I have Aqua Green in my main Palette myself! I love teal and colors with big contrast between masstone and diluted tones, not to mention it's also a single pigment paint (the specific phthalo pigment it uses is Palomar Turquoise, a property pigment with no number code), so I really enjoy it 🙌✨️ I use it for plants/trees in general. It's also good for dark, atmospheric backgrounds...and if you mix it with quin rose it makes a pretty, cool black 😁👍
oomggg "colors with big contrast between masstone and diluted tones" --- YES! ME TOO! watercolor... it's the only medium that can do that~ mix with quin rose? i'll neeed to try that!!! XD thank u!
@notsogood_nsg I edited my comment to, in part, thank everyone for saying the cool ways they use this color... but I wanted to let you know here how much I appreciated hearing that :) I wanted to buy it so much, but I only could because of having a small bit left of a gift card, otherwise not an option... so I looked for ideas and thoughts about it because it's my favorite color for sure, but I need it to be useful if I'm using up the last bit of that card.... but this video and your comment helped go for it so wanted to say thank you! I think its awesome when people share things they do back n forth... then we can all try new things. Anyway... sorry, just an excited old lady with a new tube of paint, well 2, I bought this color and potters pink that is a super good mixing color as well. So, clearly I babble when I'm excited. I'm hoping my hands will work tomorrow so I can swatch them properly. Thanks again :)
I love the color, but this pinholes sooooo much on my favorite papers. It's an automotive pigment called Palomar Turquoise. It's very similar to the hue of Daniel Smith's mixed phthalo turquoise (not the PB 16 one)
I love aqua green. I feel is very similar to Daniel Smith pthalo turquoise, but the one that has two pigments in it, not PB16. However I still like Aquagreen much better. Is a basic in my palette. I use it alone for hummingbirds or backgrounds. Or mix it with permanent rose for moody blues or vibrant purples. I use it instead of phtalo green. I like phtalo green just fine, but aquagreen is special ❤
I LOVE this color and yes it is very strong. It's really great for shadows! I too was confused about the phthalo pigment. I use it both as a turquoise and foliage shadows, of course it's wonderful for water too!
I and others have seen that statement on artiscreation and it does make me wonder. Note that the flocculation is prevented at the manufacturing stage, not the paint making stage, or so I understand. You have to remember that in all probability, only watercolour artists want granulation. Most pigment users don’t value granulation.
It is. Naturally most phthalo and quinacridones flocculate and have more than one color, but since that’s not what a lot of people want, they add things for them to be one stable color. Jackson’s art pigments are like that, they flocculate in the strangest way.
I've found my M Graham quins, phthalos and anthraquinone blue all flocculate. They didn't when I forst bought them, it's weird. Not what I like in a phthalo pigment, tbh.
Phthalo is the correct spelling of the word pronounced 'they low' . I use oyhrr winsor and newton colours too. Cobalt green (PG50), Aqua (phthalo) and Cobllt Turquoise Light (PG50) form a lovely sequence of green to blue through the turquoise / teal ranges. Great for seascapes close to the shore and the sea around white sand beaches. I have used Aqua almost as a primary blue to get a wide range of colours with Opera Rose and Transparent yellow. Varying the intensity of colour dilution and using its transparency means its easy to get some lovely darks, interesting shadow washes and pine tree needles. Aqua is perfect for Norwegian spruce trees and cold light on Scots pine trees. It's my go to colour for Christmas pine needles up close contrasting robins and making the darks on closed pine cones and as they open.
Thank you for this, Vee. You are right, not many artists on UA-cam use w&n aqua green. The only artist I know of who uses it in some of the botanical art is Anna Bucciarelli, a Canadian artist whose art can be found on Canada's coins. I am tempted to try it after your comparison. Granulation pthalos would definitely be amazing to use.
it's definitely one of those special colours in my opinion :D Anna? i dont think of heard of her, of maybe i have seen but don't remember her name, i'll check her out! thanks meh! ;D
@@PaintinHiding😀 on her channel, there is a vid titled how to paint realistic green leaves where she uses the Aqua green from W&N. You will like her channel too.
I am rather new to her Patreon channel and have just received my WN Aqua Green today as she uses it frequently when working with leaves. It is a very beautiful mix with other greens that I could not get easily mixing myself so I now own a tube of this lovely color! Big smile here
I have not tried Aqua Green, but I would love, love, love to try it. I, like you, see it as a turquoise, not a green. It is one ore two steps removed from PG7, phthalo greens. I consider PG7 to be the very first “proper” green in pigments; any bluer and it becomes a turquoise.
I love this color so much, and it is different enough from other turquoise colors that I have to justify keeping it. You could mix something pretty darn close by adding PG7 to PB16, but it still would not have the same character :)
Thank you for showcasing this color, I have had my eye on it for quite a long time actually 😊 I am interested in trying it, since I use a lot of pthalo blue and green (also mixes of these two), for layering and staining techniques. I think I tend to like greener turquoises more lately too! The granulation makes it even more interesting, I agree that the option of granulating pthalo paints would add a lot of diversity to many palettes.
ooooh i bet you'll love it as much as i do! hopefully manufacturers make more granulating phthalos! and maybe it could be the new trend of the next decade haha
I love this color. It's gorgeous, very much an exceptionally beautiful version of phthalo turquoise. I ordered it immediately when it was new, but then I have to have all the turquoises.
I use Aqua Green as a blue colour. Try deliberately wetting the paper right next to the fully dried swash of aqua green and let the phthalo blue separate!
I wonder if the phthalos are ground so finely that they don't get a change to granulate. I would love more granulating phthalos! I don't have Aqua Green yet but it's on my list. I bet it makes lovely greys and blacks when mixed with Quin Magenta.
This is the first Phthalo I really like! For cool greens, I generally prefer Viridian (which I love) or Cobalts. But this is lovely without the acid-neon element that some Phthalos have that I dislike. Great value range and texture!
I just bought 1 tube of this... only because i have a gift card... and i know I'll LOVE it!! Green blue.... any ocean type colors, but I most definitely lean towards the green .... you know.... ok, im actually going to go add another tube of it because i know it'll be my favorite!! Thank you!!!😊 Edit... ok, Amazon got this to me pretty fast!! And it was on sale, in case anyone needs it. Well, as of today 9.29.23.. a 15ml tube of Winsor & Newton professional paint for$15 and change... almost $18 with tax, for me at least. It says "overstock" .. and my word its a gorgeous color!! And I love hearing how many ways all you use it!! Makes me very excited! I'm old and my body is very very broken, so, my mind is dying to draw or paint, but the body is not often willing. But, reading the comments about how its used and getting super inspired us awesome and helps me keep my head together so that when my body gives me an hour to move or a bit less pain, then I remember all these fun new things to try :) So, I truly love and appreciate hearing, in the video and in the comments, all these awesome ideas! Thanks so much!!!💕😊
I wish that info was there as it is for PB16 as in it is a good lightfast pigment but not excellent rating. So I wish that info were known for this color but I use it anyways.
I love this color, but I find it really annoying than Winsor Newton doesn’t give the pigment number. They do that with their cadmium free colors also. What’s up with that?🤨 I have been swatching all of my PB 16 varieties and they are all more blue than Holbein, but I wonder if a little of aqua green would give you that same color? Thanks for sharing, Vee😘
Someone else mentioned this in the comments already, but this is a single pigment that doesn't have a pigment code. The cad-free colours are mixes, and apparently they aren't all super lightfast! I can't remember where I saw lightfastness tests for them, maybe Kimberly Crick's (Krick?) blog. Anyway, at least a couple of them faded.
i know~ tbh i'm annoyed with the no-pigment-number just for youtube video making purposes LOL. if it has a number, i can just be like... "made with blah blah blah!" hahahhaa
I've been wanting to try that line, the jewel tones they released as a special selection. The other interesting color is their "Smalt" blue hue, which isn't really smalt blue. Daniel Smith Pthalo Turquoise is PB 15:3, PG 36. I wonder if their old formulation was PB16. Thanks for your video! Very interesting.
I just saw the preview in my feed and was like: “yaaaaay!” Love it, happy that you love it. I was first thinking to buy 15ml tube, but it’s so strong, I’m not sure I will really use up 5ml soon 😅
Wasn’t sure if this would live up to my expectations, but so far I have been really amazed by Aqua Green. It mixes so well with other colours to produce great greens, violets, darks and a whole lot more. The granulation is a real bonus as well, even if it’s not that pronounced. I’m planning to modify my palette to incorporate this, so thanks for the video…I wouldn’t have tried this colour otherwise. 😊😊😊
I think more than any other PTHALO, that is what I would call a true turquoise! Because of the color that it dilutes too, looks closest two turquoise water… Whereas the turquoise stone, looks more like a cobalt teal. So beautiful!
I have tried both colors myself, can say that Shinhan's Marine Blue is more blue-ish than Aqua Green, and it has no granulation present. It's not a huge difference but still noticeable.
Hmmm. My aqua green is 100% smooth, no granulation. Is it possible your brush was contaminated? Or maybe your tube is weird? Mine wasn't separating. I'm very suspicious of the artistcreation website assertion that phthalos granulate naturally. They are extremely small particles... and the way I understand it, the small particles spread better and thus do not show up as granulating to our eyes. The whole thing about granulating paints is they are the ones with the big particles??
really? do u have an info source? i'm so interested! people are telling me it's one pigment called pthalomar or something... someone said it in the comments
