SPOILERS for the last season so only read if you’ve watched it all. . . . . . . . . That was all to get Locke into a position from which the MiB could steal his identity and use his influence.

For kicks, I looked up the comic book shown at 9:07. It is a real comic - Mystery Tales no. 40 from 1956. Lostpedia actually has an entry about it: lostpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Mystery_Tales_No._40 (If you've seen The Leftovers, the idea of a real magazine/comic book having stories/articles that are relevant to the fictional story repeats again with that issue of National Geographic that keeps popping up.)
It makes you wonder if the explosion of the Swan Hatch at the end of Season 2 was actually the cause of the freighter malfunctioning. It would be a sweet irony/fate that the Hatch keeps destroying vessels when they draw close to the island in order to manipulate the lives of the people on board. While Michael hadn't even left the island yet, there's this timey-wimey thing happening at the border between Island time and Real time, so perhaps the Hatch emitting its electromagnetism in Season 2 doesn't affect anything outside its sphere until late in Season 3 since they've established that the island folk seem to experience the future first.
