A shop is always evolving so changes are easier with pegboard and still keep things neat. I mounted 4 x 8 foot pegboard on 3 walls of my garage with the long end horizontal. This leaves room under the pegboard for storage. This system has evolved from family storage to mechanical and currently woodwork/hobby shop. I never regretted doing this. A good way to test if you like pegboard is to mount a pegboard backing on your workbench and play with the tool organization. Be careful, the tool reconfiguring can become obsessive.

Best video out there for pegboard uses. Our tools have a very few commonalities (pliers, screwdrivers, scissors) but you showed up close the different hooks and how you used them. In the next few weeks I'm getting a pegboard mounted above my work table and am hoping that it will allow my work table to be mostly clear while I'm working if that makes sense. Thank you!

When we moved into our house the previous owner had 2 large pieces of pegboard handing already in the garage. My best tools I keep in my locked toolbox but I do keep tools I use constantly on the pegboard such as a #2 Phillips, slip-joint pliers, side cutters, scissors, and wood saw among others. That way it’s easy, quick access since it’s right above my work bench; I can just keep working and not take time opening drawers.

Trying to get all my tools organized for the first time in a long time, and I notice I have a problem with never remembering what I have. I'll work on a project and buy some new tools, only to later find that I already had one of those tools, but because it wasn't readily findable or visible I bought another one. Recently in this work I've discovered that 6" 3/8ths socket extensions are apparently quite useful, because I have about 12 of them!
This guy reminds me a lot of myself, going through the tool store and grabbing stuff saying "Now THIS will be handy if I need it!", only to actually need it sometime, not remember I have it, then later after I finish the job, find it and go "BLEEP I forgot I had this damn thing!".
To this end, I just recently completely cleaned out and modernized my basement, built a nice workbench and shelf, and last night installed my pegboard wall.

Good stuff. Likewise I'm more of a visual guy and find stuff far faster when on a pegboard. I've gone as far as turned it into a shadow board. Ill tape up my tools then spray paint over so if I look at the board and I see something missing I know exactly what it is.
Also can appreciate having the tools most needed closest. Less steps = more productivity.

I love pegboards. They're great. I have hooks falling off as well. I'm thinking about adding a tiny segment of a 1/4" drip line tube to the bottom pin of the hook so it fits the pegboard hole tightly, that way it won't fall out.

Hadn't considered a dark grey -- was that for visibility/contrast re: the tools hanging in front of it, or purely an aesthetic preference?

The Milwaukee Fuel Series brushless Motor drill and impact driver is the best set of drills and drivers on the market hands down!! I just picked up a set of the fuel Series the same you use in this video. After being a Dewalt only guy for almost my entire life just because they my dad used it. I needed to buy a new set of drills/drivers and after doing my homework I found this fuel line by Milwaukee, and even though they are the most expensive set that any hardware store carries they are the BEST set that the store will carry! I just wanted to point that out because I have switched from buying Dewalt to Milwaukee tools, and I see your a Milwaukee tool guy too. I didn’t think there would be a difference until I made the switch, and let me tell you!! Way better quality of tool in every way possible!! Thanks for the video I got a lot of good ideas for my garage!

Great video. I never thought to ask about your tool organization but I’ve been very curious about your set up as we see several shots of your peg board in many videos. I have all my tools in rolling chests and it worked well when I worked in a shop. Now that I’ve changed professions and don’t use my tools often I find I’m opening several drawers to find what I’m looking for. I need to build myself a work bench and I’ve been considering going to peg board for my tools. Although I’m beginning to think their is no perfect tool organization solution you gave me some good things to consider.

I agree there is no perfect tool organization solution but we must strive to do our best. In my dream shop I have an entire wall of pegboard with darn near every tool organized by their purpose. That would be sweet!
I think a 42" rolling chest with swing open top would be a great rolling setup. The sockets on top along with the screwdrivers and other common tools. It must be so nice not to have to walk back and forth all day to get tools.
      Thanks for watching.

Peg boards are great imo, the way I use them since my space is limited to put them in is the following. I use them only to hang tools that I’m using on any current project. When done with such projects which usually takes me a week or so 😂 I clean them and put away in their drawers. My OCD needs to have everything away and protected from dust and out of view. My table needs to be CLEAR at all times, if not I can’t start a new project. Cool video tho, is nice to see how everyone does things so differently yet we try to accomplish the same outcome. Organization!!! 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

You can buy spray or can of dipping rubber paint “Plasti Dip” available at box stores, harbor freight, Ace hardware. Just dip the handles in blue color rubber coating for. Just something that will help quickly identify between metric and SAE tools. Just a suggestion. Thanks again for the tour of your tool organization.

It is probably because the title is vague. Most people were probably looking for a how to video about hanging a pegboard not a tour of some strangers garage. Elexcellet video though!

I like your garage brother getting a home pretty soon so been snooping around looking at other folks places , I have an addiction to tools as well 50% of my tools were free I would go on Craigslist and offer up and put “free tools” and would go grab them also a buddy’s uncle passed and he saw my addiction to tools and liked that I came over to help him or his nephew so he left me a full snap on tool cart with multiple snap on tools Mac tools and pluepoint tools (he was a mechanic) other than that not even 10% of my tools have been bought by me I have about 3 truck loads of them too

@1:28, agree 100%. Drives me nuts to see a tool box all mixed up.

Finally got sick of fumbling around through a zilliion HD buckets for stuff. I'm constantly losing things, looking for things, finding things I was looking for previously but not currently, and I really enjoyed this video. I noticed that 1992 double tape deck compact stereo you got there on the shelf! I had one of those back in the day as well in high school ahahahahahahahaha!
I bought a bunch of different smaller pegs at HarborFreight. With this craziness due to COVID I'm trying not to go out unecessarily. Picked up 3 pieces of the 2' x 4' traditional wood pegboard at the Depot today as well. I used 6 1/4" x 1 1/4" washers behind the boards to give me some space to easily install the attachments. What's silly about the HD pegboards is that installed horizontally or vertically the boards are screwed up in terms of the spacing of the holes - it just doesn't line up but luckily with 1/8" attachments you get a little wiggle room in the holes. I don't think it will work with 1/4" pegs though.
I don't know how big your garage is but it looks like you could install some plywood in the ceiling and have some additional storage space without risking anything falling down. Of course that entails building some stairs. I have an old 1947 Cape with those miniature afterthought garages that is barely wide enough for me to fit my MINI in. No way the Tacoma or the Sienna is fitting in there! Next up will be ripping out the sheetrock in the ceiling and building some stairs so I can get up there.
Btw I wanted just the locks so I found those on Amazon as well.
Keep up the good work John. I really enjoy your videos.

Hey pardner. You do you. If it works for you.. peg on. I'm trying to figure out what works best for myself at the moment.. have some pegboard but haven't put it up yet.. a combination of peg and drawers is probably what I'll do too. The nice thing about peg is you can see when something isn't where it belongs.

@8:21 nice of you to keep that screwdriver up there, I got my dad the same deal when I was a kid and he explained to me that cheap tools are worthless and not to be used. I never saw that thing again LOL

I tried the Talon peg board pegs and they really hold well to the pegboard. I did have to re design and modify almost everyone to hold the tool I wanted the way I wanted it. The biggest problem was the screwdrivers were free to flop around a lot. The Talons are expensive and I would never buy the group of 48 again.

Pegboard is great for the tools you use all the time. I can also spot in an instant if a tool is missing. Then I can figure out where I could have left it or whether my son has run off with it.

I am a pegboard hater But i loved your rundown of the setup.
Recently I compromised on the idea of a tool board, by hanging a 2x6 8’ long and drilling my own hooks. For me, if i see too much stuff hanging, i go tool blind. I need a horizontal lineup so i know where to look for my stuff. I prefer drawers with labels But things like wrenches on the wall look nice 👍🏼 or speedsquares that i use all the time!

I definitely prefer the wood peg board in case I need to put a screw through it to hang something. Like, my drill bits came in a container that hung, but the width between mounts wasn't perfectly lined up with the beg holes. So, I just put a screw through wherever that spot lined up. So, I'm a lover of it!
