@@PaintinHiding oh seeing the video, quin cherry red is the paint you are swatching! :D I though it would be quin red 8D nevermind, all of them are so pretty
Ahhhhh Vee, thank you for this comparison. Roman Szmal Cherry quinacridone was the first ever PR209 I ever used. That colour is so soft and pretty but the texture frustrated me so much; it was as you described and also felt gummy to me. I now use Sennelier's and really love it. I still have to finish the RS cherry quin one but only if mixing it PY150 for some really pretty quin gold hues.
Oh I’m glad I went with the Sennelier for my Quin red rather than the RS. I like it much better when I look at them next to each other. Thanks for the comparison!
Thank you! Definitely that's my experience with PR209 from Roman Szmal ;). I prefer their Pyrrol Scarlet and Scarlet Red for warm red. My favorite PR209 is M Graham's Quinacridone Red but don't like the stickiness of the brand so I am trying out Maimeri Blu's Quin Red now and going to see how PR207 Schmincke Quin Red Light compares.
i have PR207 from rembrandt and it's definitely a different feel but i honestly dont mind it as it would take the same spot inn my palette as a warm red. ooooohhh ur trying Maimeri's PR209? how is it so far? their PB15:4 bubbles so much on me.
I did buy specifically Pr 209 Quin Red with MGraham. It’s a pretty red and DAVinci has a 209 Quin red. My DS Quin Red is a PV19. But pretty also. I believe the MGraham is nice and a bit cooler than the DAVinci but it could be my swatches. I would say the color is very similar but MGraham seemed to go down on the paper with a bit more pigmentation.
I also love this color. I have the version of Winsor and Newton and Holbein, both lovelly. Schmincke makes Quinacridone red light with PR207, a bit lighter than the others. But my favorite is Sennelier's, no doubt. Thank you for your videos.
Definitely recommend PR209 but invest in a small tube which you can use to make custom colours should you wish especially with PY150 for golden oranges or Daniel Smith py139 a wide range of orange hues that resemble Rembrandt's Benzimidazole orange PO72 to vermillion hue (that deep red orange) It works well will dioxazine purple to get an attractive red purple and neutralises well with pthalo turquoise/pthalo aqua green. Plays well with warm earth tones too. I used Sennelier PR209 for my tests and even tried it with Sennelier orange PO73 and it gave me soft orange red hues that reminded me of pink grapefruit. All in all, whichever brand you choose, that PR209 will not sit idle in your palette. 💕
Thanks for the comparison. I have DS quin coral based on your videos and I go between that and Sennelier’s French vermillion as my warm red. I’ve never been a fan of the usual scarlet so I’m glad to have these 2 lovely options.
Lovely color! Looks quite consistent too. I have the Mijello but I avoided using it for years because it remained very sticky in the pan. Now I use it without problems, I just fill the pan only halfway. The pinks are great for portraits and florals. It's a color that makes me think of my sister because her room was always painted a hibiscus color thats close to how Pr209 washes out. In my current palette it sits between pyrrole orange and quin magenta.
Totally agree with what you said at the beginning, my palette came with pr254 and I hated how opaque it was and how it didn't mix well (imo). I went and bought Daniel Smith's quin coral and my mind was blown! Definitely one of my fav colors based on how pretty it is and the beautiful mixes it makes. Great video 😊
This is one of my favorite colors. I also love using it for painting underwater coral scenes, or watering it down and using it as a pink. Mixed with a small touch of Dioxazine Violet, then some white it makes a perfect almost dusty amaranth color. I currently have just the Daniel Smith version, but I hope to try the Sennelier version next. It's really a versatile and useful color to stumble upon. I remember swatching the dot card, seeing this and then my next blick order had that in the cart xD
This is one of my favorite colors. I also have the same pigment in Turner Watercolors (Quin Red is the color name). It looks like Daniel Smith in the warmness of the masstone, but does not appear to have as much pigment, which is not surprising for the price difference. Interesting comparison. Thanks!
i have it in winsor newton and love it. looks most similar to the ds as least through the screen. i love my sennelier paints but it's a little frustrating how so many of its colors are far from matching my other brands.
I just bought the DV (Da Vinci) one and I’m excited to use it. Just debating if I can get away with it being the only red on my palette. I don’t use red that often and don’t think I need a warm and a cool and/or a rose. I currently have DS Pyrrol Scarlet (which I do really like), WN Permanent Rose (I rarely use), and DV Perylene Maroon (hate it! Going to remove it but do think I’ll use it to make a diy black with Phthalo green). So thinking of dropping all of it and just using PR209. I tested it with blue and yellow and seemed like it successfully makes decent oranges AND purples.
This is my go-to bright red, it’s got a nice balance of transparent brightness in thin washes and great mass tone n heavy layers, and since I became obsessed with handmade watercolors I noticed not a lot of paint makers will offer coral red. I finally found one and am so happy to have my personal favorite red in my handmade palette too! For professional brands I use Daniel Smith though it’s available easily in my area so that’s what I went with
I don't remember if I commented before. I have versions from Holbein, Roman Szmal and M. Graham. I have settled on the M. Graham version because I work from tubes and it was easier to get... I think the milky look when wet is a characteristic of the pigment, and it is present in all versions I own. This milkiness goes away once it dries.
wow, i guess it's difficult for us to compare since we both only have roman szmal's that's the same between the two of us. i agree that the milkiness goes away once it dries for the RS. the other PR209 brands that are shown here don't have that same milkiness so now i'm wondering if the three brands that you have maybe have used the same binder, who knows. but thank you for your inputt!
I have the M Graham PR 209 that they call Quin Red, I think it's closest to Sennelier but I'll be getting a sample of DS soon so I'll be able to tell better.
I love PR 209! But when I first bought it, I hated it... as well as Azo Green, which I bought at the same time. These are mixing colors that need to grow on you. PR 209 is so unusual that it has both cool and warm undertones. It is the best red for a CYM palette in my opinion. Although, it is rather low in tinting strength, and strangely the M. Graham is rather weak. I have the M Graham, DaVinci, and Mission Gold. I actually like DaVinci the best; it's the most pigmented and totally smooth. M. Graham and Mjello have some texture to them. The Sennelier looks quite different, that's fascinating! I also have the PR 207 from Qor but it's quite warm and I'm not super fond of it. Hey you have a kolinsky brush now, you must have gotten more from Rosemary? (Sorry, I have not been able to keep up on your videos lately.)
hey jenn! miss you! hope you've been well~ no worries for not keeping up. i have lots of content i've fallen behind on as well. and yes, i've got several more brushes from rosemary. probably need to do an updated brush collection some time. not any time soon though. i've been laying low on brush videos because they take a lot of work but hardly anyone watches them.
Also, would you ever consider making a list of pigment numbers and what companies like to call them? Or do you know a good reference for it that doesn't use just the scientific names for them? That also lists the names that art suppliers give them?
Thank you so much for this video! I tried the RS, it's nice but feels too weak for what I want to use it for. It does have a chalky or semi-opaque character to it. I'd like to try the sennelier, the PWC, or the DS sometime. I want to find out if I'd prefer this or a pyrrol.
sennelier and DS are great options. don't get the PWC one because... well... i explained it in the vid i posted in june of this year. check it out ua-cam.com/video/4nKcDkwhpgg/v-deo.html

It says it’s transparent. I got DS Perylene Red today too…while I had ordered the P Maroon, I think I’ll keep this one. (PR178)

Whenever I see it swatched on UA-cam it looks red, but mine is not. Is the salmon color how it actually looks, or did I get a weird pan?🤔
yeah, RS does things to their colours that make it a bit diff to everyone else. i call it milk, @awatercolourist said maybe the brighteners RS uses. we'll never know. my RS PR209 is a warm red with a slight pink undertone. i can't quite say if it's salmon because i do feel like some people say salmon is pink some say salmon is orange. lol
These pigment colors drive me crazy. I stocked up on pinks for a floral painting class and am kind of sad that DS Quin Red if PV19. I can't figure out how they can make so many colors from PV19! The permanent rose PV19 is my favorite color because it's so high chroma and lightfast, but now I'm going to need some PV209. BTW, Holbein uses PV209 for their brilliant pink, along with PW6, and it's a lovely light pink cheater color.
