

      @@runningtfarmsnc thanks and makes sense. The first growth of year does not have this problem from last years manure and this first growth is also the one that should be non selectively grazed all the way down within a day so there is no stems left behind. However following that there will be fresh manure pats and the following graze if they only graze tops that is ok as what is left behind is leafy. I think there is a disconnect in that hot maybe dry summer grazes don’t need the same heavy graze and the early spring simply due to stems versus leafs and cooler wetter weather vs hot dry normally. That being said still important to graze non selectively so all plants get same impact, just not as low in hot dry summer

    • @runningtfarmsnc
      @runningtfarmsnc 2 місяці тому

      @@zhostetler3 A couple of things. 1 it gives you an idea of production per acre so you can compare year over year to see if you are improving your land base. Of course there will be variations between years due to weather conditions but it is one of the single best metrics of land improvement. 2 We know that most winters we can only average around 200 cow days per acre harvested on our stockpiled areas due to our wet reasonably mild winters so we know how to adjust our stocking rate once the growing season is over to make sure we have enough stockpile for our cattle. We have a goal to be able to graze 1 animal unit per acre with no winter feeding in order to do that we need to average 365 cow days per acre across every acre of the farm for an entire year. We are getting closer to our goal.

      @@warrenmaker798 Yes but your guys forages and management should be used to a semi arid or seasonal rainfall environment.
