Money is the binding higher order synergy relation between the economy's information signals / constraints and matter-energy self-organization processes. This synergy relation itself can be relatively functional or not which to speak metaphorically is like the synergy of of organism's parts or the oil of a "well-oiled machine". Money has a maturation process that precisely coincides with the icon, index, symbol process. Even fiat-commodity detachment is analogous to the virtualization or decoupling of symbols from underlying indices (a kind of domestication) and their reorientation and integration toward the other symbols.
When seen dynamically there is a delay or oscillation (a hysteresis?) between the control (inhibition/excitation) and the matter-energy flow. This is similar to what we find in predator-prey dynamics though perhaps between orders of energy that are much more varied in their order of magnitude. That is wolves and rabbits are perhaps similar in the magnitude of their biomass (speculating here). Now there is an analogy to the the brain where we have a delay dance between the metabolic flow and the neuronal activation. In the developmental process of representations from icon to index to symbols (a recurring triad), money, action potentials and most of human terms are symbolic in that they are a presence or material embodiment representing a absence. For example an action potential is a energy impulse of potential difference or an energetically embodied dynamic of difference (absence). This is similar to the concept of the numeral representing 0 (zero) in math. This applies to money and symbolic language as well. This is something that Terrence Deacon speaks on in the context of the emergence of mind in his book Incomplete Nature and elsewhere (though I am elaborating and applying/extending a bit here).
Money is something I am willingly to acquire in the here and now in exchange for my time & effort to acquire something or service in the present or future that would not require additional time & effort within my expertise or not.
Money is not the most important tool in the world, language is. Asking what is money reveals the inadequacy of a linear language to answer this multidimensional question.

To me money is the physical certificate of economical power in a certain region or society. It can't buy you health, since economy doesn't produce human health, it only create and sell the efforts and knowledge to gain that health. Effort mean sometime it works sometimes it doesn't. As an instrument of human economy, money's power is limited to what is commercially available.

My take is that real money is an abstraction of the fair exchange of standardised weights and measures of value.
